CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction
Extracurricular activities are those activities where students can showcase their skills and

abilities in doing physical activities. When students are engaged in these kinds of activities, they

will learn how to do time management and develop and improve their confidence, social skills,

leadership skills, and sportsmanship. However, it will always depend on each students' perspective

whether they will take extracurricular activities as factors that helped them to be a developed

person. According to Massoni (2011), extracurricular activities are totally voluntary so students

that do not want to participate in them do not have to. Students are not forced to join if they do not

want to or they do not feel themselves doing so. In conclusion, extracurricular activities have

nothing to do with a student's development if the student is not interested to participate in any of

it in his school.

In the study of Bakoban & Aljarallah (2015) mentioned that extracurricular activities help

students know and understand the importance of critical-thinking skills, time management, and

academic and intellectual competence. This explains that the school activities are not just about

showcasing abilities, talents, and skills but also, using critical thinking skills to overcome or

surpass challenges. This is where academic performance comes in. It is already given that

academic learnings are applicable when doing school activities but if it is the other way around,

there is still a need to know what could be the impact of extracurricular activities to students'

academic performance and individual development and learning.

Rationale

Students should have balance attention toward extracurricular activities and Academic

performances. Also, during the process of their learning and showcasing their intelligence and

skills, they should be developed by it. The researchers have experienced participating in different
extracurricular activities since junior high school until now. After years of experience, they have

observed that catching up in academic performances got harder especially when the school clubs

added some activities for their culminations.

This study needs to be conducted for the researchers aim to know the impact of

extracurricular activities to students' development and learning and also how they cope up with

their studies when they have to divide their time for the extracurricular ones. It would be a pleasure

for the researchers to help the students by knowing the result and formulating possible and

applicable recommendations for the problem. Moreover, it is already given that students should

balance their time for activities and academics. However, school activities are now overflowing

and it is hard for the students to choose which things should be done first. Knowing if

extracurricular activities have really developed students will be a great help to determine whether

to decrease school activities to focus on academics or not. It will be a less burden if the result will

be revealed through this study.

Scope and Limitation

The study is conducted primarily for the purpose of identifying The Impact of Extra-

curricular activities in students’ Development and Learning.

The study involved a total sample of two-hundred twenty-six students of Notre Dame

Academy Senior High School Department which is divided into six sections, three sections per

year level namely; Grade 11 Sacred Heart of Jesus, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. John Paul

II, proceed to Grade 12 St. Francisco, St. Isidore and St. Jacinta. Moreover, it was also focused on
identifying The Impact of Extra Curricular Activities to students’ Development and Learning.

The study will be conducted among 226 students which were from the Grade 11 and 12 department.

Pupils were given researcher-made questionnaire checklist by the researchers provided that the

questions listed below is the main core or the driving force of the research in which the researcher

foreseen that by these chosen respondents their research study will be expedient.

Although the research has reached its aims, there were some unavoidable limitations. First

because of the time limit, Second the students hectic schedule and overloaded works, might affeact

the correlation between students and researcher, Finally the students tiredness of paperowrks might

discourage them to be the researchers respondents. The study is limited solely for all the students

of Notre Dame Academy, Senior High students.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to know whether if the extracurricular activities can develop

students or not by gathering data through survey. It is the researchers' job to analyze the data

gathered to create recommendations. Also, the objective of this study is to be able to reveal the

truth about this problem and keep the results confidentially by the researchers. This research

project aims to lessen the burden to students and help them organize things properly. Also, this

will soon help the students know how to do time management with the aid of the hypothesis and

recommendations.

Theoretical Framework
Theoretical Background

This study is supported by the Cognitive-developmental Theory by Piaget and Kohlberg.

The cognitive-developmental theory of moral character development proposes that all children are

predisposed to engage in moral and ethical thinking, feeling, choosing, and behaving. As for the

problem which is the topic, it is about how the students coped up with the hectic schedule, how

they react, and how they will manage the time that are given to compile all the requirements and

perform the activities.

The realization of the problem is derived from the causes which are hectic schedule, going

home late from school, and poor academic performance. These causes led to the effect of having

a difficulty to catch up in academic activities. Because of that, the researchers came up with

recommendations that they think that can help the problem to be solved. These recommendations
are seminars for club officers and moderators for them to know what are those activities that are

unnecessary, evaluation of activities to know what are necessary and not so that the club officers

and moderators will be able to eliminate those activities that are not important, and 1 hour free

time for students everyday so that they can be able to comply all the requirements and do

extracurricular activities and academic ones at the same time.

Significance of the Study

This study is a significant attribute to students' individual growth and personal

development wherein it takes part in letting the students know what will be the impact of extra-

curricular activities during their learning in school. Hence, it is of great importance to the following:

Students

The result of the study is for the students to be able to know how will they weigh and

manage their time and performances in school. In addition, the statistical result of the impact of

extra-curricular activities will be one of the bases on how to make possible actions regarding to

their learning in both academic and non-academic activities.

School Club Officers and Moderators

These following people will also benefit from this study for they are the ones who handle

some of the extra-curricular activities. With this study, the club officers and moderators will be

able to know and identify how they are going to manage the time given by the school

administrators in inserting their launching and culminating activities without a conflict with the

academic ones.
Teachers

This study is concerned with the teachers' treatment along with the development of each

student. The teachers will benefit in this study for these people are part of the growth of students

in which they can be the factors that will help a student mold for the betterment.

School Administrators

School Administrators are the ones who approve the activities that will be presented by the

Club Officers and Moderators. The study is beneficial for the school administrators for it helps

them to be aware about how impactful or not the extra-curricular activities are so that they can be

able to ponder and put things in a right place and time with the cooperation of the club officers and

moderators.

Parents

Students are not just the ones who will be affected by the extra-curricular but also their

parents. Parents will also benefit in this study for the extra-curricular activities are may be one of

the reasons why a student will come home late or get stressed. It is necessary for the parents to

know how effective or ineffective the extra-curricular activities in their children's development

and learning.

Future Researchers

This study is also for the future researchers for them to already have a background and

related literature to this topic. The result of this study is helpful for the future researchers to better

understand the topic about extra-curricular.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

To begin this chapter, a work of Nottingham et al. (2015) said that most of the time

when people talk about extra-curricular, what came out from people’ s minds are that these

activities are related to the extra-curricular that we had been forced to join during our primary and
secondary school. People do have this tendency of having a thought like this that when it comes

to extracurricular activities, physical skills are involved. Also, people tend to think that they have

been forced to do these things during their primary and secondary schools. Extracurricular

activities are factors that can affect the student's development and learning. However, this is not

yet proven so there is a need to understand more of this topic and discuss about the different

literatures about extracurricular activities.

A study of Arnold et al. (2016) describes Extra-curricular activity as an activity that

has nothing to do with academic activity. This means that it doesn't always require much academic

thinking but rather in a student's skills towards physical activities. Moreover, though these

activities are not part of the regular schedule of classes in school, this is still needed to be part of

every student's life.

Nesan D., mentioned in the article of Co-curricular activities in school (2009) that a

student can perform better in the internal and external skills such are self-acceptance, confidence,

sexual orientation, career goals and many others with the aid of extracurricular activities.

Extracurricular activities are not just simply talking about skills but these also give benefits to

students who are engaging these activities. These are just one of the definitions and benefits of

extracurricular activities and these were able to defend their stand.

As a continuation, Arnold et al. (2016) further explained that it is part of developmental

modules which can make the students think from a rather plain point of view of themselves and

the world around them. This statement pictures out a student who engages in extracurricular

activities. A student will not only enhance his physical skills but also improve their thinking skills

and relationship with others. Also, a student can also go out in his comfort zone and think further
than his plain point of view before. However, According to Mehus (1932) low academic

performance is because of factors including extracurricular activities. This states that

extracurricular activities are one of the factors that may drag the student from having interest in

academic performance. This study of Mehus is partly supported by Baker (2008) who continues

to point some activities enhance academic achievement while others hinder it. There is still a need

to identify what are those circumstances that extracurricular activities can hinder in students'

learning and development.

Alongside with the other literatures in favor with the extracurricular activities as

being beneficial, Jackson (2017) stated that a student’ s social life is as important as his academic

life and it is for his development. This statement of Jackson shows an image of a developed student.

Academic performance is important to shape the student to be more competitive and open to others,

so as extracurricular activities. Both extracurricular and academic activities are equal and

beneficial to students.

According to Singh et al. (2012), activities that need physical abilities are generally

promoted for their positive effect on children's physical health; regular participation in physical

activity in childhood is associated with a decreased cardiovascular risk in youth and adulthood.

This says that extracurricular activities will not only help students in development and learning

but also in maintaining good health. In addition, a study of Brown (n.d.) seconded the motion by

stating that young people who participate also have been found to be less likely to use substances

such as drugs and alcohol, less likely to drop out of school, misbehave at school, and commit

delinquent acts. Brown believes that when a student is engaged in extracurricular activities, he will

be less to go astray and put his attention to his betterment. Having extracurricular activities in
every students life will have to offer time and money but these are for students' development and

learning.

Some children in early and middle adolescence tend to question about their worthy and

begin to doubt about their confidence. In relation to this, Wilson & Nikki L. (2009) revealed that

extracurricular activities may affect student's connectedness to his or her school, as if they cannot

participate, they may feel left out or isolated. This statement is very relatable to students who feel

this way when they cannot participate in particular extracurricular activities. When a student

cannot be able to participate, possible outcomes such as feeling outdated may cause lack of interest

in going to school. A student will feel confident and active with the aid of extracurricular activities.

In conclusion, Arnold et al. (2016) ended their study with a conclusion that students’

level of involvement in the extra-curricular activities depends to their desire and willingness of

themselves to participate. Being involved in extracurricular activities is not really necessary. It

depends on the student whether he/she will participate or not.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The data research will used quantitative approach. The study employed a non-experimental

research design. The design was meant to gauge whether the students’ extra-curricular activities

can help them develop and learn. The data are gathered through a survey where the researchers

chose all of the Senior High School students in Notre Dame Academy. This study is quantitative
in nature wherein numbers are being used to crunch data and the researchers used the availability

sampling method.

Research Environment

The study was conducted in Notre Dame Academy of San Fernando, Cebu Inc. which is

located in Panadtaran, San Fernando, Cebu. This campus is mainly for Senior High School students

and it is the second establishment of the said school. The location is not far away from the highway,

perhaps it only takes a few meters to reach. The school has this spacious area enough to

accommodate the students' population wherein it has lots of classrooms, facilities, laboratories and

comfort room. All of the said facilities is enough to cater every students needs including a total of

four rooms to be a highly functional Audio Visual Room (AVR) and is fully air conditioned.

Research Respondents

The respondents of this study are the Senior High students in Notre Dame Academy of San

Fernando, Cebu Inc. Specifically all the students of the said school wherein the research takes

place. The choosing of the respondents of this survey is through gathering all the number of

students per section and the computation of the total data gathered by the researchers. The total

number of students in the Senior High Campus is two hundred twenty-six (226) and the researchers

provided a researcher-made questionnaire checklist for the respondents to answer.

Research Instrument

To provide an accurate detailed data the researchers made a “ researcher-made

questionnaire checklist” to be given to the chosen respondents. The draft of the questionnaire was

drawn at based on the researchers’ inquisitive mind that they manage to formulate questions in a
cogent fashion. In order for the researcher to respect someone’s privacy, the researchers did not

force the student to put the respondents name to protect their anonymity. In addition, the instrument

was validated by our own Practical Research II Teacher before it is used on to the study.

Research Procedure

The researchers have followed certain procedures in the conduct of this study

1. The researchers have chosen a topic which is The Impact of Extracurricular Activities to

students’ Development Learning.

2. The researchers aim to know how effective the extracurricular activities are in shaping and

developing a student.

3. The impact of The Extracurricular Activities serves as the independent variable while the

Students’ Development and Learning is the dependent variable.

4. The researchers selected the school of Notre Dame Academy of San Fernando, Cebu Inc.

in Senior High Campus which is located at the at Panadtaran, San Fernando, Cebu and their target

subjects were the students who is enrolled in the said school.

5. The researchers made a letter to ask permission to the higher authority of the school.

6. Then the researchers also asked permission to the respondents to participate in their study

and proceed to giving questionnaire which the researchers prepared for the survey when the

respondents agreed to answer their survey.

7. Researchers also secured the information gathered and kept it confidential.

8. However, the researchers encountered changes of the method that was supposed to be used.

They used availability sampling instead of targeting all of the students because during the survey,

many of the respondents didn’ t accept the questionnaires because of hectic schedule. So the

researchers chose those respondents who were available that time.

Through the survey conducted by the researchers, they are now prepared to analyze and interpret

the data gathered and to excel their knowledge through the process of exploring and discovering.

CHAPTER 4

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

This chapter will bring in the presentation of the findings and analysis derived from the

survey. The data was gathered in Notre Dame Academy of San Fernando, Cebu Inc. Campus 2

specifically in both Grade 11 and 12 departments. This chapter solely focuses on presenting the

gathered data in an accurate and meaningful way to facilitate the discussion which will be

presented in Chapter 5.

Dispersion and Background of the Respondents

The survey has targeted all students from Notre Dame Academy of San Fernando, Cebu

Inc. However, only 59 out of 229 target number of respondents responded to the invitation

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATION

Purpose of the study

The purpose of the study is to determine The Impact of Extra-curricular activities in

students’ Development and Learning. The study was accomplished with the Senior High Students

of Notre Dame Academy of San Fernando, Cebu, Inc. Panadtaran Campus.

Conclusions

The result of the investigation indicate that The Impact of Extra-curricular activities in

students’ Development and Learning is huge. The result of the researcher-made questionnaire
checklist clearly allows researchers to reject null hypothesis for numbers don’ t lie and it is shown

in the graph in the Chapter 4. The result of this study is consistent with the review of literature for

all of the things covered in this study is accurately parallel to one another. The most widely used

analysis was correlation survey. The study allows moderators to know what activities should they

throw to students for them to be hooked to that certain extra-curricular activities that student may

find it interesting and can open their Logical, Inquisitive, and Creative way of thinking. The survey

shows that a lot of students are more than willing to participate in the said activities and because

of the arising competence in each section. Therefore this may indicate that competence between

students in senior high school might allow a greater number of students to participate in

extracurricular activities.
