My home town

1. I was born in London but my family moved to Liverpool when I was two, so that's
really my home town. It's a large, industrial city on the north-west coast of England, with a
population of over half a million people.

2. Liverpool's a lovely city but it's quite dirty and polluted and there are a lot of poor
areas. It has some beautiful parks, some modern shopping centres and two cathedrals. There
isn't a beach and in the summer people go to Blackpool for their holidays. There's a lot of
nightlife especially on Fridays and Saturdays, with live music in a lot of pubs.

3. The weather here isn't wonderful. The winter's quite long and it rains a lot.
Sometimes we have good weather in the summer but not always.
4. Liverpool is famous for the Beatles. Every year a lot of tourists come to visit the
Beatles Museum and to see the nightclub where they first played. The city's also famous for its
football teams. Every Saturday, thousands of people go to Anfield to see Liverpool FC and
Goodison Park to see Everton.

5. But I think the best thing about Liverpool is the people. Liverpudlians have a very
special sense of humour. Although a lot of people in Liverpool are unemployed, they're still
very positive. They're friendlier than people in other parts of England.

6. Liverpool isn't the most beautiful city in the world, but I love living here. I wouldn't
like to live anywhere else.

1. Read the description.. Is it T (true) or F (false)?

1 The writer's home town is London.
2 Liverpool isn't a holiday town.
3 It often rains in Liverpool.
4 There's only one famous football team in Liverpool.
5 Liverpudlians are quite unfriendly.
6 The writer would like to move back to London.

2. Match the questions and paragraphs (1 to 6).

a Do you like living there?
b What's it famous for?
c What's it like?
d What's the best thing about it?
e What's the weather like?
f Where's your home town? How big is it?

Do you believe in ghosts? Perhaps you will when you read about the most haunted house
in England!
Borley House, in a small village in the south-east of England, was built in 1863. Soon after
the first owners moved in, strange things began to happen. In the middle of the night,
footsteps and voices were heard and an organ played somewhere in the house. The owner's
daughter woke up one night and saw an old man in a tall hat standing near her bed.
Later owners of the house had other frightening experiences. A headless man was seen in the
garden, and a coach and horses were heard arriving in the middle of the night. Locked doors
were found unlocked the next day. Messages were found written on the walls. One said,
'Marianne, help!' The name of the owner's wife at the time was Marianne.
In 1937 an advertisement was put in The Times by a famous ghost hunter asking for
volunteers to spend nights in the house. Forty people were chosen and they all reported
strange happenings and strange noises.
In 1939 the house was destroyed by fire. During the fire a young girl was seen at one of the
windows.
Although the house isn't there now. People who visit the site of the house talk about feeling
cold and strange. People say that even at midday there aren't any birds singing near Borley

1. Read the text and number paragraphs A-E in the correct order.
The teenager who changed world history
A. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was the direct cause of the First World War, which

started the same year, which resulted in the deaths of nine million soldiers. The war
ended in 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles, which was very unfavourable to Germany.
This, in turn, resulted in Germany going to war again in 1939, a war in which
approximately 60,000,000 people around the world lost their lives.
B. For example, do you know who Gavrilo Princip was? Probably not. He was a Serb,

born in Bosnia in 1894 and was one of nine children, six of whom died when they were
very young. Gavrilo's health was also very bad and he suffered from tuberculosis. He
studied in Belgrade where he spent most of his time with nationalists who wanted a
union between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia. He died when he was just 24 years old.
C. The Second World War ended with the Treaty of Yalta in 1945 which led to the division

of Eastern Europe, which eventually led to the conflict in Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
Possibly no other person has had so much impact on world history over the last century
than the sickly teenager, Gavrilo Princip.
D. History tells us about famous leaders, Kings and Queens, but what about the great
changes which have been caused by one small act carried out by a relatively
unknown person?
E. So why is he so important? Well, Gavrilo Princip is the boy who, at the age of 19,

assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914. Franz Ferdinand was

going to be the next Austro-Hungarian emperor and the nationalists wanted their
country to be independent from the empire. After shooting and killing the Archduke
in his car, Gavrilo was captured by the police and sentenced to 20 years
imprisonment. But he died in prison of tuberculosis in 1918.

JANUARY 8th – the most dangerous day of the year!
Be careful on January 8th - it's officially the most dangerous day of the year. The insurance
company Hyperion has analyzed accident statistics and has found that there are more
insurance claims for accidents on January 8th than on any other day.
Accidents are certainly more likely to occur at particular times of year. One general rule is
that more accidents happen in winter months, because risk increases in bad weather. In
2004 and 2006 Hyperion found that the worst day was January 8th, with 298 motoring
accidents reported to them. March 3rd was statistically the safest day, with only 89 reports.
Six of the ten worst days for motoring were in January.
It's obvious that icy and snowy conditions are dangerous, but some other statistics are
more puzzling. A British Medical Journal report in 2001, for example, found that hospital
admissions were always higher than usual on Friday 13th.
But it is not only when Friday falls on the 13th that it is a dangerous day. Four of the top
ten worst days for accidents last year were Fridays - perhaps because everyone is rushing
home for the weekend - while Thursdays are the safest day of the week.
At what time of day is an accident most likely to occur? Analysis by the Health and Safety
Authority found that people are most likely to have an accident at 11.00a.m., whereas the
safest time of day is between 4.00 and 5.00 a.m. - probably because most people are in
bed!
Finally, good news for Harry Potter fans. Doctors at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford
noted that fewer children are admitted to the emergency ward on the weekends when
Harry Potter books are released. Casualties fell by over 50% when the last two books went
on sale. So if you want to be really safe, you should read a Harry Potter book in bed, at
around 5.00 on a Thursday morning, in summer ...

1. Read the article again and match the sentence halves.

1 In 2005, March 3rd
2 When there's a new Harry Potter book

You are going to read a magazine article about an alternative type of school. Choose the
most suitable heading from the list A-H for each part of the article. There is one extra
heading which you do not need to use. There is an example at the beginning (0).

A Advantages and disadvantages

B A calming influence
C Different from the rest
D Helping the slower students
E Creating the right environment
F A growing success
G Looking on the positive side
H Not what you would expect

The Little school of Calm

0H
From the outside the Maharishi School in Lancashire looks extremely normal. Walk inside
and you find rows of desks and children in uniform, just as you would do in many other
schools. After a short while, however, you become aware of the wonderfully calm
atmosphere and the extraordinary lack of noise in the building. Talk to the teachers and
you learn that the school has no major discipline problems, there is no bullying and
children are rarely absent So what is the secret?
1
Transcendental meditation and breathing exercises are an important part of the timetable at
the Maharishi School. Pupils are taught how to relax mentally by closing their eyes and
silently repeating over and over again a 'mantra', or Word of Wisdom, at certain times of
the day. Meditation is seen by some as an effective way of relieving stress, which
teenagers experience in the form of exam nerves, bullying and family break-ups. Its
supporters also say that it helps to overcome hyperactivity, anxiety and aggression.
2
The school was started in 1986 by a group of parents who were dissatisfied with the state
education system. The number of pupils at the school has increased since then from 14 to
100, with ages ranging from four to 16. Academic achievements are impressive and for the
past five years pupils at the school have obtained the highest average GCSE exam marks
for the whole of Lancashire. It's not surprising then, that more and more parents are
sending their children to be taught there.
3
Many people in the local community, however, are still unaware of the school's existence.
Others view the school with suspicion and associate it with mystic cults or the hippy
movement of the sixties. 'Local people don't really understand what goes on here,' explains
one teacher. 'They just see us as a little strange and prefer to keep their distance.'
4
Teachers from other schools, however, are beginning to take an interest in the methods of
the school. 'After the silence of meditation the children are very aware, awake and
receptive,' explains head teacher, David Yates.
'This is very beneficial for the teacher and means we have the best conditions for learning
to take place. In some other schools teachers have difficulty just getting the students to
listen. That is not a problem here.'
5
If there is a child who is creating a problem, the school has a very thorough method of
dealing with it. A four-page form has to be filled out by the teacher, but the first three
pages of the form contain nothing but the child's good points. In this way the problem does
not become the main focus of attention; parents and teachers are encouraged to consider
the child's successes and achievements before they look at the last page.
6
But what do the children who study there think of the school's approach? 'Meditation
really helps me with my work, says 15-year-old Ruth. 'It makes me relaxed and I don't get
nervous during exams. It's a shame it's such a small school, though. I can't study music
because there aren't enough pupils, and when we read plays by Shakespeare we all have to
read three or four parts each. But I love it here, and I know I'll miss the peace and quiet
when I have to leave.'
Text 2
THE WORLD is divided into the 'haves' and the 'have nots': those who have had their names
used in popular songs and the rest. The 'haves' include anyone named Eleanor, Carol,
Bernadette, Maria, Frankie or Johnnie. Girls called Sue or Suzie are especially fortunate, what
with 'Wake up Little Suzie' and so on. The 'have-nots', a large and unhappy group, include
people named Graham, Bruce, Jacqueline and a great many others. Anyone with a name like
these is likely to go through life without ever hearing their name in a song on the radio or
anywhere else.
But help is at hand. Serge Romano has started a business called 'Songs for You' in Melbourne,
Australia Anyone can have a song written, recorded, preserved and presented to fit their
specifications.
Serge got the idea for 'Songs for You' about a year ago when he and his wife Cathy were at a
wedding. 'The groom had got a song done for his bride. The reaction from her and the
bridesmaids and other guests was fantastic. A little while later I was discussing it with
friends, and it struck me that this could really take off.'
Aiming at the wedding and engagement market, the Romanes advertise on cards in florists
and photographers' studios, but they will also take requests for songs for birthdays, Christmas
and anniversaries. The minimum fee is $300. For this, clients get a recorded version of their
song on cassette (a CD is extra), plus a framed copy of the lyrics.
The creative process begins with a client filling out a questionnaire: About your song. This
seeks details of the special occasion, relationship with the person to be immortalised in song,
how they met, habits and most memorable moments. The musical , style can be tailored to
suit the client. For lovers, something romantic; for a younger listener a heavymetal feel might
be more appropriate.
Each client gets a different song, though Serge admits that they may repeat a line from time
to time. They try to avoid this as there is always the danger that two clients may meet and
compare songs, but most songs are so personal, they couldn'1 be about anyone else. They
might include nicknames or references to some special habit.
Most of Serge's customers are very satisfied with their songs. 'Yesterday I met a girl who'd
had a song done for her for Christmas. She played it in the bank where she works. She was
nearly crying, explaining to me how much it meant to her. She knows the words by heart says
Serge. 'To anyone else1, he suggests, 'it might seem just like any other song, but Mary
certainly doesn't think so.'
Are there any situations that Serge and his songwriters couldn't deal with? For example a
woman about to split up with a man who wants to leave him a song to remember her by?
Could Serge and his team come up with something appropriate 'Sure. We could do that.
Though it's not a situation we've ever been presented with. Thank goodness!'

1. Choose the correct alternative to answer the following questions.

1 Does the word 'these' refer to
A names like Maria, Frankie or Johnnie?
B names like Graham, Bruce or Jacqueline?
C names like Eleanor, Carol or Bernadette?
D names like Sue or Suzie?
2 Does the word 'her' refer to
A Serge's wife Cathy?
B the groom?
C Serge?
D the bride?
3 Does the word 'this' refer to
A repeating a line from time to time?
B two clients meeting?
C writing different songs for each client?
D clients comparing songs?
4 Does the word 'so' refer to the fact
A that there are situations that Serge and his songwriters couldn't deal with?
B that it meant a lot to her?
C that it seems just like any other song?
D that she knows the words by heart?
5 Does the word 'that' refer to
A leaving him with a song to remember her by?
B coming up with something appropriate?
C being presented with a situation?
D dealing with the request?

2. Use your general knowledge and the context to work out what the following words
from the above article mean.
1 Often people have ideas very suddenly. So 'struck' means
A hit sharply or forcefully.
B came immediately to the mind.
2 A song is a combination of words and music. So 'lyrics' means
A the words of a song, especially a modern
popular song. B a musical instrument.
3 Something that only friends usually know about a person is the special name they like to
be called. So 'nickname' means
A the same as surname.
B a name used informally instead of a person's real name.
4 If you listen to a song a lot you eventually
remember the words. So 'she knows the words by heart' means
A she has memorised the words.
B she feels strongly about the words.
