Calculus Derivatives of Trigonometric Functions

The following table gives the derivatives of the trigonometric functions.

f (x) sin q cos q tan q csc q sec q cot q

f ' (x) cos q dq -sin q dq sec q dq -csc q cot q dq sec q tan q dq -csc2 q dq
2

Note: dq means the derivative of the argument of the trigonometric function

Examples:

a) f (x) = sin (2x) f ' (x) = cos (2x) • 2

= 2 cos (2x)

b) g (x) = cos (3x2) g ' (x) = - sin (3x2) • 6x

= - 6x sin (3x2)

c) h(x) = csc (x3 + x) h ' (x) = - csc (x3 + x) cot (x3 + x) • (3x2 + 1)
= - (3x2 + 1) csc (x3 + x) cot (x3 + x)

Exercises Find the derivative of each of the following functions.

c) y = 4 sin (-2x2 - 3) d) y = -½ cos (4 + 2x)
e) y = sin x2 f) y = -cos x2
g) y = sin-2(x3) h) y = cos (x2 - 2)2
i) y = 3 sin4(2 - x)-1 j) y = x cos x
k) y = x / (sin x) l) y = (sin x) / (1 + cos x)
m) y = (1 + cos2 x)6 n) y = sin (1/x)
o) y = sin (cos x) p) y = cos3 (sin x)
q) y = x cos (1/x) r) y = (sin2 x)/(cos x)
s) y = (1 + sin x)/(1 - sin 2x) t) y = sin3 x + cos3 x
