Digital Assignment-1 Mee-6060 Bio-Mechatronics: G.Rama Akhil 18MMT1009

The document discusses biological-machine systems integration (BMSI) and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). BMSI aims to replace or interface with neural elements in the nervous system, bringing together neuroscientists and designers. It allows for neural interfaces using stimulating or recording electrodes. The goal is feedback control, such as controlling a prosthetic arm. BCIs provide new output channels for the brain using brain activity readings, enabling communication and control. Long-term challenges include direct brain-to-brain contact allowing new communication modes but risking replacement of individual mental lives. Medium-term challenges are practical rather than existential. Current decisions on bioethics are important as the future is hard to anticipate accurately.

DIGITAL ASSIGNMENT-1

MEE-6060 BIO-MECHATRONICS

Summary
Biological–Machine Systems Integration(BMSI):
In this the main aim of BMSI from a medical view is to effectively replace or facilitate
activation of, or recording from, neural elements in a part of the nervous system. It brings
together designers and neuroscientists. On one hand, to comprehend the working of the
apprehensive framework, and other to interface machines and sensory system to treat
neurological infection.
The role of BMSI is to give neural interfaces for both tactile and incitation(neurostimulation)
purposes. The progresses in BMSI for control and movement in the space of neural and
restoration designing, the inspiration being to improve the personal satisfaction of those
seriously incapacitated or experiencing significant misfortunes to different sense organs.
Firstly, we can utilize invigorating electrodes to interface with sensitive tissue to electrically
bring out possibilities in the tissue and either to restore sensory experiences to the implant
recipient and control an effector organ such as a group of muscles. Secondly, we may use
recording electrodes to map and understand (with appropriate bio signal processing. In both
cases the electrodes or interfaces used can be invasive or non-invasive. The goal of BMSI is
to perform both the above functions in a feedback control loop. This feedback is the crucial
element if we wish to be able to manage and control bio robotic or in situ biological
processes. As an example, take the control of a prosthetic arm, visual prosthesis etc.

Summary
Brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) provide brain with new output channels that depend on
brain activity rather than on peripheral nerves and muscles. BCIs for example provide
communication and control, in which the user's intent is decoded from electrophysiological
measures of brain activity. The brain activity might be recorded noninvasively by sensors on
the scalp or invasively by electrodes placed on the brain surface or within the brain.
Long term challenges: For direct brain-to-brain contact, this would enable new modes of
communication but also lead to the possible replacement of individual mental lives by a
network in which individual brains and , prosthetics such as artificial hips or heart valves can
replace failing bodily structures.
Medium term challenges: mainly free of the existential and metaphysical dimensions just
discussed, such as ceding dominion of the earth to others, merging our identities into a global
network, or questioning the meaning and value of being human.
However, there is only one opportunity to get current decisions r and that is how, another
reason is that bioethical decisions depend not only on values and principles, but also on the
facts of the matter, which we have limited ability to anticipate in the distant future.
