cultures
1. It is inevitable for us to meet people coming from other cultures. Cite at
least three ways by which you can avoid miscommunication and
misinterpretation of ideas when talking to them.

1. Given that cultural differences create multiple varieties of English from

different countries, we need to be aware to be able to understand that these
differences do exist and that might help us to avoid miscommunication and
misunderstanding.

2. The varieties of English that exists from different cultures may be

differentiated by vocabularies, manner of discourse etc., but one common
differentiator that usually causes misunderstanding is pronunciation, the
differences in pronunciation may cause misinterpretation of the message that
we would like to convey. English Pronunciation is very different from each
countries. Being able to understand the differences and to learn the proper
phonetics of the English language may help diminish misunderstanding.

3. Another factor that differs from one country to the other is the use of
gestures and body language, some specific body gestures are might be to

countries, having the knowledge of such differences further reduces
miscommunication and misunderstanding.

9. How does non-verbal communication in general or bodily gestures in

particular pose miscommunication between wo persons coming from
different cultures? Cite some examples that you know.
- Certain reasons exist as to why specific bodily gestures are reckoned to be
offensive in other countries/cultures. One example that I am familiar with
and is also narrated in the book is the ok sign which looks like this

which signifies the word “okay” to most English speaking/western
countries, but is deemed to be offensive in japan; which signifies money
and, in some middle eastern cultures; as a threat, that is why the use of
gestures must be given some prior thought to avoid miscommunication.

10. Give one situation when you should use formal language and
another situation when you should use informal language. What
expressions will you use? How do they differ from each other?
- I am fond of giving spontaneous symposiums to people particularly in
times wherein I encounter misinterpreted/fabricated/preconceived notions
of certain subject matters that I am passionate about, in situations like
these I would usually use an informal register of the English language
because it is unprepared and usually happens during casual social
interactions but in situations where I am invited to or I am given a task to
give out presentations and reports in groups of people, I would use the
formal register of the English language.
