The Philippines is one of the most


disaster-prone countries in the
world. Located along the Pacific
Ocean’s “Ring of Fire” and having
5 major fault lines, it is vulnerable to
disasters such as earthquakes.

The country is no stranger to


earthquakes, but one of the most
memorable to hit it is the quake
that hit the island of Luzon in 1990.
That powerful quake resulted in a
number of collapsed buildings and
thousands of lives lost.

At around 4 pm on July 16, 1990, a


Brief Overview about the Disaster magnitude-7.8 earthquake hit
An earthquake of 7.8 magnitude on the Richter Northern and Central Luzon. Its
Scale, (epicenter at 15.71 N and 121.15 E) jolted the epicenter was recorded in Nueva
Island of Luzon on July 16, 1990 at 4:26 pm, affecting Ecija, and the shaking lasted for
the whole of northern and central Luzon (Regions I, about a minute.
II, III, and Cordillera Autonomous Region) and part of
southern Luzon, including Metro Manila. There were
18,337 barangays (villages) in 13 cities and 231
municipalities in 23 provinces that were severely
affected. The City of Baguio in the Mountain
Province of Northern Luzon was most affected and
devastated.
