This guide will explain how to use Urdu on ‫۔‬ ‫و‬ ‫ل‬ ‫اردو ا‬ ‫اس‬
the computer. After Urdu support has been
installed and it is possible to toggle between ‫ی اور اردو‬ ‫ا‬ ‫و‬ ‫اردو‬
English and Urdu, two additional items are ٓ
‫ے‬ ‫اردو‬ ‫ا‬ (Toggle)
needed to type Urdu easily; appropriate Urdu
fonts and a phonetic Urdu keyboard layout. (‫رڈ‬ ) ‫ی‬ ‫اور‬ ‫اردو‬ ‫ا‬ ‫دو ا‬
A phonetic keyboard layout is very helpful for
new computer users, so it should be installed ‫۔‬ ‫ورت‬
along with the default keyboard provided with ٓ ٔ ٓ
‫ا ز ر‬ ،‫اوٹ‬ ‫ی‬
Urdu language support. For the phonetic
layout, the Urdu alphabet keys are laid out ‫ی‬ ‫دہ‬ ‫ا‬ '' ‫و‬ ‫''اردو ز ن‬ ‫اس‬ ‫د ر‬
according to sound, so for example, to type ‫ب‬
the B key will be used, and to type ‫ م‬the M ‫۔ اردو‬ ‫ی‬
key will be used. Most of the other Urdu ٓ
‫۔‬ ‫د‬ ‫ اردو وف اوازوں‬، ‫ی‬
alphabet can also be typed conveniently in the ً
same manner. Urdu fonts are needed so the M ''‫اور ''م‬ B ''‫''ب‬
typed Urdu text can be displayed in the way it ٓ
is normally seen in Urdu books and ‫ا‬ ‫ا‬ ‫وف‬ ‫ا‬ ‫۔ اردو‬ ‫ل‬ ‫ا‬
documents. This guide will describe the ‫ورت اس‬ ‫۔ اردو‬
download, installation and usage of Urdu ً

Urdu fonts:
1. Installation of fonts and keyboard ‫ی‬ ‫اور‬ -1
The phonetic keyboard layout and Urdu http://cle.org.pk/software/ulpack.htm
fonts installer can be downloaded from the ٔ ٓ
‫۔ا و‬ ‫ڈاون ڈ‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ی اور اردو‬ ‫ار ا‬

Open your browser, type the URL in
“Address” bar and press “Enter” key. Now Urdu Package ‫۔ اب‬ ‫د‬ "Enter"
click “Urdu Package” link, “File Download” ‫۔‬ "File Download"
dialog box will appear. Click on “Save File”
button, as shown in figure 1(a). ‫د‬ (a) 1 "Save File"

Wizard dialog box appears. Restart the system ‫م‬ (Unicode) Setup Wizard
to complete installation process.

2. Selecting the Phonetic Urdu ‫ی‬ -2
Keyboard
After the installation is complete, on the ‫اور‬ ‫دز ن ر‬ ‫ر‬ ،
task bar, click on language bar and select
‫۔‬ ‫د‬ 6 ، ‫"ز ن‬Urdu"
“Urdu” language, as shown in figure 6.
On selecting “Urdu”, keyboard icon will ‫۔‬ ‫ی‬ ‫ر‬ * "Urdu”
appear on the task bar. Click on the icon and
select “CLE Urdu Phonetic 2L v1.0 "CLE Urdu ‫ی ں‬ ‫ب‬ ‫د‬ ‫اس‬
Keyboard” among the available Urdu

Open Microsoft Office Word 2007
document and verify that language on ‫اور‬ ‫ د و‬Microsoft Office Word 2007
language bar is Urdu. If not then follow the ٓ

3. Selecting the Font
On Formatting toolbar, open the font drop -3
down list by clicking on arrow button, Urdu ٔ
‫ڈراپ ڈاون‬ ‫ری( ل ر‬ ‫ ) و‬Formatting
fonts have been included in the list, as shown
in figure 5. Select the required font by ‫اس‬ ‫اردو‬
clicking on it.

4. Selecting Text Direction -4
On Formatting toolbar, there are text
direction icons. Click on “Right-to-Left” icon ‫ری( ل ر‬ ‫ )و‬Formatting
for Urdu, as shown in figure 5.
