B16 CASE 3
13 Cr Stainless Steel
ASME B16.34 Valves
ASTM A182 F6a Class 1, A182 F6a Class 2, and A217 CA15 Material

Inquiry: May ASTM A182 F6a Class 1 and Class 2 forgings (UNS S41000) and ASTM
A217 CA15 castings (UNS J91150) conforming to the chemical requirements shown in
Tables 1A and 1B, the mechanical properties listed in Tables 2A and 2B, and otherwise
conforming to the applicable requirements in the specifications listed in Table 3 and in
this Case be used for the construction of B16.34 Standard Class valves?

Reply:
It is the opinion of the Committee that the material described in the inquiry may be used
with the applicable requirements of ASME B16.34 for the construction of valves,
provided the following additional requirements are met.
(a) The pressure temperature ratings shall be in accordance with Tables 4A (metric
bar units) and 4B (U.S. Customary psig units) as developed in accordance with
ASME B16.34, Appendix B.
(b) Service temperatures for A182 F6a Class 2 and A217 CA15 materials shall not
exceed 650°C (1200°F). Service temperature for A182 F6a Class 1 shall not
exceed 538ºC (1000ºF).
(c) Class 150 flanged valves shall be limited to 538ºC (1000ºF) service as noted in
Tables 4A and 4B. Welded-end valves may be used to 650ºC (1200ºF) for
appropriate material.
(d) The material described in the inquiry (martensitic stainless steel) shall be
considered a Material Group 2 material for B16.34 applications.
(e) This Case number shall be included in the marking of the valve and including on
the Material Test Report.
