Unit: Math Lesson Topic: Measurement – Day 2 of Tipi project

Unit Goals:
1. Have an actual activity for each lesson with new teaching strategies --- measurement in classroom
2. Tie together the curriculum and practical life knowledge to make the unit meaningful --- measuring at home vs. for our lesson worksheet
3. Have fun, meaningful lessons in an attempt to minimize behavioral defiance- give them a reason to want to be good! ---fun to get to move around and
activity participate in learning
4. As higher-level thinking questions/ critical inquiry --- let students problem solve our shortage of same length shoe for measuring the carpet
5. Establish an assessment system to make evaluation of learning objectives transparent and achievable (begin with the end in mind) --- worksheet and pp state
our objective/goal for the day
6. Log it in my portfolio --- will take pictures
Objectives (I Can statements):
-I can measure an object in standard and nonstandard units and show my understanding of their relationship (Gr.2/3)
-I can measure length (cm, m) (select referents, model, describe, estimate, measure and record)
Procedure
First 30min period
Centers
Build: measuring things in our classroom using ruler - need a worksheet
U & me: booklet with teacher (to be completed that day) on standard measurement (TEACHER walks student through worksheet. Answer key on the back of
worksheet).
Interactive: mathletics (measurement)
Literacy: word problem worksheet with Mrs. Kerner
Deck or Dice game: Build a Tower Use Lego, pennies, wooden blocks, popsicle sticks or any basic building material you can find. Have players roll a pair of
dice and add the two numbers. The player gets that number in building materials if the dice are added correctly and uses them to build a tower. Go through 10
or 15 rounds. The player with the tallest or most creative tower at the end wins. Instead of rolling dice, you may create a general math board and include a
problem on each square.
Materials: 8 dice, building cubes--- work on carpet or at table in hallway
Second 30min period
1. Present our supplies on table and go through steps the group needs to go through (5 min)
SAY Today we are not building the tipis… we are laying the groundwork first! If we get our measurements done fast enough, we can paint them
(!!!)
First things first. When you get in your groups, you will get a worksheet that has 5 steps. Those 5 steps need to be completed today as a group.
Step 5 is only if you have enough time left.
Step 1: one person from your group can come to the counter and gather the supplies you need (9 skewers, 4 tooth picks, one shower curtain)
Step 2: you need to pick your best cutter in the group to cut out the outline of the tipi cloth from the shower curtain. You have to cut it show,
steady and straight, otherwise the edges will be choppy.
Step 3: using a ruler, you need to measure the length of your skewers (in what??? *wait* cm), the length of your tooth picks (cm)
Step 4: measure the length (show diagram) and width of your tipi cloth.
All these steps must be filled out on your worksheets before you can colour. After the teacher has checked, you will put your papers in your
duotangs. Only then will me or Mrs. Kerner give you colour pastels.
2. Assign groups and let them work (20 min)

3. Clean up (5 min)
Tomorrow… we will construct our tipis! By measuring and gathering our supplies today, we leave room for mistakes or mishaps tomorrow when
you put our tipis together. We also want to give your cloths time to dry (if they didn’t get to coloring it, they can do it during indoor recess if they
want).
