UTILIZATION OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY
Elcetrical and Electronics Engineering)
‘Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 75
Answer any Five Questions
All Questions Carry Equal Marks
1a) Explain in detail about load equalization.
b) A 200 V, 20 TEP (metric) dic shunt motor has field and armature resistances of
100 © and 0250 respectively Calculate the resistance 10 he inserted in the
armature circuit to reduce the speed to 75%, assuming the motor efficiency at full
load to be 90%. (i) When torque is to remain constant (ii) when torque
proportional to the square of speed. [6+9]
2a) Describe the construction and the principle of working of Ajax Wyatt furnace.
b) AAS KW, 3-ph, 400V resistance oven is star-connected. Heating, element used is
nickel-chrome strip 0,3 mm thick. If the wire temperature is to be 1000°C and that
of the charge is to be 700°C, estimate a suitable width and length of the wite
required. Take cmissivity = 0.62, specific resistance of nickel: 10%
ohm-m. [8+7]
3.a) Discuss the principle of arc welding and the difference between carbon and
metallic are welding and their relative merits,
b) Explain the principle of operution and constructional details of welding
transformer? [78]
4.a) Why itis economical to use few large sources of light mounted high for industrial
use than many sources of low output?
b) What are the polar curves as applied to light sources? Show how these curves are
used for finding out mean horizontal candle power and mean spherical candle
power. [78]
5.a) With help of the circuit diagrams, explain the working of the following light
sources,
i) High pressure mercury vapour lamps_ ii) Fluorescent tube
b) What are the usual values of power factors for the above lamps? Indicate the
systems of illumination where = above ~— lamps_-—are_—_used.
[8+7]
6.a) What are the advantages and disadvantages of electric traction?
b) Explain different types of electric braking applied to dc Series motor with neat
sketches. [748]Ta)
b)
8a)
b)
Define crest speed, average speed and scheduled speed and discuss the factors
which effet the scheduled speed of a train
Sketch neatly two typical speed-time curves (i) for suburban, and (ii) for main line
railway service assuming level track herween their two stations [748]
Define the term “coefficient of adhesion” and explain the factors on which it
depends.
An clectric train has an average speed of 4Skm ph on a level track between stops
1,800 m apart. It is accelerated at 2km phps and brakes are applied at 3 km phps.
Draw the speed time curve for this run, Fistimate the energy consumption at the
axles of the train per tonne-km. Take tractive resistance constant at 1S NW per
tone and allow 9% for rotational imei. [o+9]
