Wiki Training

Presented by: Shauna Sanders, Media Specialist, Roan Elementary

What’s a wiki?
• First of all, watch this video created by Common Craft. It’s called, Wikis in
Plain English
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dnL00TdmLY
• Read this blog entry that covers what a wiki was designed to be used for, but
how it has evolved into being used for whatever purpose it’s needed for
http://incrediblydull.blogspot.com/2008/08/purpose-ofwikis.html

How’s a wiki going to help me?

• Save time by collaborating with colleagues and sharing ideas for lessons
online
EXAMPLE: http://roandesignteam.pbworks.com/
• Organize all your materials for a lesson (documents, websites, photos, online
games/practice, etc.)
EXAMPLE: http://roanmediacenter.pbworks.com/
• Stay in touch with new 21st century tools
EXAMPLE: www.wikipedia.com
• Personal Use

How do I use a wiki?

1. Sign up for an account. (www.pbworks.com)
2. Verify account registration through email and click on provided link.
3. Choose HOME tab and create a workspace.
4. Choose Basic, unless you desire to pay for it.
5. Create your address name.
http:// .pbworks.com
6. Continue through the given steps and then you will arrive at your very first
workspace.
7. The cool thing about this particular wiki site…they will take you through a 7-
day training by sending you one email a day with a different tutorial each
time.
8. There are LOTS of things to add to your workspace and many different ways
of adding them. This next part will show you the most used items/ways of
adding things to your workspace.
9. Remember from the video, in order to add anything to your workspace, you
need to click EDIT and then SAVE.
Adding different items to your workspace:

Video: Click on the Insert button, choose HTML/JavaScript and a window will pop
open. Paste the embed code from your desired video. Then, click Next and Insert
plug-in.
Images: On the right hand side of the page you will see Images and files in a gray
area. Click on it. From here, you can upload an image. Then, just click on the
image while in edit mode and it will be added to your workspace.

Links: Highlight the words that you want connected to the link and then choose
Add Link from the edit toolbar. Then, click on Browse Pages & Files. From here,
you can choose to create the link to another website, to an email address, or to
another page that you can create within your wiki. *For example, your first page
might just be a table of contents and then you could create links to other pages
listed in the table.

Documents: Documents can be uploaded just like images OR you can visit one of
these sites and upload documents to these sites. Then, you can embed them into
your workspace.
www.scribd.com (for any kind of document)
www.slideshare.com (for things like PowerPoint presentations)

How to use embedding codes…

Go to your video and look for something to do with embedding or an embed code.
On teachertube, it’s usually located on the right hand side. Simply copy it and then
go back to your workspace and follow the directions for adding video above. Make
sure you click save and then you will be able to see your embedded video on your
workspace.
