CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

4
1.1 BACKGROUND

The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) was

established by the industrial trust fund (ITF) in 1973 with the aim of
exposing students to machines and ways to safeguarding the work areas
and workers in the industries, offices, laboratories, hospitals and other
organization. The main reason behind the embankment of students in
SIWES was to expose them to the industrial environment and enable
them to develop occupational competencies so that they can readily
contribute their quota to national economic and technological
development after graduation.

The major benefit to students who partake in the SIWES are the skills
and competencies acquired. The relevant production skills remain a part
of the recipients of industrial training as life-long assets which cannot be
taken away from them. This is because the knowledge and skills
acquired through training are internalized and become relevant when
required to perform jobs.

THE GOVERNING COUNCIL OF THE FUND

A Governing Council of thirteen members drawn from the public and

private sectors will be appointed by the Federal Government to manage the
Fund. This is to reflect the co-operative spirit of the enterprise, the need
for private employers, organized labor, and the providers and users of
5
training to co-operate in identifying training needs and devising policy and
system.

As part of its responsibilities, the ITF provide Direct Training, Vocational

and Apprentice Training, Research and Consultancy Service,
Reimbursement to up to 50% Levy paid by employers of labor registered
with it, and administers the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme
(SIWES). It also provides human resources development information and
training technology service to industry and commerce to enhance their
manpower capacity and in- house training delivery effort.

1.2 OBJECTIVES

The Industrial training funds policy of 1973 which established

SIWES outlined the objectives of the scheme.

The objectives are to:

I. Provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical

knowledge in real work situation, thereby bridging the gap
between university work and actual practice.

II. Prepare students for work situations they are likely to face after
graduation

6
III. Enables students to work and know methods and techniques in
handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in the
university.

IV. Provides an avenue for students in higher institutions of

learning to acquire industrial skills and experience during their
course of study.

V. Make transition from university to the world of work easier and

thus enhance contest for later job placement.

ATTIVITIES AT A PLACE OF ATTACHMENT

14
From the very first week of my attachment at the kosefe local council, I was, along with other I.T
students, taught the basics about data management and how it is to be maintained, as that would
be pivotal in understanding much of the work that would later be done.

Website Management

WordPress is one of the most popular blogging tools on the web, it

makes easy for anybody to post their ideas, pictures and audio/video.
WordPress is used for not only blogging posts but also to store static

19
information that can be easily updated like a content management
system (CMS).

One of the most advantages of WordPress I learnt is the use of

themes and plugins which can dramatically change the look and
functionality of the entire website.

WordPress Themes: A theme or skin is a present package containing

additional or changed graphical appearance details, achieved by the use
of a graphical user interface (GUI) that can be applied to specific
software and websites to suit the purpose, topic, or tastes of different
users to customize the look and feel of a piece of computer software or
an operating system front-end GUI (and window managers)..

What can themes do?

Themes take the content and data stored by WordPress and display it in
the browser. When you create a WordPress theme, you decide how that
content looks and is displayed. There are many options available to you
when building your theme. For example:

 Your theme can have different layouts, such as static or responsive,

using one column or two.
 Your theme can display content anywhere you want it to be
displayed.

20
 Your theme can specify which devices or actions make your
content visible.
 Your theme can customize its typography and design elements
using CSS.
 Other design elements like images and videos can be included
anywhere in your theme.
WordPress themes are incredibly powerful. But, as with every web
design project, a theme is more than color and layout. Good themes
improve engagement with your website’s content in addition to being
beautiful.
Required files

There are only two files absolutely required in a WordPress theme:

1. index.php – the main template file
2. style.css – the main style file

WordPress Plugin: A WordPress Plugin is a program, or a set of one or

more functions, written in the PHP scripting language, that adds a
specific set of features or services to the WordPress site, which can be
seamlessly integrated with the site using access points and methods
provided by the WordPress Plugin Application Program Interface (API).

Applications support plug-ins for many reasons. Some of the main

reasons include:

21
 to enable third-party developers to create abilities which extend an
application

 to support easily adding new features

 to reduce the size of an application

 to separate source code from an application because of

incompatible software license.
What is the difference between a theme and a plugin?

It is common to find cross-over between features found in themes and

plugins. However, best practices are:

 a theme controls the presentation of content; whereas

 a plugin is used to control the behaviour and features of your
WordPress site.
Any theme you create should not add critical functionality. Doing so
means that when a user changes their theme, they lose access to that
functionality. For example, say you build a theme with a portfolio
feature. Users who build their portfolio with your feature will lose it
when they change themes.
By moving critical features to plugins, you make it possible for the
design of your website to change, while the functionality remains the
same.

22
GETTING STARTED WITH WORDPRESS

Starting website with WordPress is really easy. There are several

things you should consider when starting WordPress:

1. Hosting – we should not just go after any host, but look for a
quality provider that understands the needs and the dynamics of
this software and charges reasonable fees.
2. Installation
 Download the latest version of WordPress from
wordPress.org.
 upload those files to your web server, using FTP
 Create a MySQL database and user for WordPress.
 Configure WordPress to connect to the newly-created
database.
 Complete the installation and setup your new website.
3. Themes and
4. Management of content.

23
CHAPTER FOUR
EXPERIENCE GAINED

I gained a great deal of experience during my training period.

24
More than anything I learnt during my training, I would love to elaborate
on my web developing skills which has been enhanced and increased
during this period of time. I learnt how to do mail campaign using mail-
chimp, twitter campaign.

I help them in creating staff's record databases for those due for
promotion and also managing and troubleshooting their computer
systems. I learnt how to design the letter head of the departmentand how
to record files using the indexes numerically /alphabetically and also
how to locate files according to the previously specified order. I also
assisted in dispatching mails to several departments and posting of
memos.

After all the work done during the course of training which lasted for 6
months / 24 weeks, I have increased in various forms of knowledge and
skills which are listed below:

1. Increase on how to make a business/corporate website.

2. Knowledge on graphic design software.

3. Knowledge on how to add item, edit item and delete item using
QuickBooks.

4. Mail dispatch

5. Creation of letter heads.

25
6. Increased Efficiency in reporting skills

7. Socialization

8. Neatness throughout the course of my work

9. Effective Work Discipline

10. Practice of regular and specific Computer Applications.

11. Punctuality to place of work

26
CHAPTER 5
SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

27
To end my write up I will like to say that the student industry
experience scheme (SIWES) has been of tremendous help to me in my
career path. It has improved both my theoretical and practical know-how
in my chosen profession. Getting the opportunity to practice things I
have learnt in school has really open my thoughts on how to face
challenges posed to me in the course of the program. It has made me
understand how to create website, make use of different themes for
different type of website, and also how to setup wampserver
(wampserver is an application that allow WordPress to be use offline.),
how to make use of theme and plugin in WordPress. Experience were
also gained on how to make use Corel-draw and photo-shop.

The SIWES programme should be encourage has this will be of

immense help and contribution to the technical knowledge and
improvement to the Nigerian youth. It also gets us developed mentally
and in all spheres to face the challenges of the real world after
graduating.

Another point to be made is that the bodies responsible for this

exercise like the industrial training fund(I.T.F) etc.., should be
encouraged to pay students their allowance at when due this will
encourage students to embark on the course with all diligent and
seriousness as some students don’t get paid a dime by the employers
during the course of this SIWES programme, hence seek for other

28
avenues which may be outside their profession to empower themselves
financially.

The major problem I encountered during the course of the SIWES

program was the problem of transportation. It was difficult for me to get
to the office early every day not neglecting the transport queues and
hefty traffic.

Also there was no supervision from the ITF office which I so expected,
and eagerly awaited. This made me feel like the ITF could not account
for me despite the submission of my SIWES Form 8 and the signing of
my logbook.

Finally, the federal government (Federal ministry of commerce and

industry) should help in establishing factories, offices, training grounds
etc. to enable students have their training in relevant field has it concerns
their discipline. Scholarships should also be made available to best
student trainees to encourage students to put in their best in the course of
the program.

Marketing is carried out with the intent of reaching out to a maximum

number of people in exchange of minimum cost. When Internet was
still in its formative years, marketing people used to depend on
traditional media such as television, radio, handbills, billboards,
newspapers, and magazines.
29
Today, the Internet is premium source for promoting your business.
There has been a rapid rise in the number of internet users since last few
years. Thus Internet is the lucrative place to promote the business.

Market Research
Business organizations need to set clear objectives and strong market
understanding. To research the market, you can −

 Review your website traffic.

 Review the Ad conversion rates.

 Review the queries asked by your existing customers.

 Identify the customers’ pain points that they post on various

platforms such as yahoo answers, blogs, social media, and other
sites.

 Anticipate and compile a list of Frequently Asked Questions

(FAQs) with their clear answers and align them to customers’ pain
points.

 Include the fact sheet about product if required.
