ABSTRACT

Life flows towards the sea bed. Most nutrients from the soil were carried

towards the sea which then absorb by seaweeds. The elements comprising a

combination of endemic herbs Chlorophyll plus the seaweeds which were popular

foods in the local folks with a ratio of 20:30:70 of the extract as normalize to

100% under controlled temperature to produce a hydroponic fertilizer which then

applied to an experimental gardening set-up using peachy plant. Results have seen

significantly after 5-days, 10-days, 15-days, and 20-days upon application of the

formulation of hydroponic fertilizer in gardening of Pechay plant.

Chapter 1

Introduction

A.Background of the Study

The researcher applies this seaweed plus chlorophyll hydroponic

fertilizer to peachy vegetable and observed significant differences in the crop

yields. In my test, we observed that the time is not constant in growing of the

plants. The researcher uses the peachy plant so that we could save more time. The

researcher used 20 grams seaweeds, 30 grams of mango leaves and other endemic

herbs, blender and a mixer. Then, the researcher collects the 20g raw seaweeds,

with 30g of mango leaves mix with other endemic leaves and cut into pieces and

blended it and mixes it with water. Let the solution be fermented for 7-days to a

certain controlled temperature. After that the solution becomes a fertilizer for

hydroponic gardening using pechay plant. The researcher does a set-up a

Hydroponic Gardening system of pechay vegetables using that fertilizer from the

output.

The researcher recommend to the future investigators who would like

to conduct this study to make a wider research about mango. Its chemical content

and how would it effect to the other plant.

2
B.Statement of the Problem

This study tries to find out if seaweeds plus mango leaves chlorophyll

extract and other endemic plants are effective hydroponic fertilizer for pechay

vegetable crop. Specifically, it will try to answer the following questions:

1.) Is this an effective fertilizer for hydroponic pechay gardening?

2.) Is the results would be the same with planting pechay in the soil?

3) Are there advantages and disadvantages to this hydroponic fertilizer for

vegetables studies?

C.Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to make a formulation of hydroponic

fertilizer using the seaweeds as main materials plus the chlorophyll extract of

mango leaves and some endemic herbs normalize to 100percent by controlled

temperature fermentation process. Specifically, it aims to:

3
1. Collect seaweeds raw materials from sea line along Surigao City vicinity.

2. Extract chlorophyll from mango leaves and other endemic herbs.

3. Formulate all required materials in a ratio 10:30:70 under controlled

temperature which is then normalize to 100percent which will be used as

hydroponic fertilizer to grow pechay vegetables.

D.Research Hypothesis

This study may able to relate to a composition of seaweed plus chlorophyll

of mango leaves and other endemic herbs as hydroponic fertilizer for pechay

vegetable for the following null hypothesis:

1. Seaweeds and mango leaves are not compatible material for hydroponic

fertilizer.

2. It cannot get result compare to commercially available fertilizer.

4
E.Significance of the Study

This study is significant due to new soilless technology. It can utilize

recycle gallons as planting space while its make a hanging garden in our backyard.

It can find various uses of seaweeds plus the chlorophyll of mango leaves and

other endemic herbs extract as organic fertilizer. As we heard the words, "organic

fertilizer", we have an idea that it is safety. It also meant that it is environmental-

friendly. It has no side effects and cannot harm people that surrounds on it. If we

are oriented in this study which is so affordable and much better alternative option

even in the limited land space.

F.Scope and Limitations

This study entitled “Caulerpa Lentillifera Seaweed plus Mango Leaves

(Chlorophyll) as Hydroponic Fertilizer in Pechay (Brassica rapa Chinensis)

Gardening”

This study is limited only in composition of Caulerpa Lentillifera Seaweed plus

Mango Leaves (Chlorophyll) as Hydroponic Fertilizer in Pechay (Brassica rapa

Chinensis) Gardening

as hydroponic fertilizer solution for pechay vegetable gardening.

H.Review Of Related Literature

Caulerpa lentillifera is a species

of bryopsidale green algae from coastal

regions in the Indo-Pacific.

This seaweed is one of the favored

species of edible Caulerpa due to its

soft and succulent texture. C.

lentillifera is farmed and eaten in the Philippines, where it is locally known under

various names including latô and arosep; in the Malaysian state of Sabah, where it

is known as latok and a popular dish among the Bajau peoples; in Okinawa, Japan,

where it is known as umi-budō , meaning "sea grapes" and in Vietnam, where it is

known as rong nho or rong nho biển, meaning "grape algae" or "seagrape algae". It

is sometimes known in English as green caviar or sea grapes (along with the

related Caulerpa racemosa). In Indonesia, and in particular Bali, it is known

as bulung. Caulerpa lentillifera are a very nutritious edible seaweed that is highly

prized in the Orient… and looks like and has a similar texture to caviar. This

seaweed is full of nutrients and antioxidants, helps with diabetes, cancer, creates

wonderful skin and hair, and prevents heart attacks, strokes, and more.

7
I.Definitions of Terms

Glucoside-is a glycoside that is driven from glucose Mangiferine-one of the most

celebrated of tropical fruits, and it is a matter of astonishment to many, that the

luscious mango, Mangifera india L.Mango-deep rooted, symmetrical evergreens

that attain heights of 90ft and widths of 80ft. It can be eaten raw as a dessert fruit

or processed to various products.

Mango leaves-contain the glucoside, mangiferine.

Sea Grapes or Caulerpa lentillifera are a very nutritious edible seaweed that is

highly prized in the Orient… and looks like and has a similar texture to caviar.

Hydroponic- is a method of growing plants without using soil (i.e., soil less). This

technique instead uses a mineral nutrient solution in a water solvent, allowing the

nutrient uptake process to be more efficient than when using soil. There are

several types or variations of hydroponics.

8
Chlorophyll- is the molecule that absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to

synthesize carbohydrates from CO2 and water. Chlorophyll is the green coloration

in leaves. Chlorophyll is the molecule that traps this 'most elusive of all powers' -

is called a photoreceptor. It is found in the chloroplasts of green plants, and is what

makes green plants, green. The basic structure of a chlorophyll molecule is a

porphyrin ring, co-ordinated to a central atom. This is very similar in structure to

the heme group found in hemoglobin, except that in heme the central atom is iron,

whereas in chlorophyll it is magnesium.

Endemic herbs- refer to wild herbal plants which they are indigenous to a certain

land or habitation.

Organic fertilizer- emphasizes cultivating your farms using plant-derived

fertilizer so that it sustains enriching soil, plants and beneficial insects. This is

achieved by avoiding the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and using

products that nurture soil and the organisms in it.

Soil less technology (refers to Soil less growing methods) - are increasing in

popularity because of the advantages achieved by eliminating soil and opting for

substrates instead. Soil is not a necessary component to grow healthy, thriving

plants.

9
Hanging garden - is a sustainable landscape architecture, an artistic garden or a

small urban farm attached to or built on a wall. They are mainly found in areas

where land is scarce or where the farmer is mobile or not permanent.

Urban Farming- is closely related to Urban agriculture is often confused with

community gardening, homesteading or subsistence farming.

Solution - is a special type of homogeneous mixture composed of two or more

substances. The term aqueous solution is when one of the solvents is water.

Mixture-is a material made up of two or more different substances which are

mixed. A mixture refers to the physical combination of two or more substances in

which the identities are retained and are mixed in the form of solutions,

suspensions and colloids.
