Freya’s Unusual Wedding SSR
The book Norse Mythology is written by Neil Gaiman. The book is full of short
mythological stories of the Norse Gods. “Freya’s Unusual Wedding” is one of the stories. A myth
is a story explaining a natural or social phenomenon. Freya’s Unusual Wedding teaches that
sometimes you have to do things for others, even when you don’t want to. The book represents
something that one has to deal with in real life.
The story all starts with Thor waking up with a weird feeling in the sense that something
wasn’t quite right. Thor finds his hammer missing and goes to Loki for help. Loki and Thor go to
Freya to borrow her cloak to fly over different lands to find Mjölnir, with a suspicion that it is
Thrym. Loki finds Thrym in the land of the giants (Jötunheim), who has the hammer hidden
well. Thrym requested Freya’s hand in marriage for them to have the hammer back. When Thor
and Loki return to Freya’s hall and ask if she would, Freya, to Thor and Loki’s surprise, said no.
Thor and Loki had to find another way, so, they ordered a meeting in the Great hall for a
solution. Heimdall had a plan for Thor to dress up as Freya and “get married” to Thrym but take
the hammer and leave instead. Moreover, all goddesses gave jewelry and dresses to Thor and a
big veil to cover his face. When Thrym and “Freya” were in the courtyard “Freya” got Thor’s
hammer back right before the marriage and Thor killed every Giant in his way of leaving.
It should be noted that the characters in Freya’s Unusual Wedding are Thor, Freya, Loki,
and Thrym. Thor is the god of thunder, lightning, storms, strength, and the protection of
mankind. He is the keeper of Mjölnir, the famous hammer with powers enough to destroy the
world. Freya is associated with love, beauty, and fine possessions. She was the person that
Thrym wanted to marry. Freya is the keeper of many powerful possessions of the gods, including

a cloak made from falcon feathers, letting one fly. Thrym was king of the giants and he is the
person that stole Mjölnir. Loki is a shapeshifter that sometimes assists the gods. As stated in the
summary, where most of the story takes place in is Thor’s house, Freya’s hall, Jötunheim (the
land of giants), the courtyard, and the Great hall.
In addition, the plot of the myth is very easy to interpret. The exposition of the book is
very short because right when the hammer is found missing the rise in action starts. So, the
exposition is when Thor wakes up. The rise in action is when THor’s hammer is found missing,
Loki makes a deal with Thrym, Freya declines the deal, and the gods get ready for the wedding.
The climax is when Thor gets married to Thrym but kills all ogres instead. The fall in action is
when Thor and Loki leave with the hammer, back to their home. The resolution is, obviously,
when everything is back to normal and Thor has his hammer back.
In the beginning, Thor began the story worried and stressed after finding his hammer to
be missing. Thor wanted a solution fast and was very impatient. When Freya declined his
arranged deal with Thrym, he became angry, thinking there was no solution. He then notices that
they will slowly think of an idea and that he needs patience. Thor finds a solution and is happy
and nervous with the plan. Then, when the plan succeeds, Thor is happy and safe with his
hammer at last.
Obviously, the dialogue influences the story a lot, for example, when Thrym said what he
wanted in the return for Thor’s hammer caused the whole story’s action to rise. Identically, when
Freya declined the request, there had to be a solution which causes the story to build up
suspense. The suspense also builds up when Thrym points out features of Thor in the wedding
dress, giving suspicion whether it is Freya or not. Luckily, Loki saves the plan with excuses for
his fierce eyes, manly legs, and great hunger.
Overall, I recommend this story to everyone that likes mythological stories, especially
people of my age, because it’s very entertaining, like all myths, and builds up suspense. It really

makes you feel like you are a part of the story. I enjoyed reading this story a lot, and I like the
lesson of the story, sometimes you have to do things for others, even when you don’t want to,
which closely relates to one’s life.
