Paper Autoestcom 2007 JSLC.

This document discusses the development of indicators for maintenance of plants that produce Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI). It describes the main systems used to produce HBI and form it into briquets using hot briquet machines (HBM). Due to a lack of expertise operating and maintaining the HBM when production started, the plant was unable to meet quality standards demanded by customers. The document proposes establishing a methodology to achieve stable operational regimes and quality according to client requirements. It discusses developing skills and techniques for reliable HBM production. Statistical analysis techniques and measurement of remedial actions were used to positively impact HBM operation and maintenance.

ABSTRACT

The iron is reduced for exportation in form of briquets also called HBI, Hot Briquetted
Iron, which is produced by companies as much at regional level as international similars
to plant MATESI located in the industrial sector ¨Punta de Cuchillo¨ of Puerto Ordaz
Bolivar State, Venezuela. The main systems for the generation of the HBI are the
reduction subsystem where the chemical characteristics of the material occur and the one
of final formation of the product in briquets machines in hot HBM where the physical
characteristics of the briquet occur definitive. Due to the little expertise as far as the
operation and maintenance of the briquet machines in MATESI during the starting of its
operations, it is not managed to fulfill the standards of physical quality demanded by the
market at world-wide level for its commercialization and acceptance on the part of
companies that use like raw material the HBI, reason why it considers in this article, the
establishment of a methodology of work that allows to reach the stable regimes operative
and of quality according to the present requirements of the clients.
Like main task and during the development of this project, the necessity was had to know
and to develop to abilities and techniques to put to produce and to guarantee the
availability of the briquet machines. It is task is not easy when experience in these
equipment is not had and the necessity of a plant starting pushes to obtain results in a
very short time. Thanks to this, once proven that the applied model to leave ahead in this
situation generated results positive, could be taken as pattern to generate a philosophy of
improves continuous structured in other areas of work. In spite of being little information
referring to the maintenance and operation, this one was used in all its extension to give
beginning to the production activities and although the starting of the HBM was not
adapted not to have qualified a system of integral maintenance could be generated the
actions to obtain diminutions of up to $185,000 losses of production. In order to obtain a
quality briquet with the required physical parameters, operative variable values already
defined seted out taking into account the results from a experience done by the processes
equipment of the plant in which the operative conditions of the machines were varied to
have a positive answer in the quality of the briquet, 82 specifically by means of the test of
Drop Test. These data were modeled statistically through the simulation by Monte Carlo
Simulation . This task is made of a structured way and systematic to the height of plants
of world-wide class, in where the instrumentation of techniques of statistical analysis of
data and measurement of the evaluation of the remedial actions show to the positive
effects in the operation and maintenance of the Briquets machines.
