FIXED EXPRESSIONS

4.1 Overview

This chapter identifies one hundred and three fixed expressions


from the comic stories selected for the study. The chapter categories
these expressions based on the number of words present in them. It
names them as one worded, two worded, three worded, four worded and
five worded fixed expressions. The chapter also presents the original
contexts in which these expressions figure and their usage in created
contexts. The chapter in its second section presents exercises and
activities designed for teaching these fixed expressions. The chapter
finally ends with a key.

4.2 One worded Fixed expressions


1) Cool

Context: Cool! I’ll start preparations immediately.

Usage: Cool! Don’t get tensed my child.

2) Well

C: Well, the secretary’s son had an accident while swimming.

U: Well, I’d better be going now.

3) Great

C: Great! Then we’re set!

U: Great! You have accomplished your goal.

4) Shoo

C: Shoo! Scat, you greedy bird.

U: Shoo! You nasty dog, get away.

C: Whatever! Just stay clear of our orbit!

U: Whatever. Don’t give me inane excuses here after.

6) Please

C: Please make yourself at home here.

U: Please, will you keep quiet.

U: Here we are. We found our way to the library.

d) Out of the world

C: Aunty, your dosas and coffee are really out of the world.

U: The boy danced so well that his dance seemed out of the world.

e) What does it mean?

C: A strange sight indeed. What does it mean?

chicks. What does it mean brother?
