Music 372: Harpsichord Class for Music Majors

Syllabus
Spring 2019 Friday: 12:00 PM—1:40 PM

Professor: Masako Okamura Klassen, D.M.A. Office: CPAC-219C

Phone: Cell 909-214-0790
Email: [email protected]
Office Hour: MWF: 8:50-9:00 AM, 9:50-11:00 AM, 11:50 AM-12:50 PM (Wed only by
appointment)

Class and Practice Requirement: In order for students to do well in this course, class attendance
is of crucial importance. As a measure of each student’s effort, class attendance will be checked
at each class meeting. You are allowed a maximum of one (1) unexcused absence. Thereafter,
each hourly absence will count as a 1/3 deduction of your final grade point (e.g., A+ → A → A-, and
so forth and so on). A student who is arrives at class up to 10 minutes late will be counted as
tardy. A student who is tardy 2 times will be considered as having one absence.

Practice is an essential part of the course. Students are required practice at least 4 hours each
week. Please sign up for your practice schedule; however, do not block any more than 2
continuous hours on any day. Points will be deducted from your final grade if you fail to maintain
the required practice schedule.

Students need to practice and be ready to perform in class every week. You will be receiving a
new piece approximately every 2 weeks. You are expected to play the assigned piece at a
performance ready level each week. The professor will grade each performance.

Listening Requirement: A two-page written report (typed and double spaced) along with a
bibliography page must be turned in 1 week before the final’s week. The performance (recording)
must be a professional or a university faculty recital or a graduate level recital that represents the
harpsichord instrument. You complete this requirement with listening to audio recordings. You
first must listen to baroque keyboard music played on both the harpsichord and the piano. Second,
you must compare each performance in a two-page written report.

Student Responsibility: Please carefully read the policies in the class schedule for dropping and
adding this class. It is your responsibility to drop the class, if you are no longer able to fulfill the
class requirements. Each student is required to perform every week. Also, students are required to
stay the whole class hour and to politely listen to the other students’ lessons. If you are not well
prepared for the class, the instructor will stop your lesson. Since this class is conducted on a tight
time schedule, students must be diligent in not wasting valuable class time. The instructor reserves
the right to ask you to leave the classroom at anytime, if you are being disruptive and/or not in
compliance with the class/school rules.

Exams: There is a mid-term and a final exam. The student’s performance is graded on each exam
(no written test). The dates of the exams and the music to be played for the exams will be
announced prior to the exams. There is absolutely no make-up for any missed exam. Please do
not ask for an early or alternate exam time in order to accommodate your personal wants and
needs.
