Card Module Upgrade

This document provides instructions for upgrading the firmware on Transition Networks media converter cards using either TFTP or a direct serial connection. The user connects to the management card via Telnet or a null modem cable and enters superuser mode. They can then use the TFTPGET command to download new firmware from a TFTP server or the SICXR command to transfer firmware via Xmodem protocol through a direct serial connection. Once the firmware is on the management card, the SICUPG command upgrades a specific card by slot number. Status messages confirm the upgrade process and restart.

Transition Networks Point System Media Converter Card

Module Firmware Upgrade via TFTP Telnet or Local Direct DB-9

The user can use Telnet session for TFTP upgrade or HyperTerminal COM port session for either TFTP or direct DB-9
transfer.

For HyperTerminal Connect to serial port on the management card with Null Modem Cable
(Note: For quickest upgrade time connect at 38400bps)

Once in HyperTerminal/or telnet the user must be in Superuser mode to upgrade management module.

Cpsmm100> SU=<xxxxxxx> (where xxxxxxx is the password. Note: Transition Networks ships its products
with a word "private" as default password)

Retrieve the upgrade firmware file. The user has two ways to retrieve BIN file

Option I. TFTP
Option II. Direct transfer of Firmware upgrade

OPTION I

Module Upgrade via TFTP

(Note: TFTP connection must be enabled on the router/gateway to allow for connection to Transition Network's TFTP
server)

Use "tftpget" command to initiate the process of downloading the code to the management module

[SU] cpsmm100> tftpget=xxxxxxxxxx.BIN

(example: [SU] cpsmm100> tftpget=CPSVT100AC.BIN for High Speed Serial upgrade to Rev. C)

Use "sicupg" command to initiate upgrade to a card (file is transferred from the management card to the card itself)

[SU] cpsmm100> sicupg=xxxx,y (where xxxx is the chassis' serial number and y is the slot number of the
card)

(example: [SU] cpsmm100> sicupg=6421,3 (where 6421 is the chassis' serial number and 3 is the slot
number of the card)

The following message will then appear (the beginning of upgrade process):

UPGRADE: Upgrade order sent. Waiting for device to respond.

If device never responds, it may not support field upgrade.
05:21:44:13 [su] CPSMM100-200>

I2C-I: Firmware upgrade of device s/n=7 is now 0% complete.

This command initiates a firmware upgrade for the primary CPU in the current base Management Module.

The card will restart itself upon its successful upgrade.

OPTION II.

Firmware upgrade via Direct Serial connection DB-9

Save xxxxxxxxxx.BIN file to local Drive (example c:\…. )

For HyperTerminal Connect to serial port on the management card with Null Modem Cable
(Note: For quickest upgrade time connect at 38400bps)

The user must be in Superuser mode to upgrade management module

Cpsmm100> SU=<private community name> [Note: Default is ‘private’]

Use "sicxr" command to initiate the process of downloading the code to the management module

[SU] cpsmm100> sicxr

This command initiates a firmware upgrade file transfer to the management card. The user will need to send the .bin
file using Xmodem/CRC.

From the upper menu in the Hyper Terminal select TRANSFER then SEND FILE. Select XMODEM in the protocol
dropdown menu and browse to the previously saved xxxxxxxxxx.BIN on your local drive.
