Practicality

The document discusses the principle of practicality in assessment. Practicality refers to the relationship between the resources available for a test, including human, material, and time resources, and what is required to develop and use the test. Practicality is defined in terms of cost, time, administration, and scoring/evaluation. A practical test should not be too expensive, long, complicated to administer, or difficult to score within the allocated time frame.

ASSESSMENT
‘’PRACTICALITY’’

Ruiz Serrano Luz Marina

-Practicality-
Defined as the relationship between
available resources for the test.
Human, material and time resources
that will be required, development, and
use of the test.

Brown defines practicality in terms of:

• Cost
• Time
• Administration
• Scoring/Evaluation

COST
• The test should not be too
expensive.
• The cost for the test has to stay
within the budget.

TIME
• The test should not be too long
or too short.
• The test should stay within
appropriate time constraints.

ADMINISTRATION
• The test should not be too
complicated or too complex to
conduct.
• The test should be quiet simple
to administer.

SCORING/EVALUATION
• The scoring/evaluation process
should fits into the time allocation.
• The test should be accompanied
with scoring rubrics, key answers,
and so on to make it easy to Faiz, A. & Wulandari T (2014). Principles of Languages

Example
For example, while longer tests can
increase validity because they capture
more measurement data they may be
impractical to administer. In addition, an
overly long exam could induce fatigue in
candidates, which in turn, could introduce
error into the measurements.
