Introduction To IP: Fuziana Rozalli Graham Melvin

This document provides an introduction to Interactive Petrophysics (IP) software. It outlines the objectives of covering key pieces of IP including running licenses, database construction, loading and viewing data, and the basics of a deterministic workflow. It also briefly mentions help resources available for IP and how to launch movies that provide tutorial demonstrations.

Introduction to IP

Fuziana Rozalli
Graham Melvin

University of Malaya
July 2016
Who are we?

• LR-Senergy’s software division is based in Banchory, Scotland

• Used by Petrophysicists, Geologists, Sedimentologists and many

other -ologists, -ercists and -onomists across the world

• There’s a module for most popular processing tasks...

• And us?
Today’s Objectives

• Introduce key pieces of IP

• Running IP & Licensing
• Database construction
• Loading / Viewing / Displaying
• Basics of a Deterministic Workflow in IP

• Perhaps a little Petrophysics (oh no!)

IP Help
We spend a lot of time writing it!

• Comprehensive ‘Help’ is available

• You’ll find it on the Main Menu and

then Browse to the desired section

• Or launch from the ‘Help’ button within

the modules (takes you to the right
section)
IP Tutorial Movies

• A series of Tutorials are

available on the Senergy
Software website

senergy.com/software/interactive-
petrophysics/videos
Launching IP

• IP can be launched by double click

• IP is licensed software: You need to connect to a license server

(Some IP address on your University network?)

1 2 3

or in Tools > IP Licensing > Install License

Open Database

• When IP is launched it will open the

Open Database dialogue

• Can select one to open from a list of

previously opened databases

• Can browse to an existing database

and open that one

• Can create a new database and use

that one

• Can also be launched from ‘File’ menu

IP Database Folder
What your database looks like in Windows Explorer

• The IP database is a collection of binary files.

• .dat
• Main data file for a well, contains well header information, all
curves, last parameters ran on a single well module, basic curve
history and default log plot for that well (Give this to a friend, they
have your well)

• IPDBLock
• Which user has what well open. Delete this if IP won’t let you into a
well after (very rare ☺) crash; or wait 5 minutes

• IPDBWellList
• Contains a list of the well names, depth range, create date,
modified date for each well in the database. Try deleting this if your
database won’t open.
Data Structure in IP

• Open one Database at a time

• Have as many as you want

• This database is called Kansas

• Folder in Windows has same name

Data Structure in IP

• Wells have the little Well icon

• Working/Current well name is BOLD

• Loaded wells have black text

• Wells in Database but not loaded

have grey text
Data Structure in IP

• Sort wells by open/active/all in the list

using the 3 icons

• Common reason for “I lost/can’t see

all my wells”
Data Structure in IP

• Wells contain Curve Sets

• Use these to group curves by module,

logging tool, interpreter or your fancy

• Have as many as you like

• The (1) next to the set name is how many

curves are in there

• You always get the Default set. Curves go

there by default, unless you do tell IP
otherwise
Data Structure in IP

• These are the curves...

• They have units...

• Must have unique names

• Each set must have a Depth curve

Window Dropdown Lists

• In general, a work-flow moves from left to right

• File - Database Functions

• Well - Well Functions such as creating and saving

• Input/Output - Data loading and exportation tools

• Edit - Data editing functions

• View - Data viewing functions

• Calculation - Data calculation functions

• Interpretation - Conventional deterministic interpretation functions

Window Dropdown Lists

• Advanced Interpretation – Advanced and non-deterministic functions

• Image Analysis – Image Log Processing and Interpretation

• Multi-Well – Multi-well utilities and workflows

• Tools – Settings for IP, user options and licensing

• User Programs- Develop and run user created programs

• Window - Data calculation functions

• Help - Conventional deterministic interpretation functions

• Workflows – User created workflows

Creating, Saving & Resetting
Wells
Creation of a New Well

• A new well can be created by navigating

to Well > Create New Well

• Or via the “Create New Well” Icon

• Well name must be filled in

• Other fields can be left blank and will

populate based on the first external Data
File Loaded

• Once created the well will be given a

negative number until saved
• Denotes whether the well is in Active
Memory or Stored to the database
Saving a Well

• Wells are held in memory and changes are only committed

back when user saves the wells

• A well can be saved by going to Well > Save Current Well /

Save Current Well As

• Wells can be saved as a new name within current database

• File > Save Wells to

• Save a copy of the current well?
• Saves well(s) to another database

• Save Reminder feature

Messed Up a Well?

• Reset Well feature

• Resets well to last save

Well Header

• Well header information is populated from input data files, manually

typed or loaded using “Load Well Attributes”
• Various Cultural data
• Logging Data Tab is used to store logging run parameter information
Curve Set Manager

• Add / Delete sets here

• Change Step & Depth range (Click edit button on a Set)
• View/Copy/Move curves through View button
Curve Headers Manager

• Overview of all curves in a well

• Types, Descriptions (from DLIS), Quick Statistics, curve editing history
• Lock curve (prevent edit)
• Set Final (flag for easy sorting on export)
Loading Data into IP
Loading Data

• Drag-and-drop LAS files

into IP

• Input/Output menu for

other options

• Special loader for

Formation Tester
(Pressures)

• Special loader for Cap.

Pressure data
LAS Loader

• LAS Name
• Name of curve in LAS file

• IP Name
• How the curve name will
appear in IP

• Type
• Sets defaults of curve
based on type

• Load Into Set

• Curves can be loaded into
different sets

• Load
• Select curves to be loaded
into IP
LAS Loader

• Fill Data Gaps

• Allows the extrapolation
across gaps in the data
during load
• Value is in Well Step
Intervals

• Default Load Set

• User can specify a set to
load all the curves into

• Edit Sets here to add new

sets
LAS Loader

• View File
• Opens up the original LAS file
in a text editor

• LAS Certify
• Used to verify the LAS file
conforms to LAS Standards
• Needs to be downloaded
separately from:
http://www.cwls.org

• Load
• Loads the data into IP

• Create New Well

• Click this then OK to make a
new well with name/header
info inherited from LAS
DLIS Loader

• Multiple DLIS Sub-file Display

• DLIS files can have many sub-files (we
show sub files by big blue boxes)
1. Click sub-file
• Load Set column
• Can select curve go into set here
• Examine File Options tab for other
mapping of curves to sets on load

• New Well?
• Click the Blue Well icon, then click OK
• Enter no text in create well dialog if you
want to inherit from DLIS

• Edit Sets
• You can make a new set in a new well to
load ticked curves into that set
2. Tick Load on curves you want
3. Next
Formation / Zone Data

• Formations and Zones are treated as

the same in IP

• Used in most Interpretive Modules (e.g

different zones needing different Rw
parameter for Sw calculation)
Loading/ Editing Zone Tops

• Load Zone Tops can be found in

• Input / Output > Load Data > Load Zone
Tops

• Data is entered by:

• Pasting data from a spreadsheet using the
paste button
• Manually typing into the boxes

• Zone colours can be changed from the

default if required
Curve Listing / Edit

• Raw data can be viewed by dragging and

dropping a curve to the workspace

• Multiple curves can be viewed in the

preview pane
• Hold Ctrl and select the column header

• Raw values can be edited/nulled and

gaps filled
