INTRODUCTION

I. ABSTRACT

HDB1012 Community Engagement Project (CEP) is designed to ensure that the

students will obtain some basis elements and apply in CEP as to support the students‟
development. It focuses on developing students who are able to apply soft skills
involving social grace, communication, thinking skills, team work and leadership. The
social and value emphasis in this community-based project is in line with the UTP
mission to produce well-rounded graduates.

HOPE 3.0 UTP is now back in 2019 with the aim of taking over from the previous HOPE
members and continue to organize the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program to not
only help the people in need, but at the same time provide a solution with long-lasting impact
towards the people and environment in the indigenous villages. To achieve
few of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), HOPE UTP 3.0 with the
tagline “Your hope, to ours” aims to continue providing ecologically, cost-free lighting and
clear and healthy water in the rivers to the community. We aim to provide villagers that need
the solar powered street lamps and clean water through mud ball throwing events, hoping it
would ease their lives.

The CSR program is divided into 3 stages. The first stage involves fund raising,
location selection and event day planning. Various aspects are taken into
consideration for the location selection to ensure that purpose of the program is
achieved. The second stage of the program involves the preparation of material
required, and the construction of the main part of the lamp and mud balls making and
fermentation. The additional fund raised would be used to purchase basic daily needs for the
villagers. The stage involves the assembling of the solar powered street lamp and mud ball
throwing at the location selected and conduction of activities planned by the committee.

The program provides a platform for the volunteers to explore the capability of
green technology in improving the lives of the society. As students of engineering
background, the program allows the students to implement their respective knowledge
and skills as well as creativity into the construction of the solar street lamp and mud ball

making. Therefore, we hope that the program will not only benefit the villagers
but also the students who took part in the project.

II. BACKGROUND

Our project is entitled HOPE UTP 3.0. Previously, we had HOPE UTP 2.0 which
focuses on installing solar lamp at a rural area which has lack of light supply and providing
water filtration system to the villager. The reason why we choose solar lamp is because it
does not require external supply, instead it uses solar energy which is one of the renewable
sources. It is also a fact that HOPE UTP 1.0 managed to get 3rd place for best project which
proves that the project was a success. Therefore, we decided to continue their journey by
forming HOPE UTP 3.0 where we will be installing not just solar lamp, but a making mud
balls for the rivers and provide education awareness.

HOPE UTP 3.0 is indeed committed in providing feasible and sustainable solar
lamps to the villages which are having limited access to electricity. We are aiming to
achieve the one or more United Nation‟s Sustainable Development Goals at the same
time to give better exposure on the usage of green technology.

III. MISSION AND AIMS OF THE PROJECT

As part of the community development project, one of the missions we uphold is to

provide significant resources to the villagers who facing plight in order to obtain clean
water and light source. These resources play a vital role in providing a convenient
lifestyle to the villagers in terms of providing some lighting at night with solar lamps
and clean water resources provided by the water filter system.

Besides, we also aim to nurture the people in the community regarding the
knowledge and importance of light resource and water resource. Knowledge parallel
to these resources is significant as it gives instruction in order to achieve the solar
lamps‟ and mud balls‟ efficiency almost 100%. Thus, utilizing them in a proper and
well-mannered will help the villagers to obtain a successful sustainability resource.

Next, we aim to accelerate the adoption of solar technology to conserve our

environment and provide an environmentally friendly, sustainable and conflict-free
power supply. This solar lamp is a reliable asset which is independent of external
power supply which leads to fewer complications in installing and utilizing. Thus,
villagers conveniently can operate and use it without any complication thoughts.
Our next aim is enabling villagers or outsiders to become self-sufficient of water
requirements and enable communities to have access to clean water by cleaning the river
nearby their village through mud balls throwing events.

IV. OBJECTIVES

The University Social Responsibility (USR) program by HOPE UTP 3.0 is a continuous
project with an effective improvisation to lend hands to the communities with significant
resources in an adequate number. The main objectives of USR program are as below:

• To lighten up the villagers‟ life by granting them with sustainable solution to the issue
faced.

• To ease up villagers‟ vision at night in order to ensure a safe movement

especially in dark area.

• To increase the production of instant and good quality water by throwing mud balls in the
nearby rivers

• To provide a better knowledge regarding significance of light and water to the

villagers.

• To nurture the notion of responsibility, humanity and morality to the volunteers

in this program.

• To provide resources which are environmental friendly as solar lamps and water will not
pollute or harm the surrounding with their outcomes.

• To provide a free resource to the villagers with solar lamps as it is helps with financial
savings due to reduce expenditure.

UTP USR PROJECT ALIGNMENT

HOPE UTP 3.0 is considered a project-based learning (PBL) as it involves engineering

knowledge and skills to implement the project which is installing solar system and
mud ball fermentation processes. PBL could actually help students in developing skill for
living in a knowledge-based, highly technological society. In this era, skills for instances,
teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, time management, communication skills,
research gathering, data synthesis, and modern tech tools utilization are now a
requirement for society nowadays in order to solve highly complex problems, instead
of just mastering the fundamental skills such as reading, calculating and writing.

HOPE UTP 3.0 is a project not only aiming to install the solar lamp and mud ball throwing
but at the same time also aiming to share the importance of safety, importance of using clean
water, the working principle of solar energy and clean water to the youths in order to
develop awareness. Along with the help of lecturers from UTP and attending
workshops, the knowledge that is been shared to educate the society can definitely
bring a positive impact in terms of creating new exposure for them to think beyond and
creatively.

Hands on experience will also be added in the module hence will prove
that the project is align with one of the UTP USR framework. Next, socioeconomic is highly
related to the differences in status or class between groups of people which are usually
measured by their education, income and occupation. In Perak, there are still villages that are
underdeveloped and having improper or insufficient water source and light source in their
area. Other than that, there is also neglected „Orang Asli‟ villages who are in need of
development attention from the society as well as the government. It is understandable that in
order to get help from the government, it would be more tedious and takes longer time to get
a respond since the government has a lot of other on-going projects. Therefore, USR is
important to reduce their burden and narrow the rich-poor gap in an effort to stabilize
the country‟s socioeconomic level.

HOPE UTP 3.0„s objective to improve the lifestyle of the people in need should be align with
one of the UTP‟s USR framework which is the socioeconomic as the instalment of the solar
lamp and clean water could spread awareness as well as providing them the basic needs as a
stepping stone for the villages to be motivated to think critically and innovatively. At the
same time, if this particular project is able to get the media attention, more help in terms of

21 | P a g e
H O P E U T P 3 . 0 | Our Hope, to yours

infrastructure development are able to be sent to the villages thus to overcome

underdevelopment.
Last but not least, environmental problems have increased excessively as the result of human
activities and technological development. However luckily, the importance of conservation
and preservation of ecosystems actions has successfully arisen and well spread across the
world. Even though awareness has widely been spread, the progress in Malaysia is going at a
very slow pace thus stunting the country‟s environment friendly tech development such as the
implementation of renewable energies.

No doubt with HOPE UTP 3.0 project of solar lamp instalment contributes in terms of
transforming Malaysia into an eco-friendly country. Besides that, there are also some villages
that have no access to education which then leads them to not have any environmental
awareness exposure. Therefore, in an effort of installing solar lamps, would little by little
instil curiosity in the hearts of the society and allowing them to naturally develop interest in
innovation and creativity which will eventually lead them to environmental awareness.

PROJECT SIGNIFICANT

I. CREATIVITY, INNOVATION AND IMPROVISATION

The course HDB 1013 Community Engagement Project is a compulsory course for 3rd
year Universiti Teknologi Petronas PETRONAS (UTP) students to take in order to fulfil
our graduation requirement and this year would be the fifth time it is been conducted
in UTP. Previously, tons of projects had been successfully carried out either in within
Malaysia itself or overseas under the supervision of extraordinary UTP lecturers and
administrative staffs executive.

Furthermore, it is also mandatory that the projects scope should cover up or achieve at least
one of the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. Thus, creativity and innovation
plays as essential role in selection of the CSR project to ensure that the idea is new and
beneficial to the UTP community, society and having an on-going positive effects upon the
implementation of the project.

Last year, a seniors‟ project called HOPE UTP has won 3rd place for best project
held. They did a project on installing solar lamps at rural areas. Since, their project has
proven to be such a big success we decided to continue their journey by forming HOPE
UTP 3.0. Along with their guidance, we can surely learn from their mistakes and apply
some improvisation in an effort to ameliorate our project standard. In this case we have
improvised to add in, water filtering instalment and provide education to the kids at the
chosen area to better understand how solar lamps and water filters work.

Generally, this project will be divided into 2 main instalments which are Solar
Lamp Instalment and Water Filter Instalment. And each main instalment, are divided
into 2 phases. First phase would be that we purchase the materials for the solar lamp
from Incitement, a global movement independent event organizers and hand build the
solar lamp ourselves under the supervision of the lab technicians. As for the water
filter instalment, we are planning to collaborate with a Global Peace company by
providing them financial support and manpower. The second phase of the project
would involve the assembling of solar lamp on the poles and install the ready-made
filters at the selected area. As for the lamps, basic knowledge or engineering is

23 | P a g e
H O P E U T P 3 . 0 | Our Hope, to yours

required and provides the participants a platform to apply their knowledge and skills in a fun,
creative and innovative way.

II. PRACTICALITY

Some of the rural villages in Perak still have no access to the basic necessities such as in this
case, electricity and a clean water source. These villages are often
too dark at night which is dangerous as it contributes to poor visibility and making it
nearly impossible to conduct any activities in the night. Besides that, some villages are
still having dirty and sludgy waters in their river. Based on the statistics given by Jabatan
Kemajuan Orang Asli Malaysia (JAKOA), there are at least 53 000 unfortunate
individuals living in a pitch-black environment every night. By providing solar powered
street lamps and water filtration to these underprivileged community, we are able to improve
their day to day lives. This would result in a step closer to eradicate serious energy poverty in
Malaysia.

III. EDUCATION AWARENESS

Alongside our instalment projects, we decided to take the opportunity to raise environmental
awareness and to give an exposure to the kids at the chosen area in further understanding
how the solar lamp and mud ball fermentation works to improve the environment. By sharing
our knowledge to the kids, we were hoping that this could
allow kids to be more creative and convince them to think beyond. This serves as a
purpose to develop connection with the kids thus making this project a meaningful
one to the community there rather than to just come and go. It is without a doubt that
the future success of children and society begins with a solid base of education. We
strongly believe that in order to change the mind-set of kids on education, we need to
figure out a unique way to bring this awareness to the community especially youths
since they are the future leaders. Hands on approach are one of the methods we will
be using to educate and in an effort to make it more interesting to the eyes of the
youths.

IV. EXPECTED OUTCOME

The main objective of the CSR project is to help the underprivileged community in
Kampung Sungai Perah, Perak by improving their life‟s quality. Thus, the expected
outcomes of the project are as following:

a. Safety of the villagers (Impact Factor)

A dark area often leads to accidents or it will attract the burglar. Therefore, installation of
solar street lamps in the village will provide light at night. This will reduce the number of
accidents occurred due to the darkness of that particular area and the safety of the villagers
will be ensured.

b. Healthy of the villagers (Impact Factor)

Unclean water source may cause a lot of diseases such as Cholera, Typhoid, Dysentery and
etcetera. This health issue may lead to death if the villagers do not cure their illness
effectively. As such, throwing of mud balls in the village‟s river will ensure the cleanliness of
water and this will be directly reduce the probability to get those diarrheic diseases.

c. Sustainable solutions with green energy (Sustainable Factor)

Solar powered street lamps and mud balls are used in this project. It operates with the aids of
solar energy and the green technologies. Hence, there would be no use of electricity grids.
We expect the villagers to continue receiving the benefits from these solar powered street
lamps and mud balls without paying for any electricity bill.

d. Experience of the organization team

We hope that the participants involved in the project either directly or indirectly would learnt
something beneficial and impactful for their future. We also expect that the soft skills and
practical skills of the participants to be enhanced towards the end of the projects.

CONCLUSION

As our group name, HOPE UTP 3.0, speaks for itself when serving the villagers in
need of important resource such as light and water to lighten up their life with
convenient needs. By installation of solar lamp has a great effect to the community as
the movement in dark place which light up by the solar lamp can be coordinated well
by the villagers. Supply of clean water is expected to be resolved with the throwing of mud
balls in the rivers nearby. Due to these, there might be an opportunity to ease the burden of
villagers paying for electricity and water bill. Practically, we as the organisers will endure
ample of benefits due to this program in terms of wide horizon of experience and exposure. A
well sense of ethics and humanity been planted among ourselves by helping those who are in
needs. The project mainly been done to gain impactful experience in lending hand to the
community in need to enlighten the community life in coping with resources parallel to
sustaining them.
