RC 2 - Design Analysis and Design Criteria
RC 2 - Design Analysis and Design Criteria
I. INTRODUCTION
This Performance Innovative Task (PIT) of the subject CE67: Reinforced Concrete
Design 2 is a Proposed Two-Storey Commercial Building as a requirement for the 2nd Semester
of S.Y 2018-2019. The commercial building includes a space for a 2 floors fastfood chain with a
roof deck and 3 space for space for lease in each floor. It is also incorporated with utilities and
comfort rooms.
The submitter suggested that the location will be in Poblacion, Ubay, Bohol which
is 24.8 km away from its nearest fault, East Bohol Fault. The other data of the project will be
indicated and classified below.
The overall basis of this project will be based on the specifications given in the
National Structural Codes of the Philippines (NSCP Volume 1) which is recognized by ASEP for
the need of an up-to-date structural code addressing the design and installation of structural
requirements.
CONCRETE
Con-crete compressive strength requirements can vary from 2500 psi (17 MPa)
for residential concrete to 4000 psi (28 MPa) and higher in commercial structures.
Higher strengths up to and exceeding 10,000 psi (70 MPa) are specified for certain
applications. (Source: https://www.nrmca.org/aboutconcrete/cips/35p.pdf)

IV. LOADS
DEAD LOADS
The actual weights of materials and constructions shall be used in determining the
dead loads for the purpose of design. The submitter only listed the materials that are
essential in this project to summarized the table. In the absence of definite information,
values for materials will be based in Table 204-1 and 204-2 from the NSCP 2015.

LIVE LOADS
Floors shall be designed for the unit live loads as a set forth in Table 205-1. These
loads shall be taken as the minimum live loads of horizontal projection to be used in
the design of buildings for the occupancy listed and loads at least equal shall be
assumed for uses not listed in this section but that creates or accommodates similar
loading.
For additional information of data, notes are indicated below the table 205-1 for the
conditions indicated for the live loads.
Building Occupancy
Site Location
-The Philippine archipelago is divided into two seismic zone, zone 2 covers
provinces of Palawan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi while the rest of the country is under
Zone4.

- the location shown in the map will indicate that the values to be used for the near
source factors, Na & Nv, will be in accordance with the Tables 208-5 and 208-6 as set
forth in section 208.4.4.2.
Combination of Loads
- The required stength, U, shall be atleast equal to the effects of factored loads in
Table 405.3.1 with exceptions and additions in section 405.3.3 through 405.3.12 (based
on NSCP 2015).

-Due to the absence of the soil data, it is assumed that the soil profile of the
location is Type Sd. The structure will be assigned by a seismic coefficient, Ca & Cv, in
accordance with the Tables 208-7 and 208-8.
For the project to be completed, the submitter is required to manually analyse the
structure based on the acquired knowledge in the past course, Reinforced Concrete 1
and Earthquake Engineering. The calculations will all be based on the process that has
been introduced in the class with the guidance of the instructors as well as the basis of
NSCP 2015.
