1. Why Newton’s law of gravitation is said to be universal law ? (HOTS)

2. What is strain ?

3. Define buoyant force.

4. A vibrating simple pendulum of period T is placed in a lift which is accelerating upward. What will be the
effect on the time period ? (HOTS)

5. Sound waves from a point source are propagating in all directions. What will be the ratio of amplitudes at
distances of 8 m to 25 m from the source ?

6. A physical quanity p = a3.b3/c1/2.d .The % error in measurement of a, b, c and d are 1%, 3%, 4% and 2%
respectively. What is the % error in p? (MSE Chandigarh 2009)

7. How does Newton’s second law of motion give the concept of inertial mass ?

Is greater than or less than ? Give reason.

13. A railway carriage moves over a straight track with acceleration a. A passenger in the carriage drops a
stone. What is the acceleration of the stone w.r.t. the carriage and the earth ?

14. Two masses 8 kg and 12 kg are connected at the two ends of a light inextensible string that goes over a
frictionless pulley. Find the acceleration of the masses and the tension in the string when the masses are
released.

15. A particle has displacement equations


XA = 2f + 7
XB = 3t2 + 2f + 6
Xc = 5t3 + 4t.
Which of them has uniform acceleration ? (HOTS)

16. A particle of mass 0.1 kg has an initial speed of 4 ms-1 at a point A on a rough horizontal road. The
coefficient of friction between the object and the road is 0.15. The particle moves to a point B, at a distance
of 2 m from A. What is the speed of the particle at B ? (Take g = 10 ms-2)

17. What is the effect of internal and external forces on the velocity of centre of mass.
Or
Derive expression for torque in cartesian co-ordinates from rotation of a particle in a plane.

18. A rocket is fired from the earth towards the sun. At what distance from the earth’s centre is the
gravitational force on the rocket zero ? Mass of the sun = 2 x 1030 kg, mass of the earth = 6 x 1024 kg.
Neglect the effect of other planets etc. (orbital radius = 1.5 x 1011 m.)

19. Explain displacement in S.H.M. Find the relation between them.

20. Use the formula v = √(γp)/ρ to explain why the speed of sound in air :
(a) is independent of pressure.
(b) increases with temperature.
(c) increases with humidity.

21. Glycerine flows steadily through a horizontal tube of length 1.5 m and radius 1.0 cm. If the amount of
glycerine collected per second at one end is 4.0 x 10-3 kgs-1. What is the pressure difference between the two
ends of the tube ? (Density of glycerine = 1.3 x 103 kgm-3 and viscosity of glycerine = 0-83 Pas)

22. Derive an expression for molar heat capacity.

23. A monkey is sitting on a tree. Rahim seeing the Monkey brought some fruits and gave them to the
Monkey, and ran into the house immediately. On hearing the sound produced when Rahim was running the
monkey was scared and climbed the nearby tree.
(a) What values of Rahim inspired you ?
(b) A monkey of mass 40 kg climbs on a rope which can stand a maximum tension of 600 N. In which of the
following cases will be rope will break. The monkey :
(i) climbs up with an acceleration of 6 m/s2.
(ii) climbs down with an acceleration of 4 m/2.
(iii) climbs up with a uniform speed of 5 m/s.
(iv) Falls down the rope nearly under gravity.
(Take g = 10 m/s2) (ignore the mass of the rope) (V.B.Q.)

24. (a) State and derive work, energy relationship.


(b) Prove that instantaneous power is given by

(a) Give conditions for no work.


(b) Mountain roads rarely go straight up the slope, but wind up gradually. Why ? (HOTS)

25. State and prove Pascal’s law and give its experimental proof.

Find the excess pressure :
