INTRODUCTION
It is proposed to re-construct the historically relevant Glastonbury stone arch to a new site at Church Street, Mexborough.
A basic examination of ground conditions was carried out by excavating a single trial pit in the proposed location of the arch
th
on 12 november 2014. This revealed made ground over a former roadway with sandstone and stiff clay ratchel at a depth
of approx 600mm.
It is therefore considered that the arch be built off a plain slab foundation cast at this level and set back from the face of the
retaining wall so as not to apply any additional surcharge pressure.

Slab design:

Total Load on Slab = 137Kn from arch (Dead)

2
UDL = 5Kn/m (imposed)
2
Soil surcharge = 0.3×18 = 5.5Kn/m (Dead)
2
Slab = 0.3×1.0×23.6 = 7.08Kn/m
Length of arch = 4.87m Width approx 600mm
Assume slab size 5.5m × 1.2m

Total Load = 137+(5.5×1.2×(5+5.5+7.08) = 253Kn

2 2
GBP = 253/5.5×1.2 = 38Kn/m < 55Kn/m
