Business Communication Assignment

This case study examines a conflict that arose between the author and a fellow employee due to cultural and language barriers. As an English-speaking business graduate from Karachi, the author was preferred for meetings and tasks over their Sindhi mechanical engineer colleague. This neglect led the colleague to start coming in late and have declining performance. The author resolved the conflict by identifying differences in their cultures, acknowledging biases, and finding a mutually agreeable solution that respected both of their specialized skills and benefited their careers and the company. While successful in this case, more examples would be needed to generalize this approach to conflict resolution.

ABSTRACT:
Culture and language is frequently observed as the key inhibitor of compelling learning sharing.
An organization where sharing learning is incorporated with the way of life discovered that they
didn't change their way of life to coordinate their insight administration activities. Adjustment to
deal with learning administration to accommodate their way of life. Connecting sharing learning
to taking care of down to earth business issues; binds sharing information to a pre‐existing center
esteem; presenting learning administration in a way that coordinates the association's style;
expanding on existing systems individuals use in their everyday work; and urging companions and
directors to apply strain to share.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
How to overcome cultural barrier between one of my fellow management trainee who was from
interior Sindh and an engineer where as I am a business graduate born and lived in Karachi.

CONTEXT BUILDING:
My colleague graduated from Mehran University as a mechanical engineer and I graduated from
University of Karachi as a business graduate. Due to my fluent English vocabulary and speaking
skills our supervisor preferred me most of the time to different corporate meetings despite the
fact neglecting my other co worker as his background didn’t match mostly with the corporate
sector and his speaking skills weren’t the most fluent. I was getting to write most of the email
drafts that were directly coordinated to the managing director of the company. I was being called
upon most of the time by my supervisor in different discussions related to company’s future
investments and corporate affairs.
Being a part of corporate communications department you need to have a good inter personal
skills and bit of confidence to indulge in the society. Looking after the company’s CSR programs
and other corporate social affairs requires good speaking skills and writing skills so that our
presentation could satisfy our clients.

OBSERVABLE BEHAVIOURS:
All these things combined and being neglected most of the time made my collegue against me
and my supervisor and he started coming late to the office and his performance downgraded by
time. He didn’t speak to me much as he used to. Didn’t respond to my emails or calls neither
made any interaction during office hours or after office hours. As he belonged to a sindhi
background family there was tad bit of ego factor as well. On a professional as well as personal
level I tried to console the problem between us through various factors.
Being a part of Pakistan Petroleum Ltd which is basically a home of cultural diversity cultural
and language barriers play a vital challenging role in your managing role.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
1- What factors effect cross cultural barriers.
2- What are barriers of communication
3- Does leadership plays part in cross cultural differences.

CULTURE AND LANGUAGE

GENDER

LEADERSHIP STYLE

METHODOLOGY:
Successful conflict resolution comprises three aspects:

1. Desire and necessity for the conflict to be resolved

2. Understanding of possible barriers to the resolution of the conflict
3. The choice of method of conflict resolution.

To resolve this matter I personally went to talk to him about all the possible events that had happened
between us in the recent past and I wanted to know all the grudges that he holds for me so that we both
can understand eachothers perspective.

Following factors helped me in resolving this matter.

 Identify the comparability and contrasts between your social practice and those of the individual
in struggle with you

 Acknowledge the distinctions and endeavor to adjust the interests of the two gatherings.

 Examining your own qualities

 Acknowledging your own social stereotyping or predisposition

 Looking for the opportune time to manage clashes.

 You must assume prime liability for investigating the obstructions and limiting this protection
from compromise.
 Acknowledging your very own social stereotyping or predisposition

RESULT:

Colleagues may feel feeble. Such emotions may go about as a power of opposition in the compromise
procedure. One approach to break the power structure is to regard colleague as specialists in their very own
conditions. Power contrasts likewise exist between laborers, because of rank: The center ought to be
coordinated to the reason for struggle rather than status of the position. As a result my colleague was
satisfied with the position and we agreed to the terms of our own specializing abilities and work accordingly
so that it benefits us in our professional career as well as it remains beneficial for the company as well.

LIMITATIONS:

As this was a contextual case study, it was just actualized on one individual. To finish up it as a practical
alternative for compromise, this approach might be executed on more such people to expand its
generalizability.
