Machine Project

The document outlines a research proposal on predicting Philippine election results using Twitter sentiment analysis. It discusses using tweets as data for sentiment analysis to measure voter sentiment toward candidates and predict election outcomes. The goal is to help voters make informed choices by showing sentiment graphs, and to eventually benefit communities by electing leaders focused on good governance rather than self-interest. Key aspects include identifying positive and negative remarks on Twitter to see which candidates are favored, and measuring sentiment frequencies toward each candidate.

Abstract:

Twitter is a social media platform which allows user to interact with other users by creating short
messages called tweets, it can be retweeted and shared to the World Wide Web. Twitter is one of the
most widely used platform in today’s age, with over 10.2 million active monthly users in the Philippines
alone, it is recognized as a very good source of information about the latest trends, news and issues in
the society. People use twitter to share the latest happenings in their life and to voice out their opinions
or sentiments about a certain issue and one good example is about politics. Twitter users create tweets
to give their view upon a candidate in the election, it can either be positive or negative. The tweets content
can be considered as a valid indicator of political sentiment. Utilizing only 280 characters or less per tweet
is a very good characteristic which makes the data from twitter ideal for sentiment analysis. Sentiment
analysis is known as Opinion Mining, a field in Natural Language Processing (NLP) that aims to identify and
extract opinions within a text. The researchers objectives is to predict the outcome of the election by
measuring the polarity of sentiments whether a tweet is positive or negative, and also to measure the
frequency of positive and negative tweets towards the subject or the candidate and comparing it among
the other candidates.

Index Terms—Natural Language Processing, Opinion Mining, Sentiment Analysis.

Introduction

The Philippines is a democratic country which performs election where people have a say on what
kind of government will safeguard the nation’s best interest. The outcome of the election will greatly
impact every sector of the nation including the communities and every citizen it governs. Electing the right
leaders will result to the best governance of the country, however, electing the opposite will delay the
growth of the country. Electing the right, capable and quailed leader is a problem in the Philippines,
majority of people vote based on popularity, charisma, promises, and other non-leader quality instead of
looking for the educational background, qualities, platforms and sincerity of the candidates.

One of the goal of the United Nations for 2030 is to have a sustainable cities and communities.

community and cities magbebenefit.

Great leadership, not self-interest and self-gained leadership will be needed in developing the country. It
will bring prosperity.
