Instructions for proofreading (checking spelling, punctuation, grammar) and proper format

(heading, etc.)

Part I Format

1. The FILENAME (at top left) is ​First Name, Last Name 8 Final Exam/SLE 6

2. The heading is done on the LEFT side of the page:

● STEP #1: Type your first and last name and grade on the FIRST LINE
on the LEFT.
● STEP #2:Type ELA Reading/Language/Spelling on the SECOND LINE
on the LEFT.
● STEP #3:Type the date you are submitting or turning in the essay on
the THIRD LINE on the LEFT
● STEP #4:Type this Title “Final Exam”/SLE 6

Part II Tips for proofreading and editing (-checking spelling, punctuation, and grammar)

STEP #1​.Read the paper out loud to yourself. If YOU hear anything that does not sound
right, highlight that in ​RED​ or ​BLUE. ​Have me look at the words if you cannot EDIT them
by yourself.

​ TEP #​2. Read the paper out loud to someone else who can help you. If THEY hear

STEP #​3. Make sure the page numbers with the name of the author are in
PARENTHESES ​( ).
The period in the last sentence with the evidence should go AFTER the page
Number. This is the MODERN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION (MLA) Format

STEP #​4. For your EVIDENCE, if you are using EXACT words from the book, put them in
QUOTATION MARKS.​ ​“ “ ​If you are not using your own words, you must PARAPHRASE
them. ​(PARAPHRASE = Say them in your own words)

STEP #​5. You must have a THESIS STATEMENT before the three MEAL Paragraphs, and
a PARAPHRASE of the THESIS STATEMENT after the MEAL Paragraphs. I will DEDUCT
SEVERAL POINTS if you are missing a THESIS STATEMENT or the PARAPHRASE.

STEP #6​. You must have at least three CLOSER SENTENCES and two FANBOYS
SENTENCES. (See Sentence Types at the TOP of this page.) Make sure your commas are
BEFORE THE FANBOYS.
STEP #7.​ Make sure you have proper punctuation.

STATEMENTS OF FACT end in PERIODS. ​.


QUESTIONS OR INQUIRIES end in QUESTION MARKS. ​?
Words that show EMOTION or EXCITEMENT use EXCLAMATION POINTS. ​ !

STEP #8​. Make sure that SUBJECTS and VERBS match. (For example: I​ ​AM​ , not I ​ARE​)
Make sure your VERBS are correct, Remember that VERBS tell when things are
happening. This is called the VERB TENSE.

● PAST TENSE talks about things that happened EARLIER IN THE DAY,
YESTERDAY, or BEFORE YESTERDAY.

● PRESENT TENSE talks about things that are happening RIGHT NOW or that
USUALLY happen.

● FUTURE TENSE talks about things that will happen LATER IN THE DAY,
TOMORROW, or AFTER TOMORROW.

STEP #9​. Check the PRONOUNS). Make sure you are using them in the CORRECT WAY
IN THE CORRECT PLACES. For a full list of pronouns go here:

STEP #10​.Make sure you CAPITALIZE properly, including:

● SPECIFIC NAMES OF PEOPLE (example: Thanos, Mr. Lara, Herbie Student)


● SPECIFIC NAMES OF PLACES (example: Wilmington, Disneyland, McDonald’s)
● SPECIFIC NAMES OF THINGS (example: Statue of Liberty)
● First words of SENTENCES.
● The word ​I​ when you are talking about YOURSELF.

STEP #11​. CHECK SPELLING using Dictionary.com.’

STEP #12 ​ Check that your paper is DOUBLE SPACED (skipping lines) and has the
TIMES NEW ROMAN 12 FONT.

STEP #13 ​Make sure you have INSERTED PAGE NUMBERS at the top right.
