Lab Report 01

The document describes the parts and functions of a hydraulic bench. It is made up of components that provide controlled fluid flow for experiments. Key parts include: a centrifugal pump that moves fluid from a sump tank to the bench; a control valve that regulates flow rate; a volumetric tank that stores fluid; and a dump valve, actuator, and overflow that control fluid exiting the system. The hydraulic bench allows experiments on fluid properties and calculations of coefficients.

Experiment no 1
To investigate and determine different parts of hydraulic bench.

1. Objective
 Identify different parts of hydraulic bench.

2. Apparatus
 Hydraulic bench

3. Theory
3.1. Hydraulic bench
The basic hydraulic bench is made up of volumetric structure that is used to provide the
guided and the controlled flow of the fluid which is under consideration. Hydraulic bench is
the most common lab apparatus in most of the fluid mechanics lab. Hydraulic bench is used
to make different types of calculations and to find out different types of properties and
specifications of the fluid. By the help of hydraulic bench, we can calculate different types of
coefficients like the coefficient of velocity, coefficient of discharge. We can find out the
velocity of the trajectory of the jet coming from the nozzle.

Series of experiments that we can perform by using the hydraulic bench are as follows:

 Dead weight calibrator

 Metacentric height
 Water hammer
 Pelton turbine
 Free and forced vertices
 Flow meter demonstration
 Laminar flow demonstration
 Orifice and free jet flow
 Radial flow turbine

3.2. Parts of Hydraulic bench

 Centrifugal Pump
In the hydraulic bench centrifugal pump receives water or fluid from the sump tank and
provide it for the further experimentations to the next parts.

 Sump tank
Sump tank is that part of the hydraulic bench which is used to store the water for the
hydraulic bench to store water and perform the different types of the experimentations. It is
located just beneath the hydraulic bench. It has almost the capacity in it to store about 160 L
of water or any other fluid.

 Vertical pipe
Vertical pump in the hydraulic pipe performs important role in the flow of the floodlit
transports water to the upper parts of the hydraulic bench with the help of the pump.

 Control valve
As the name control valve shows it means that it controls the flow of water or the fluid in the
hydraulic bench. Which can be done by the increase or decrease of the speed or velocity of
the water.

 Connector
Connector is an important part for the hydraulic bench. It provides the location or the path
for the connection of different types of accessories for the equipment related to the
requirements of the experiments.

 Channel
We can get the idea about this part by its name as it shows the channel or the path for the
flow or the movement of the fluid which in most of the case is water.

 Drain valve
In our daily life drain means the path for the excretion or the flow for the extra or residual
materias.in the case of hydraulic bench it is the path for the outflow of water from the
hydraulic bench.

 Side channels
It serves somehow like the connector. It can be used to attach different types of the
accessories to the hydraulic bench.

 Volumetric tank
It is next to the side channels. It is tank that is used to store the water coming from the tank.
The purpose for the installation for this part is that so we can accommodate low or high flow
rates.

 Stilling baffle
We can say that it is the part of the volumetric tank. It is used to make the flow steady i.e. to
decrease the turbulence in the flow of fluid which is coming from the volumetric tank.

 Scale and tapping

It is the part in hydraulic bench that provides us with the scale so that we can get our
required readings. We have installed a sight tube and a scale from where we can get our
readings.

 Actuator
Actuator is used to control or monitor the flow of fluid through the dump valve. When we lift
the actuator, we are controlling the movement of the dump valve. When the actuator is lifted
at the age of 90 degree the dump valve is made opened.

 Dump valve
It is the valve that is installed at the base of the volumetric tank. It provides the exit at for the
fluid too flow out from the hydraulic bench. When the dump valve is opened water is moved
to the sump tank so that it can be treated and can be used again for the further
experimentation.

 Overflow
Overflow is the common phenomenon when we are dealing with the storage of the fluid or
like wearer’s overflow is the part of the hydraulic bench which is used to store the water
which is above the safe limit or the storage limit of the volumetric tank which in most of the
cases is 46 L.

 Starter
It is the on or off button for the hydraulic bench to start or stop our experiment at the
desired position.
