4.1 Boring
Bore holes of 150mm size were drilled by shell and auger method driven by power
operated winch as per IS: 1892-1979. Casings were used as per requirement to retain
the bore holes in position. The Bore holes were advanced up to 20.0m depth below
existing ground surface and demobilized on satisfactory completion of the entire field
work.
4.3 The undisturbed soil samples were collected in good quality thin walled seamless
tubes, of min. dia of 100mm and length of 450 mm with area ratio less than 10%. The
UDS tubes are gently pushed in soil using hydraulic push rig/gently hammering
action. After retrieval of UDS tube from the borehole, ends of the tube with sample
were sealed with freshly molten wax of minimum 20 mm thick, properly labeled,
marked an arrow showing upward direction and dispatched to laboratory for testing.
At site, sample tubes were covered with wet gunny bags. When the UDS tubes were
not penetrated into the subsoil strata, it was clearly mentioned on the bore log sheet.
4.4 Disturbed soil samples were also collected from the bore holes at suitable
depths/intervals to supplement the boring records. These samples were collected in
polythene bags of suitable size. These samples were properly sealed, labeled, recorded
& carefully transported to the laboratory for testing.
4.5 Density and natural moisture contents of soil samples from the boreholes at different
depths were measured in the laboratory and the values are indicated in laboratory test
results in Bore Log table.
4.6 Recording of Water Table
Water table met with in the boreholes at the time of drilling was recorded
continuously until the same got stabilized. The details are given in the respective bore
logs and also in Table
Summary of bore hole:
The following laboratory tests were conducted on selected soil samples recovered
from borehole location: -
(p) Bulk/Dry density and Natural moisture content
(q) Sieve analysis
(r) Hydrometer analysis
(s) Liquid limit & Plastic limits
(t) Classification of Soil
(u) Specific gravity
(v) Direct shear test
(i) Chemical analysis of ground water collected from borehole for sulphate &
chloride content.
All the above laboratory tests were carried out as per relevant Indian Standards. All
the soil samples were identified and classified as per IS: 1498-1970.
6.0 SEISMICITY
As per the seismic zoning map of India, Site ID …. falls in sever intensity
zone (Zone IV). However, there were no major earthquakes occurred in ……city till
date.
The classification of subsoil strata met with at this site based on field and laboratory
test results can be summarized as under:
From 7.50m to 20.45m depths consists of grayish fine sand (SP-SM) having SPT field
‘N’ values ranging from 32 to 62 showing dense to very dense compactness of the
strata.
The subsoil strata are medium dense to very dense up to the depth of exploration. The
detail description of subsoil strata encountered along with various laboratory test
results are presented in the respective bore logs given in soil profile is enclosed as
ANNEXURE- A (1) & (2). The subsoil profile depicting the distribution of the
various subsoil strata along with observed ‘N’ values with depth together with other
test results are given in soil profile is enclosed as ANNEXURE- A (2).
The depth wise observed & corrected SPT values of subsoil strata, Grain size curves,
direct shear and field log sheet are enclosed as ANNEXURE- B (1) to (3).
Water table is observed at a depths varying from ____m to ____m and with the
seasonal variation the same is expected to go up and accordingly for design purpose
water table should be considered at the foundation level.
The range of variation of geotechnical properties for each layer required for analysis
of Tower foundations was estimated by various laboratory and field tests with
reasonable accuracy. Based on the laboratory test data and field test data, Liquefaction
analysis performed for the top 20m thick saturated sandy silt, silty sand and fine sand
soil layers for design earthquake of Magnitude = 7.0 & acceleration as 0.24g indicates
that the factor of safety against liquefaction, FSL for all layers is much higher than
1.0.
The results of chemical tests are within the permissible limit as per Indian Standard
Code and are safe for construction purposes and the same are given in ANNEXURE
A (4) & (5).
* For Zone III & IV: N > 12 for water bearing strata. Otherwise 90% occurrence.
* N > 10 for dry condition.
* Length not less than 15m for Zone V with 90% occurrence.
* With linear increase of N = 10 to 25 from 5m onwards.
Bearing capacity has been evaluated in accordance with IS 6403 and IS 8009 (All
equations are given in Annexure 1) and same are given below
8.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
All loose soils/debris/human waste /chemical waste material should be removed and
the exposed foundation bearing surface should be watered and compacted properly
using rammers / rollers. The surface should then be protected from disturbances due
to construction activities so that the foundations may bear on the natural undisturbed
ground. For open foundations, we opine placement of 100 mm thick “blinding layer”
of lean concrete to facilitate placement of reinforcing steel and to protect the soils
from disturbance and also to ensure stable bed to facilitate placement of
reinforcement steel.
Considering the nature of soil, type of proposed structures, expected loads on
foundations & foundation subjected to overturning moment, suggested foundations is
500mmm diameter cast-in situ Pile foundation & Pile Capacities recommended for
design purposes are given in the following table.
9.0 CLOSURE

Annexure B
OPEN SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS:
The allowable bearing capacity of sub-soil strata for Open foundation has been
computed from shear and settlement failure considerations.
The values are computed from unconfined compressive strength UCS, using the
following equation;
qd = cu Nc Sc dc - Refer IS:6403, Clause 5.3
where
qd = Net Ultimate bearing capacity
For C - Soils
qd = Cu Nc Sc dc + D ( Nq – 1) Sq dq + 0.5 B N S d W ’
Bearing capacity factor shall be determined for for general shear failure
and ’ = tan –1(0.67 tan) for local shear failure.
For cohesion less soil with eo value less than 0.55, values are computed for General
shear failure, for eo values between 0. 55 to 0.75 the values are computed by linear
interpolation between local and general shear failure, and for e o value greater than
0.75 the values are computed for local shear failure.
For footing resting on multilayer deposit, Bowls recommends that the ultimate
bearing capacity of footing be determined using average values of cohesion, Cav and
angle of shearing resistance, av. The average values are computed over a depth H
below the base of footing,
where
H = 0.5 B tan (45 + /2)
Sf = Sc + Si
Sc = Soed
Si = pB(1-2) I /E; will be negligible
= poission’s ratio,
Soed = (hI cc /(1 + e0) ) log10 ((p’ + p0’) / p0’))
(Reference: clause 9.2.2.2 IS 8009 (Part I))
where;
hI = thickness of soil layer (m)
cc = Compression index
e0 = Initial void ratio

If clays are lightly over consolidated, then the above method may be adopted but if
the clay is heavily over consolidated, it may not be necessary to compute the
settlement.
If the soil deposits consist of several regular soil layers in the influence zone, the
settlement of each layer below the foundation shall be computed and summed to
obtain the total settlement.
The bearing capacity for cu = 5 T/m2, 7.5 T/m2, 12.5 T/m2, 15 T/m2… 30 T/m2 are
given as under and corresponding settlement are also given therein.

PILE FOUNDATION:
Pile foundation is a feasible foundation scheme that may be designed where the
loadings are heavy/medium, upper strata are loose/soft or filled up, and depth of water
table is less. The pile load bearing capacity is calculated in accordance
with IS: 2911(Part-I/Section -2) – 2010.
Qu = AP x Nc x Cp + α x c x As
Where,
AP = Cross Sectional Area of Pile Toe
Nc = Bearing Capacity factor usually Taken as 9.0
Cp = Average Undrained Cohesion at Pile Tip
α = Reduction factor = 0.5 for Bored Piles in stiff Clay
c = Average undrained cohesion along embedded length of pile
As = Surface area of pile Shaft.
Considering the nature of soil, type of proposed structures, expected heavy loads on
foundations & over turning moments, following type of foundations can be
recommended;
300
400
500
Note: It is advisable before adopting these values for design purpose, please confirm the same by conducting
initial pile load test.
