12 Confidential TECHNIP – Not to disclose without their authorization

Installation Vessels and Barges
Flexible pipes can be laid using a large range of naval
supports from very small to very large and sophisticated
ones:

1. Supply Vessels (DP)

2. Conventional Anchored Barges

3. Anchor Handling Tugs (DP AHT)

4. Diving Support Vessels (DP DSV)

5. Multipurpose Construction Vessels (MCV)

One of the main selection criteria is deck space.

25 Confidential TECHNIP – Not to disclose without their authorization

Overview of Installation Equipment

 Over Boarding Chute

 Radius typically ranging from 3m
up to 5m

 Flat profile or V shape profile

 V shape can provide a greater
allowable tension

 Can be placed at different location

on vessel:
 Moonpool, stern, side

Overview of Installation Equipment
Horizontal caterpillar tensioner
 Bi, Tri or Quad track tensioner
 The more tracks the greatest
allowable tightening load
 V shape pads with different
opening angles
 Maximum holding tension
around 30 Te for tri cat
 Maximum tightening force /
holding tension depending on
structure crushing resistance
 2 or 3 tensioners can be put in
line Flat profile or V shape profile
 Could take up to 90Te of installation
tension

Overview of Installation Equipment
Vertical Laying System (VLS®)

 Vertical quad tensioners installed

over moonpool

 Suitable for deep water / high

tension

 Up to 125 Te for single VLS®

 Up to 270 Te tension holding

capacity for double VLS®

 Modular system can be mounted on

different vessel
Modular Mobile System
 Lay speed up to 900m/hour

5. Installation Considerations

30 Confidential TECHNIP – Not to disclose without their authorization

Installation Considerations

 Installation equipment selection depends on

 Water depth / laying tension
 Deep water / high tension calls for VLS®

 Shallow water / low tension calls for tensioner

 Specific Flexible pipe design criteria

 Minimum Bending Radius

 Crushing capacity

 Deck space / vessel limitations

 Cost comparison: vessel size and rate VS. number of trips and small vessel to install
large number of reels

 Ancillary equipment to be installed (stiffener, buoyancy …)

 Installation Engineering and Flexible Design engineering work hand

in hand as an integrated solution.

5. Handling Precautions

32 Confidential TECHNIP – Not to disclose without their authorization

Handling Precautions
 Flexibles pipes are:
 A robust technical solution,
 Practically easy to install assuming
minimum basic precautions are taken to
ensure their integrity.

 Specific care must be given to:

 Ensure that there are no sharp edges along
the flexible lay path in order to protect the
flexible pipe outer sheath.
 Maintain a suitable curvature to the pipe at
all times.
 Ensure the integrity of the end fittings during
overboarding and connections

 All damages can be avoided by good

working practices

Flowline Installation

 As a terminology the Flexible Flowlines cover all static

flexible pipelines including static flexible risers (i.e in I-
tubes or clamped)
 Standard Flowlines configurations are:
 Platform to Platform (I-tubes or rigid risers),
 Platform (I-tube or rigid riser) to Subsea,
 Subsea to Subsea,

For specific environment Flexible Flowlines can be protected
by:

1. Extra Layers (outer sheath and external carcass)

2. Concrete Mattresses

3. Trenching & Ploughing

Conclusion

 Fast laying speed

 Complex and optimized routing with small radius curve
 Possibility to use DP medium sized vessel for installation on
congested fields (no anchors)
 Versatility of installation vessel / barge selection
 Various installation scenarios can be developed (temporary
abandonment, pre-installation…)
 Easy to recover and re-use
