About the Institute:
The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad was established by the Government of India in 1926
on the pattern of Royal School of Mines, London to teach Mining Engineering and Applied Geology to provide manpower for
the Indian Mineral Industry and the concerned departments of the Government. Subsequently in 1957, Petroleum
Engineering and Applied Geophysics disciplines were also added. In due recognition of its vital role in the service of the
mineral exploration and mining sectors of the national economy, IIT(ISM) was granted autonomy by the Government of India
in 1967; and has been functioning as a Deemed University under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. In 1996, it
came under financial and administrative control of MHRD, Government of India. Subsequently in the year, 2016, Govt. of
India notified Vide S.O.2870(E) of No.2173, Part II Section 3 – Sub section (ii) of the Gazette of India dated 6th September
2016, the Indian School of Mines Dhanbad was declared as Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines),
Dhanbad. It has a fully residential campus consisting of graceful blend of old and new style buildings. The serene campus
comprises academic buildings, separate hostels for boys and girls, faculty & staff quarters, health centre, workshop, Student
Activity Centre (SAC), canteen and other infrastructural facilities for its cosmopolitan community. The Institute is situated
about 3 km north of Dhanbad Railway Station on the Grand Chord of Eastern Railway. IIT(ISM) being situated at the core of
the industrial base of the region covering mines, steel plants, fertilizer plants, refractories, heavy machine building plants etc.
derives locational advantage in learning and teaching process in terms of keeping abreast with changing technology in the
industry.

Academic Structure:
Departments and Academic Programmes
IIT(ISM) offers B.Tech programmes in 13 disciplines, viz. Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mining Machinery
Engineering, Mineral Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering,
Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering,
Civil Engineering, Chemical engineering and Engineering Physics; in addition, five year dual degree programme in
Computer Science and Engineering. It also offers five year integrated M.Tech in Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics and
Mathematics & Computing. IIT(ISM) has been offering, since 1972, a number of industry-oriented M.Tech. Programmes. The
Ph.D. Programmes in Engineering, Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences and Management also attract many
postgraduate students from across the country and abroad. The Institute also offers 3 year M.Sc. Tech Programmes in
Applied Geology and Applied Geophysics, 2 year M.Sc. Programmes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics & Computing,
through a separate All India Competitive Examination. A 2 year M.B.A. Programme is also offered where the admission is
based on combined scores of CAT and personal interview/ group discussion of candidates. Department of Mining
Engineering has been granted the status of Centre for Advance Studies (CAS) in Mine Safety and Management and also a
Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) Centre for higher studies (M.Tech. and Ph.D) by University Grant Commission.
R&D Activities and Technical Collaboration
IIT(ISM), in its various departments, is currently doing R&D and Industries sponsored projects worth more than Rs 124.00
corers sponsored by various organisations. The Institute has signed MOU for technical collaboration with CSIR laboratories,
McNally Bharat Engineering. Co. Ltd, MTI (SAIL), Deptt. of Atomic Energy, GOI, BHP Billiton (Australia), CSIRO(Australia),
Safety in Mines, Testing & Research Station(SIMTARS, Australia), Bosch Rexroth AG Germany etc. The Institute has signed
MOUs with 25 Universities spread across the globe such as Politecnico di Torino(Italy), Arkansas State University (USA), TU
Clausthal (Germany), National United University (Taiwan),Curtin University of Technology(Australia), University of
Queensland (Australia), University of New South Wales(Australia), University of South Florida(USA), Politecnica De
Universidade De Sao Palo(Brazil), University of Free State(South Africa), University of Western Cape(South Africa) Texas
Tech University(USA), Laurentian University(Canada), Perm National Research Poytechnic University (PNRPU), Perm,
University of WINDSOR(Canada), All Nations University(Ghana), University of Osijek(Croatia),Institute of Geonics(Czech
Republic) and others. The Institute enjoys nine posts of Chair Professors in different departments instituted by National
Mineral Development Corporation, Steel Authority of India Limited, Tata Steel, Coal India Limited (two), Uranium Corporation
India Limited, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Sandvik and Ministry of Labour and Employment. IIT(ISM) is actively

Rules For Change Branch:


Rules for Change of Branch of IIT JEE 2017 IIT(ISM)
Change of branch is an academic incentive to the students to perform well in the initial incubative year at the institution. It
also facilitates them to change their professional profile, having realized their inclination and potential once directly
exposed to the various options available. Change of branch will be considered at the end of second semester based on the
performance in the first and second semester examinations. Change of branch between B.Tech, Dual Degree and
Integrated programmes is permissible subject to the following conditions: (1) Students must not have passed any semester
through special examination or by repeating the semester. (2) Students must have obtained at least 7.5 GPA out of 10,
considering both first and second semesters. However, SC/ST and PD candidates with a minimum of 6.5 GPA out of 10
can apply for change of branch in their respective categories. Change of branch will be made strictly as per merit. In case
of a tie, it will be resolved by considering the JEE (Advanced) rank of the applicants. (3) While permitting change of branch
the strength of a branch should not exceed by more than 15% of the sanctioned strength of the receiving department or fall
below 50% of the sanctioned strength of the donor department. (4) Students who complete both first and second
semesters in all respects and obtain GPA above 9.00 considering both first and second semesters together and/or secure
rank within top 1% of the successful students (without special examination or repeating first or second semesters) of the
batch shall be allowed to change to the branch of their choice irrespective of conditions stipulated at (3). The eligibility
criteria as stipulated at (1) and (2) will however apply.

Geological Museum, a Seismological Observatory, an Experimental-cum-Training mine at No. 26 incline Godhur Colliery of
BCCL, and Longwall Training Gallery are unique instructional facilities. A state-of-the-art Central Research Facility housing
high-value advanced scientific equipments has been established.
Computing and Internet facility
IIT(ISM) has a state-of-the-art Computer Centre which supports campus wide Fibre Optic Network comprising of 7000
nodes that connect all the academic departments, central library, administrative departments, each room of hostels,
residences of faculties and officers. Internet access is provided to all the users through dedicated internet links and is
being augmented further. Computer Centre has a number of state-of-the-art servers, LINUX and WINDOWS Labs and
application softwares.Campus wide 4G wi-fi network for all valid users of the campus is being created.
Central Library
The Central Library of the Institute has rich collection of books, journals, conference proceedings, standards, reports,
theses and dissertations on all branches of engineering, applied sciences, earth science, social science, environmental
science and management. The library provides access to nearly 137,725 books and 40,360 bound volumes of journals,
more than 10,967 theses and dissertations and many conference proceedings, 14 national newspapers and 35 current
magazines. Different sections and services of library are automated with help of an Integrated Library Management
Software called “LIBSYS”. All records of the library are accessible on Web based Online Public Access Catalogue
(WEBOPAC) popularly known as internet catalogue, on the IIT(ISM) campus wide network as well as through internet. It
provides access to more than 14000 electronic journals. The library has 4 servers, 32 PCs and other accessories adequate
to cater to the needs of users. Four information KIOSK are meant for users to access OPAC data bases, e-books, e-
journals and other e-resources. The official website of the Central Library (http:// www.iitismlib.ac.in) provides access to 14
different data bases and e-journals viz Science Direct, AIP, APS, ACS, One Petro, ASME, ASCE,, IEL online, EBSCO,
ACM Digital Library, Nature, JCCC–INDEST and Springer Link. 6000 plus e-books have been also purchased. A new
Centrally Air-conditioned 8 storied library building is under construction.
Medical Facility
Medical facilities as available at Health Centre of the Institute are provided to all students during their period of study at
IIT(ISM). The Health Centre is well staffed and equipped with facilities for treatment of outdoor patients. The services of
specialist visiting doctors are also available on regular basis. Important hospitals in the country have been tied up for
providing medical assistance and treatment in emergency.

Financial Assistance:
Financial Assistance/Scholarships
IIT (ISM) provides financial assistance / scholarship to a large number of students covering almost 40% of the student
strength. Under IIT (ISM) merit – cum- means scholarship, the Institute provides scholarship to 25% of the students on roll
that includes tuition fee reimbursement in full apart from financial assistance @ Rs. 1000/- per month. Ten percent of the
students on roll are provided with only tuition fee reimbursement in full. Under New Central Sector Scholarship Scheme, 10
students of SC category are provided every year free boarding and lodging apart from grant-in-aid of Rs.45000/- for
purchase of computer in the first year. Under New Central Sector Scholarship Scheme, 05 student of ST category are
provided every year free boarding and lodging apart from grant-in-aid of Rs.45000/- for purchase of computer in the first
year. Besides, there are a host of scholarships sponsored by different State Governments and Public and Private corporate
sectors including endowment scholarships.

Training and Placement
The training and placement cell of the Institute, headed by a senior faculty member, maintains active association and
excellent contacts with industries and the corporate sectors to secure jobs in various organizations of the country and
abroad. The placement cell coordinates the placement activities to match the needs of the industry with the aspirations of
the students.
Industry And Alumni Relations:
IIT(ISM) is proud of its alumni. Traditionally, IIT(ISM) alumni are holding top positions in industries and government offices.
Graduates of this Institute are heading public and private sector companies and also holding key positions in the areas of
academics and research both in India and abroad (USA, Canada, Australia etc). IIT(ISM) PVS (ISMAA) is extremely active
and vibrant in meeting its objective of enabling the alumni to keep in touch with the Alma mater, to promote and foster spirit-
de-corps amongst the past and present students and the teachers of the Institute and to contribute towards furtherance of
science and technology through its seven national and one international chapters located respectively in Bhubaneshwar,
Dhanbad, Delhi, Ranchi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, and North America. IIT(ISM) PVS (ISMAA) actively promotes various
annual awards to students and teachers for academic/research excellence in IIT(ISM). The association also provides
international travel grants for students to present papers in various technical forums abroad.

The Institute has unique infrastructural facilities on campus for indoor/ outdoor games and sports. The upper and lower
grounds constitute beautiful arena for outdoor games and annual sports. The Sports Complex comprises infrastructure for
tennis, basketball, volleyball, and badminton. A Student Activity Centre equipped with a state-of-the-art gymnasium, yoga
centre, indoor sports facilities and Olympic size swimming pool provide ample facility for building and toning up of physical
and mental health. Srijan, the biggest cultural-management festival of Eastern India is organized by ISS body of students
every year which draws nationwide participation from different institutes. A number of student societies and hobby clubs
functioning on IIT(ISM) campus are the potential avenues to unleash students’ creativity and imagination in constructive
