Detailed Lesson Plan in Math 4

This detailed lesson plan outlines teaching place value and the value of digits in numbers up to 100,000 to 4th grade math students. The 50-minute lesson includes preliminary activities like a place value formation game. A review of previous place value concepts is followed by placing number discs on a place value chart and calculating the value of each digit by multiplying the place value by the number of discs. Students then practice identifying the place value and value of digits in different 5-digit numbers in small groups.

III. Procedure

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY PUPILS’ ACTIVITY

A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
1. Drill

- Good morning children - Good morning teacher

- Before we start I want you to sit properly - Students will sit properly

- I want you to stand in front, on my right will - Pupils will be with their group in front of the
be the first group and the other side will be class
the second group.
- Each group will have a set of numbers from - Yes teacher!
O to 9, using this set of numbers you will
form the number I will tell. Is that clear?
- So the first group to form the numbers will
shout “I love numbers, I Love math!” will be
the winner. Ok? Are you ready kids? - Yes teacher!
- So lets’ start, using those sets of numbers I
want you to form this 5 digit number:
- 20,763 - The group will form the number. (20,763)
“I love numbers, I love math”
- Lets’ check, 20,763. Are they correct? - Yes!

- Very good Group 1! You are correct.

- Next number will be 65,721 - The group will form 65,721 “I love numbers,
I love math!

- Okay, lets’ check 65,721. Are they correct? - Yes!

- Great Job! Group 1 got another 1 pt. so if
you will got the next number quickly and
correct you will be the winner. But, if the
group will got their points the game will be
continued. Are you ready? - Yes teacher!
- Next set of number, 46,057 - 46,057 “I love numbers, I love math”
- Nice, lets’ check 46,057
- Are they correct? - Yes teacher
- Very good! Lets’ give the group 1- 5 claps
and they will also receive one star to paste - Pupils will clap their hands for the winning
on their recitation card. group
- Now, you may take your sit.

2. Review

- as a review of yesterdays’ lesson lets

identify the place value of this given number
Lets’ start it from the right. What is the place
value of 4 in 13,254? Raise your hand if you - Pupil 1: Ones
want to answer.
- How about the number 5?
- Pupil 2: Tens
- The place value of 2?
- Pupil 3: Hundred
- The place value of 3
- Pupil 4 : Thousand
- The place value of 1
- Pupil 5: Ten thousand
- Very good! You remember our lesson
yesterday, the place value.

3. Motivation
- Before we start our lesson I want you to look
at this picture. What have you notice in the
first picture? - Pupil1 : pupils are falling in line
- How about here in the second picture?
- What are they doing? - Pupil 2: They are studying…
- How do they arrange? - Pupil 3: Small to big
- Why do you think the smaller pupils are in - Pupil 4: so that they are arrange
front? - Pupil 5: So that they will be able to see what
- Very well said! is in front.
- They consider the others who are smaller so
that they can see what’s in front.
- People must be considerate of others.

4. Discussion

- Now to continue our lesson, I will choose

pupils that will be given a number. Ten Thousands Hundreds Ten Ones
- You will paste them on its proper place Thousan s
value d
- okay lets’ start pasting
Ten Thousands Hundreds Tens One 10,000 1,000 100 100 10 1
Thousan s
d 10,000 1,000 100 100 1
10
10,000 1, 000 100 1

- 10,000 100 1

1
- Very good! They are all place correctly.
- Now, lets’ count how many number disc are
there in each place value?

Pupil 1: (5) five.

- On ones’ place how many?

- We will show the value of each digits by

multiplying the digit or the disc to its place
value.

- Like here example: 1 x 5 = 5

1 ones (place value)

x 5 (number of disc/ the digit ) = 5

- Pupil 2: (2) Two

- How many on the tens place?
Show : 10 x 2 = 20
- So what is the value?
- Pupil 3: (6) six
- On the hundreds place?
Show: 100 x 6 = 600
- What is the value

- Pupil 3: 3(three)
- On the thousands place? Show: 1,000 x 3 = 3,000
- What is the value?

- Pupil 4: 4(four)
- On the Ten Thousands place?
10,000 x 4 = 40,000
- What is the value?

- Very good! Again what did we do to identify - We multiply the place value to the digit.
the value of the number or digit?
- Very well said!

- Then if you will add all the values you will get
the expanded form of the digit
-
40,000+ 3000+600+20+5 = 43,625 1 x 5 = 5
10 x 2 = 20
100 x 6 = 600
1,000 x 3 = 3,000
10,000 x 4 = 40,000___
43,625

- Yes teacher
- Is everything’s clear? - None teacher
- Do you have questions?
- Ok very good.
5. Application
- Lets’ have another activity you will be in your - Students will answer with their group
group. You will just answer the place value
and the value of the given number. then you
will choose a leader who will discuss your
answers

In the number: 78,325 In the number: 78,325

Digit Place Value Value Digit Place Value Value

7 7 Ten thousands 70,000
3 3 Hundreds 300
8 8 thousands 8,000
5 5 ones 5
2 2 tens 20

- Everybody’s finish? - Yes teacher.

- All leaders please be in front - All the leaders will go in front of the class
- Group # 1 what is the place value of 7? - The place value of 7 in 78,325 is ten
thousands place.
- So what is the value of 7? - 70,000

- How did you get the value? - By multiplying the digit by its place value;
7x10,000)
- Correct! Very good!
- Hundreds
- Next group, what is the place value of 3?
- So what is the value of 3? - 300

- How did you get the value? - By multiplication

- Correct! Very good!

- Thousands
- Next one, what is the place value of 8?
- 8,000
- What is the value?
- By multiplying the digits to the place value
- How did you get the value?

- Nexy group, what is the place value of 5? - Ones

- What is the value? - 5

- How did you get it? - By multiplying

- What is the place value of 2? - Tens

- What is the value? - 20

- How did you get it? - By multiplying the number into the given
digits
- Which group were able to give all the
answers correctly? - Groups got the all the answer correctly will
raise their hands.

- Great job! Give 5 claps for them.

- How about the other group? What number
did you missed? - On the value of 7 teacher, we lack one zero
- See you have to be careful in writing the
value if you have to count the zeros you
count. So that your answer will be surely - Yes teacher.
correct be careful next time.
-
6. Generalization

- So again what are the place values in a 5-

digit number starting from the least - Ones-tens- hundreds – thousands- ten
- Very good! thousands
- How do you determine the value in a given - By multiplying the number to its place values
number?
- Very well said,
- now, get your math notebook answer the
following exercise
