Rectilinear Kinematics:
Erratic Motion
When a particle has erratic or changing motion
then its position, velocity, and acceleration
cannot be described by a single continuous
mathematical function along the entire path.
For this reason, it is convenient to represent the
motion as a graph.
A graph of the motion that relates any two of the
variables s, v, a, t can be drawn.
Rectilinear Kinematics:
Erratic Motion
The s-t, v-t, and a-t Graphs.
To construct the v-t graph given the s-t graph, the
equation v = ds/dt should be used, since it
relates the variables s and t to v. This equation
states that;

The a-t graph can be constructed from the v-t
graph in a similar manner,

Erratic Motion
Since differentiation reduces a polynomial of
degree n to that of degree n - 1, then if the s-t
graph is parabolic (a second-degree curve), the v-t
graph will be a sloping line (a first-degree curve),
and the a-t graph will be a constant or a horizontal
line (a zero-degree curve).
Rectilinear Kinematics:
Erratic Motion
If the a-t graph is given, the v-t graph may be
constructed by using a = dv/dt, written as

Similarly, if the v-t graph is given, it is possible to
determine the s-t graph using v = ds/dt, written as

Anyone who has observed a baseball in motion
has observed projectile motion. The ball moves
in a curved path and returns to the ground.

1. To start an avalanche on a mountain slope, an artillery
shell is fired with an initial velocity of 300 m/s at 55.0°
above the horizontal. It explodes on the mountainside
42.0 s after firing. What are the x and y coordinates of the
shell where it explodes, relative to its firing point?
Ans:
x = 7227.06 m
y = 1672.42 m

2. A stone is thrown from the top of a building upward
at an angle of 30° to the horizontal with an initial
speed of 20.0 m/s. The height from which the stone
is thrown is 45 m above the ground.
a). t = 4.22s
b). vf = 35.8 m/s

3. A shot is fired with an angle of 45° with the
horizontal with a velocity of 300 ft/s. Find the
maximum height and range that the projectile can
cover.

PROBLEM SET
Sample 2.
3. The ball is thrown off the top of the building.
If it strikes the ground at B in 3 s, determine
the initial velocity VA and the inclination angle
𝜃A at which it was thrown. Also, find the
magnitude of the ball's velocity when it strikes
the ground.
4. A projectile is fired with a speed of v = 60 m/s
at an angle of 60°. A second projectile is then
fired with the same speed 0.5 s later. Determine
the angle 𝜃 of the second projectile so that the
two projectiles collide. At what position (x, y) will
this happen?
5. Determine the angle of the super elevation for a
200 m highway curve so that there will be no side
thrust at a speed of 90 kph.
