Expected Mean, E (X) Standard Deviation, S (X)

The document contains the solutions to two probability questions. For question 2, it finds the probabilities of specific values for a probability function F(x). For question 3, it calculates the expected mean and standard deviation for a given probability distribution, and uses those values to find the expected value and variance of linear transformations of the random variable X.

QUESTION 2

c) Find the probability of F (4).

F (4) = 0.84

d) Find the probability of F (10).

F (10) = 1

e) Find the probability of P (2 < X ≤ 5)

P (a X ≤ b) = F (b) – F (a)

P (2 < X ≤ 5) = F (5) – F (2)

= 1 – 0.35

= 0.65

QUESTION 3

a) Find the expected mean, E (X) and the standard deviation, S(X) for the

probability distribution from results of the experiments.

Amirul luqman asyraf ataa shahmi Total

X 1 2 3 4 5
P (X= x) 0.16 0.19 0.21 0.28 0.16 1
E (X) 0.16 0.38 0.63 1.12 0.8 3.09
E (𝑋 2 ) 0.16 0.76 1.89 4.48 4 11.29

E (X) = ∑ X. P (X=x)

= 3.09

Var(X) = E (𝑋 2 ) – [E (𝑋)]2

= 11.29 - (3.092)

= 1.7419

b) Find E (3X + 2).

E (3X + 2) = 3 E(X) + 2

= 3 (3.09) + 2

= 11.27

c) Find V (5X – 3).

V (5X – 3) = 52 V (X) + 0

= 52 ( 1.7419)

= 43.5475
