Communicate Effectively

EVERYTHING IS NOT WHAT IT SEEMS

1. Entrepreneurs are great communicators. Communication is not grammar and English… it


is Personality, Body Language, Posture…. How you come across to others and how you
listen to them.

2. Dont make assumptions and limit your opinions about them… can negatively impact
communication.

3. Perceptions are our opinions and judgements about people we dunno. Stop forming
opinions and getting biased.

4. We observe just the person’s behavior… but we do not see the underlying factors that bring
about these behaviors. (Behaviors are just tip of the iceberg of a person’s individuality… we
don’t know their Culture, Upbringing, Background, Beliefs, Past experiences, Thoughts,
language… Understand each person’s iceberg ;) )

5. Create good first impressions.

BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION

Comms is key ingredient in success

Communication process has steps:

1. Mode of communication

2. Language used

3. Who is audience

Disruption in communication process is called Barrier… which can lead to Poor relationships,
Wrong assumptions, Rework, etc.

Ex of barriers: Miscommunication, Poor Listening, Technical difficulties, Data misinterpretation,


Not understanding iceberg ;), Incomplete sentences, not paraphrasing, language, gender, etc.

How to overcome:

1. Maintain eye contact

2. Nod and say “Hmmm”, “Aha”

3. Let others complete

4. Don’t conclude early on

5. Clarify your understanding properly

6. Be patient

7. Listen well

HANDSHAKE

Can make out lot about person with their handshake

10 types:

1. The Sweaty Palmer - carry handkerchief pliss

2. Lobster Claw - thumb and forefinger - not appropriate

3. Wrestler - hand on top to show dominance

4. Politician - Sincerity- only with close connections

5. The Phantom - very quick - they have somewhere else to be

6. Lingerer - shaking hands and holding hands

7. Decliner - fussy peeps - don’t touch hands without sanitizer

8. Vice - Terrible Pain, asserting superiority

9. Professional - extend hands, put thumbs straight up and right in, give a firm grip, shake it
twice and leave it xD (Don’t shake horizontally, shake vertically)

BODY LANGUAGE

Indicates how our mood is today - agitated, calm, sad, attentive, distracted, etc.

Can get to know mood by observing:

1. Facial Expressions

2. Gestures

3. Posture

4. Clothes

5. Eye Contact

6. Importantly how we meet and greet peeps

They create perceptions about our personality, trustworthiness, professionalism and


capabilities.

Firm handshake means we’re professional and mean business

Very hard (Vice) means dominating and unprofessional.

Warm smile and steady eye contact - confidence, courteousness, trustworthy

Dressing and grooming also matters…

Dressing appropriately means professional

Maintaining space - respect other peoples space - one arm distance
