Unit I

1. A balance three phase load consists of three coils, each of resistance 8ohm and inductive reactance
of 10 ohm. Determine the line current and power absorbed when the coils are star connected, delta
connected across 400V, 3 phase supply. (8 marks)
2. An unbalanced four wire star connected load has a balanced voltage of 400V, the loads are
Z1=(4+j8)Ω, Z2=(3+j4) and Z3=(15+j20)Ω. Calculate the (i) Line currents (ii) Currents in the neutral

3. Obtain expression for power and power factor for three phase AC delta connected balanced load
circuit.
4. A delta connected balanced load is supplied from 3 phase 400V supply. The line current is 20 A, total

power taken by load is 10,000. Examine the impedance in each branch, the phase current, power
factor and total power consumption.

4. A 250/500V transformer gave the following test results: S.C. Test with low voltage winding short
circuited: 20V, 12A, 100W O.C. Test: 250V, 1A, 80W on low voltage side. Determine the circuit

constants and draw the equivalent circuit. Also determine the efficiency when the output is 10A at
500V and 0.8pf lagging.
5. Draw the phasor diagram of the transformer under (i) Resistive load (ii) capacitive load (iii)
Inductive load
6. Drive the condition for maximum efficiency in the transformer. (8 marks)
7. A 30KVA, 2000/200V, 1Φ, 50Hz transformer has a pry resistance of 3.5Ω & reactance 4.5Ω. The
Secondary resistance & reactance are 0.015Ω & 0.02Ω respectively. Find equivalent resistance,
reactance and impedance i) referred to primary ii) referred to Secondary. (8 marks)
8. What is meant by auto transformer? Explain the principle, construction, working of an auto
transformer. (8 marks)
Unit III
1. Describe with a neat diagram the principle of operation and constructional features of DC
machines.
2. With neat diagram explain in detail. (i) Armature Reaction (ii) Commutation in DC machines.
3. Draw the different characteristics of DC machine and explain them in detail.
4. Explain the construction, working principle, characteristics and applications of Universal motor with
relevant diagrams. How can an universal motor be reversed?
5. (i) Describe the construction and principle of operation of a DC generator with a neat diagram. (ii)
Derive the emf equation of DC generator.
6. Draw and explain the no-load and load characteristics of DC shunt, series and compound generators.
7. What are the various starting method of DC motor? Explain any one method (3 point or 4 point
starter). (8 marks)
8. (i) With neat schematic, explain the following methods for speed control of DC shunt motor (a)
Armature Control Method (b) Field Control Method (8 marks)

1. Explain the construction and working of types of single phase induction motor. Explain why the single
phase induction motors are not self-starting?
2. (i) Show that the starting torque of a synchronous motor is zero. (ii) Discuss in detail the phenomenon
of ‘hunting’ in a synchronous machine. How is it remedied?
3. With a neat diagram describe the working principle of Brushless DC motor.
