1. General description
1.1Conforming to Regulations and Construction Features
This set of lifesaving appliance is a special equipment intended for
shipboard launching and recovering a lifeboat (i.e launching the lifeboat it
serves from the parent ship to sea level as well as recover the lifeboat to
original stowed position from sea level), its performance conforms to the
requirements of the Amendments to SOLAS 1974---MSC.47(66) ,
International LSA Code MSC.48(66), IMO Resolution MSC81(70) and
MSC.216(82),MSC.218(82) and MSC.226(82).
This lifesaving appliance is capable of safely launching a lifeboat it serves
to outboard position depending on the lifeboat’s own weight (it’s no needed
for the parent ship to supply power) under adverse condition of a trim of up to
10 degree and a list of up to 20 degree either way, and also can safely lower
the lifeboat.
The operator form a position within the lifeboat can control lowering and
stopping of boat depending on the remote control wires, and also the
operator on deck can observe the whole process of the lifeboat lowering and
hoisting,
1.2 Working principle
1.2.1 Working principle for launching boat
After release the winch brake, the gravity of the lifeboat will drive the drum
to wind out wires so as to ensure the davit arm along with the lifeboat slightly
to outboard, while arm on the support of the davit (at this time the T-type hook
has automatically separate from the head of the davit arm), the lifeboat
begins lowering till to water surface.
1.2.2 Working principle of recovering boat
After starting boat winch, the el. Motor drive the drum to wind in wires to
ensure the boat hoisting, while the ”T” hook on the head of floating block
enters into the head of davit arm, it begins pushing the davit arm moving
upward , thus, the lifeboat will be pulled back to inboard position till to original
stowing position, at this at this time, the davit arm push the limit switch to
automatically cut off the power to winch motor so as to avoid the davit frame
over-forced.

2. Brief introduction
2.1Construction composition and features
This set of lifesaving appliance mainly consists of boat davit and
boatwinch.
2.1.1 Construction composition of davit and features
This boat davit mainly consists of davit arm, frame, pivot unit,
floating block, boat fall chain, limit unit, fasting unit, hanging-off unit,
stop unit and remote control unit etc. (See Fig. 1)

(Fig. 1)
The davit arm is a jib for lifting lifeboat, supported on the frame though
pivot unit. While recovering and launching lifeboat, the davit arm can rotate
along the pivot unit of the davit frame.
The floating block is acted as moving sheave for reducing the load on the
boat winch, and while the davit arm recovering to its home position, the
gravity of the boat completely applies on the davit arm and release the force
on wire rope through the “T” hook of the floating block.
The limit unit is a secure unit for avoiding the davit frame overloaded
3/16
during recovering.
The fastening unit is a unit for tying lifeboat, while the ship swing in the
wave, this et of unit can assure the lifeboat constantly stable and the davit not
swing up and down.
After the davit arm is turned out to outboard position, the hanging-off unit
may be regarded as a auxiliary pendent attached on the aux. Hook of the
boat so as to ensure the main hook completely separating from the main wire
rope, hence the working maintaining the lifeboat hook can be achieved.
The stop unit is a security unit fix the davit arm on the davit frame.
The remote control unit enable the operator control the raising and
lowering of winch counterweight from a position within the boat or besides the
shipside.
2.1.2 Construction composition and features of boat winch
The boat winch is a power source of recovering lifeboat , electric hoisting
and gravity lowering, is of two symmetric construction, right-and left-type,
suitable arranging on the symmetric deck. Manual quick releasing unit and
automatically manual & electric hoisting unit and electric interlocking switch
may preventing the personnel accidents caused by miss-operation.
This boat winch mainly consists of drum, reduction gear box, speed limit
clutch, one-way brake and counterweight etc. (For details, see Sketch 2)
This winch motor is one-way turning, i.e electric hoisting boat
function, it supply direct power of the lifesaving equipment, transmit
the power to the davit through reduction gear box and the wire rope
connected to the drum to the davit so as to control hoisting &
lowering of lifeboat.

B Reduction Gear Box
C Motor

E Speed Limit Clutch
F One-way Brake
G Up Inserting Position
H Counterweight
(Fig.2)
The speed limit clutch unit connects to the counterweight, where, the
speed-limiting part may control the lowering speed of the boat, the clutch
mechanism may transmit the power to the drum so as to accomplish the
hoisting and recovering of boat.
The one-way brake connects to the motor through gear shaft, only
controlling the stop during lowering.
The counterweight connects to the friction lining of the speed limiting clutch
unit, usually kept in level position. While raising counterweight, inner & out
friction lining in separate condition, the drum completely separates from
motor, hence the power caused by the drum reversely turning don’t transmit
to the electric motor to drive it turn reversely to damage it. At this time, putting
down counterweight, the tracing force of the boat will firstly transmit to the
one-way brake through drum ad speed limit clutch unit, firstly transmit to the
one way brake, the brake actuates and oblige the lifeboat stop lowering, at
the same time prevent motor turning reversely so as to protect the motor.
During electrically hoisting lifeboat , if the power abruptly switch off, or the
lifeboat can’t be completely back to the home position, put the manual handle
into the handle inserting position to accomplish manual recovering boat.
(Note: there should be put down the manual handle to prevent the
accident when there is no person beside the manual handle.)
During lowering empty davit arm (without lifeboat), if the floating block ‘s
self weight can not overcome the friction moment caused by the drum turning
reverse, only raise the counterweight and insert the manual handle into the
”inserting position of manual handle for lowering” so as to quickly lowering
5/16
empty hook , thus the boat fall chain can lower to sea level so as to achieve
recovering lifeboat.

4. Operating instruction
4.1 Operating procedures for launching boat
This boat davit is capable of lowering a fully loaded lifeboat with full
complement of passengers to sea level, the detailed operating process are as
below.
1) Preparations for launching boat
a . Remove all obstacles.
b . Check whether the hanging-off rope connects with lifeboat.
2) Preparations for starting (See following sketch)
a.operate the manual handle of boat
winch(Insert the manual handle into
the Up” position ), tighten the boat
falls to slightly hoist the boat so as
to release the force on the stop rod
of the stop unit. Attention: After
finishing manual operating, the
manual handle must be taken out.
b. Release the stop unit and the fasting unit will be released too.
7/16
doesn’t exceed the recovering load to stowed position on deck, detailed
operating procedure is as below.
1) While the boat sail under the boat davit(at this time, the bow is at the
same direction of ship bow), the deck operator put down boat fall chain, if
the floating block’s self weight of the davit can not overcome the reverse
friction moment of the boat winch, only by raising counterweight,
inserting the manual handle into the “Down” position, empty hook can be
quickly lowered down. ( Note: Upon the completion of manual
operating, the manual handle must be taken out). The boat operator
within the boat separately holds the chain link and hang on hook.
2) The deck operator on deck control the winch button to tight boat falls so
as to ensure the boat hoisting, and at all time observe the hoisting of
lifeboat.
3) After the lifeboat is hoisted to its set position, the “T” hook of floating
block enters into the davit arm to push the davit arm turning in from
outboard to inboard position and ensure it to stowed position, at this
time, the davit arm pushes the limit switch to switch off the power to
motor and ensure the winch stop rotating. (See Sketch 4).
During electrical recovering boat, if the power is switched off, or
the lifeboat can not be completely recovered to home position,
insert the manual handle of boat winch into “Recovering”
position to recover the lifeboat to stowed position.
(Fig.4) (Fig.5)
4) After the lifeboat is recovered to home position, reset the stop rod of
stop unit to home position to fix the davit arm, then the deck operator
slightly raise the winch counterweight , the lifeboat slowly lowers till the
boat falls on “T” hook of the floating block is not forced. (See sketch 5).
5) Mount the fastening unit and guy system in original stowed position and
8/16
fix the lifeboat.
6) The operators within the boat leave boat, switch off power, then the ship
may normally sail.
4.3 Operating procedure of hanging-off unit
1) Preparations
a. Remove obstacles.
b. Fasten the pendents on the auxiliary hook of the lifeboat.
2) Open the stop unit and fastening unit as per the launching procedure of
boat.
3) Turning out of lifeboat and maintenance of boat hook
1) Raise winch counterweight to
release winch brake, the lifeboat
begins turning out.
2) After the lifeboat is turned out to full
outboard position, the pendents will
pull the lifeboat close to the
shipboard, while the weight of lifeboat
completely applies on the pendents,
put down winch counterweight.
3) Separate the boat fall chain from
the main hook of the lifeboat.
4) The maintaining personnel embark
and maintain the hook.
4) After the maintaining personnel lease the boat, the operator on boat
connect the boat fall chain to the main hook of lifeboat, control the winch
button to ensure the boat hoisting, while the pendents is completely not
forced, release the connection between the pendents ad the auxiliary hook of
the lifeboat.
5) Recover the lifeboat to the stowed position based on the recovering
procedure, and correctly install the stop unit and fastening unit etc.
