Fault Level Cal

This document discusses fault level calculations for a housing project in Faridabad, Haryana, India. It calculates the fault level to be 18.4 kA at the 11kV level and 48 kA at the 415V level if grid supply is available. If the backup diesel generators are operating, the combined fault level is calculated to be 35.76 kA. For panel design, a fault level of 50 kA is recommended to be considered.

I. FAULT LEVEL CALCULATIONS

A. FAULT LEVEL CALCULATION INCASE OF GRID SUPPLY OPERATION

The fault level calculations shall be done at 11KV end and separately at 415V end. The
system fault level at 11KV side has been assumed at 350 MVA.

By considering 350 MVA, The further calculations for 11KV end are as follows:

Fault Level in MVA = 350 MVA

Fault Level in KA = Fault Level MVA

Voltage X 1.732

= 350

11X1.732

= 18.37 KA

Say 18.4 KA.

II. Fault level Calculations at 415 Volt end :-

GRID supply is available and Two Transformers of 2250 KVA are operating
independently as envisaged.

Base MVA = 2.25 MVA

% Impedance of Transformer
at 2250 KVA base = 6.25%

Fault level MVA = 2.25 X 100 = 36 MVA

6.25

36
Fault level KA = = 48 KA
0.433 x 1.732

B. Fault Current for DG Set in case of DG Set operation :-.

Total no of DG Set Proposed are Two Nos. 1000 KVA, One No. 750 KVA and One
No. 380 KVA.

Calculation of fault current for 1000 KVA DG Set.

If - (Full Load) = 2086 Amp

Xd’ - Sub Transient Reactance = 0.17 Per Unit (As Per Stamford)

Hence, Fault Current = If / Xd’

= 2086 / 0.17

=12.27 KA

Calculation of fault current for 750 KVA DG Set.

If - (Full Load) = 1043 Amp

Xd’ - Sub Transient reactance = 0.14 Per Unit ( As Per Stamford)

Hence, Fault current = If / Xd’

= 1043 / 0.14

= 7.45 KA

Calculation of fault current for 380 KVA DG Set.

If - (Full Load) = 528 Amp

Xd” - Sub Transient reactance = 0.14 Per Unit ( As Per Stamford)

Hence, Fault current = If / Xd”

= 528 / 0.14

= 3.77 KA

Fault Level of 2 No 1000 KVA 1 No. 750 KVA and 1 No. 380 KVA = 12.27 +
12.27+7.45+3.77=35.76KA

Hence fault level of 50 KA shall be considered for main L.T. / DG Panel design.
