Per experts, a normal human being can lose nearly 100 hair strands per day without any significant worry;
however, losing more than 200 on a regular basis should attract immediate attention. Hair fall, if within normal
limits, is a regular process. As new hair grow, old ones give way by falling off. Usually, lost hair are replaced
by new ones from the same hair follicle. Nearly
every man and woman desires long, thick, and strong hair. Every person wants his/her hair density to be high
along with hair having high strength. Seldom you will find any person who wants to be bald. Although both
the genders care equally cautious and worried about their hair, women having longer hair seem to be more
concerned about hair loss. Hair loss is a common problem with men and women across the world. Few people
who are very particular about their hair immediately resort to measures. Others who do not care about it
eventually end up being bald or with patches. In many cases, people resort to gels, creams, oral medications,
etc. You will be surprised to know about some home remedies that can help you with hair loss. Not only these
home remedies can prevent hair loss, these can even promote hair growth, strength, and shine.

Causes of Hair Loss

Insufficient/Improper Diet

Proper diet is very essential to have good quality hair. Insufficient/improper diet is one of the largest causes of
hair fall in adolescents and adults. Many nutritional deficiencies can result in hair fall. Deficiency of nutrients
like vitamin A, B12, B6, folic acid, vitamin C, biotic, copper, iron, zinc, etc. can cause hair fall. Hair fall can
also be a sign of vitamin A toxicity and deficiency. Lack of proper nourishment can render hair brittle, dry,
kinky, and with split-ends. Therefore, it is very essential to have proper and balanced diet to have good quality
hair and prevent hair loss.
Age :

Generally, with age, hair fall. As a person ages, scalp loses its grip on hair, which results in hair loss.
Generally, male-pattern baldness and female-pattern baldness are both result of age-related hair loss.

Pollution :

Too much of pollution can also result in hair fall. There are places in which amount of pollution is too much in
the environment, especially in industrial belts. Also, when hair follicles get exposed to pollution constantly,
their quality deteriorates and they fall.

Heredity :

It is one of the most common causes of hair loss, at least in men. Mostly, men who turn bald and experience
excessive hair loss in their 40s have a history of baldness in their family. There is nothing much that can be
done for this type of hair loss, though.

Stress :

Stress is also one of causes of hair loss. It is said that more a person is stress, more are his/her chances of
losing hair. It also includes lack of sleep, insomnia, restlessness, and many other factors. Stress can clearly
show up on your hair health.

Chemicals :

Use of harmful chemicals in form of dyes, shampoos, colors, etc. can result in hair fall. Harsh chemicals are
harmful for hair in any case. Not only these chemicals damage present hair, but also inhibit further growth of
hair. Therefore, it is suggested to avoid use of harsh, harmful chemicals, dyes, colors on hair.
Hormonal Imbalance

A person can also experience hair loss due to hormonal imbalance. Generally, during pregnancy, women go
through hormonal chances, which triggers hair loss for a particular period. This kind of hair loss generally
subsides after delivery. In other cases, where hormonal imbalance is more severe, a person can end up being
bald.

Medical Treatment :

People undergoing medical treatment can experience hair loss. However, the loss can be reversible, it takes a
toll on whole head once. People on chemotherapy can end of losing all hair. Similar is with birth control pills
and many high-strength antibiotics.

Other Causes :

Some other causes of hair loss can be trauma, tumors, syphilis, connective tissue diseases, infections of the
scalp, improper hair care, over-brushing, etc. An immune problem known as alopecia areata can also cause
loss of hair from eyelashes, eyebrows, beard, and other parts of the body.
Home Remedies for Hair Loss

Rubbing of Scalp :

Vigorous rubbing of scalp with fingers after

washing hair with cold water is one of the most effective home remedies for hair loss. Ideally, scalp should be
rubbed vigorously until it starts to tingle with the heat. The exercise will activate the sebaceous glands and
improve circulation of blood across the scalp.
Amla Oil :

Regular head massage with amla oil can be very

beneficial in preventing further hair loss. Amla has properties that promote hair growth by activating the
underlying tissues in scalp. Moreover, it acts as a valuable hair tonic. You can either use amla oil available in
the market or prepare your own in home by boiling dry pieces of amla in coconut oil. Regular gentle massage
promotes hair growth and prevents hair loss.
Lettuce :

It is very useful in preventing hair loss. According

to experts, a mixture of lettuce and spinach juice can help with hair growth if taken to the extent to half a liter a
day.
Mustard Oil with Henna Leaves :

Mustard oil when boiled with henna leaves gains

properties that are highly beneficial for hair growth. Boil about 250 ml of mustard oil and add about 60 grams
of henna leaves into it gradually. Filter the oil from leaves and store it. Use this preparation for gentle massage
on a regular basis. Regular and long-term usage shows amazing results.
Coconut Milk :

Regular application of coconut milk into hair roots

can help a great deal in preventing hair loss. Coconut milk is rich in vital nutrients and vitamins and promotes
hair growth. Coconut milk can be prepared by grinding coconut shavings and squeezing them well.
Onion :

Onion has also been found beneficial in treating

patchy baldness. Rubbing the affected part with onion twice a day can promote hair growth. Affected area can
be treated with honey after rubbing with onion.
Refined Coconut Oil :

Daily application of refined coconut oil mixed

with lime water and lime juice on the hair can prevent hair loss. It can also promote hair growth.
Coriander :

Apply juice of green coriander leaves on the scalp

to get benefits. Coriander is rich in vitamin A and other nutrients, and promotes hair growth.
Black Gram and Fenugreek :

Wash hair with a paste of cooked black gram and

fenugreek on a regular basis. This can help elongate hair and promote hair growth.
Castor Oil :

Regular gentle massage with castor oil promotes

hair growth and gives it shine and strength.
Saw Palmetto :

It is the first choice of herbalists to treat hair loss.

Actually, it blocks the formation of dihydrotestosterone, a hormone thought to kill hair follicles, leading to
androgenic alopecia. Consume about 160 mgs of saw palmetto on a regular basis twice a day.
Aloe :

Aloe gel can be applied on scalp before going to

bed. Also, one can consume a couple teaspoonfuls of aloe juice on a regular basis. It promotes hair growth and
prevents hair loss.
Arnica :

Apply Arnica to the scalp twice a day in the form

of cream, ointment, or hair rinse made fromarnica tincture diluted with warm water. It increases blood
circulation across scalp, thereby promoting hair growth.
Jojoba Oil :

Regular and long-term application of jojoba oil

across scalp gently helps hair growth.
Emu Oil :

Emu oil or kalaya oil is recommended as a

moisturizer and hair-root stimulant to promote hair growth.
Rosemary :

Rosemary helps to keep hair healthy and lush. Just

add one part of rosemary oil to two parts of almond oil and massage into the scalp gently for around 15
minutes a day on a regularbasis.

Diet to Prevent Hair Loss

Hair health depends a lot on person's diet. In most of the cases, hair loss is triggered by improper diet.
Generally, people under-nourish themselves when it comes to eating. They do not care about proper balance of
nutrients in their diet. People with a tendency to lose hair should take a well-balanced and complete diet.
According to experts, a diet containing good quantities of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables and fruits can provide
adequate amounts of all the vital nutrients required for good hair growth. Also, foods like milk, vegetable oils,
honey, wheat germ, yeast, liver, etc. also prove to be really good for hair growth.

To prevent hair loss and promote hair growth, one can consume following dietarysupplements and
foods:

• High-potency multivitamin with 50 mg iron with 1 gram of vitamin C to boost iron absorption.
• One tablet of hydrochloric acid (HC1) and one digestive enzyme capsule after each meal along with 1/2
teaspoon of powdered acidophilus dissolved in 2 ounces of water twice a day between meals.
• Foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and other vital nutrients.
• Eat iron-rich fruits and foods. Include apples, beetroot and jaggery in your diet.

Other Preventive Measures include:

• Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet. All in all, aim for 5 to 6 servings each day.
• Choose whole-grain foods, such as 100% whole-wheat or whole-grain bread, cereals, pasta, etc.
• Consume 4 to 5 servings per week of nuts, seeds, and dried beans.
• Prefer soft margarine, low-fat mayonnaise, light salad dressing, and unsaturated vegetable oils, like olive,
corn, canola, safflower.
• Avoid sweet, sugary foods and beverages.

I took Gingko Biloba for general circulation, but noticed the amount of hair in the shower drian was getting less over time. My
thinning hair on top my head got thicker and my receeding hairline started to fill back in. I could feel the little hairs on my
foeehead growing back. My barber of 12 years one day asked me if I was using Rogaine because my hair wasn't as thin. I said no
and then knew it was the Gingko which thins the blood and also expandes capilaires just as Rogiane does. I still a have some
receceding hairline but not much. Give it 4 to 6 months with a coupea of pills a day.

#9 - Callum - 06/29/2009 - 07:46

Hi..

I too had similar hair problems and it started since my PG. I spent thousands or rupees to cut it down but it is of no use. I also
read lot of blogs and tried all methods. Now luckily I found out one hair loation which is working for me in eliminating dandruff
and keep hair fall at the bay. Pls try Betnovate Scalp Loation, apply on scalp and smoothly speard it with finger tips and wash in
the morning. I sticked to the schedule of washing hair everyday but applied mild shampoo like clairon anti flake every alternate
day. Now hair fall has subsidised and I see hair growth also. I also suggest to follow few things below
1. Complete 8 hours of Sleep everyday
2. Take beatroot, carrot, cabbage, spinach, red gram dhal(Toor Dhal) in your diet(Potassium, Sulphur and Protein rich foods are
essential to rejuvenate hair growth)
3. Good number of nuts specially Almonds, Walnut
4. Wash hair regularly, can also be done with plain water(luke warm) if your skin is not oily
5. Apply yoghurt/curd once a week mixed with green gram flour to keep hair healthy
6. Drink atleast 2-3 liters of water every day
7. Eat boiled egg by removing the yolk part. Eat only white part as yolk contains cholestral.

Dont worry hair loss is a natural phenomenon and it cannot be sopped...but delayed. Get rid of dandruff with the help of a doctor.
Eat a lot of vegetables, Stop smoking and avoid abusing your hair with all the latest shampoos. You have a thousand plus
solutions off the shelf but they are all fake including hair transplant - they only fleece money. Drink a lot of water and get to meet
a good doctor. CUTIS on BVK Ivyengar Road, Bangalore is a good place to visit. I have known many cases of hair fall stop &
regrowth. You need to stick to the prescription without fail.

#18 - Maverick - 09/11/2009 - 07:55

If you are experiencing hair turning white and falling out, make sure you do not have a dental infection. If your teeth are bad,
your hair will fall out. Sometimes in circles of white hair that fall out. In any case, it can be a warning sign to check your teeth.
And or see a doctor. Some folks just have bad hair. Shave it off. No worries!

Hi, my name is Valerie. To slow down or stop hair loss try massaging castor oil into the scalp. Coat the entire head from the root
to the very end of the shaft preferably @night before bed. Take a plastic bag and wrap all the hair. The oil is very thick and
messy and the plastic will contain it. Leave it over night and wash with baby shampoo. Do not use any heat or chemicals on the
hair. Repeat procedure three times a week. If possible don't wash in between. Daily hair cleansing strips the hairs natural oils.
Once you achieve ur goal administer oil once a week to maintain. This is a very natural, inexpensive, & reliable way to restore
hair. Let me know of ur progress. P. S. Don't use products containing alcohol as they r very drying and damaging as
well! valeric263@gmail. com

#57 - bipasha - 07/18/2010 - 10:30

My hair was thinning gradually over the years but I had so much hair that it really wasn't a big deal. By last summer I was really
bald. I barely had any hair on top. I had a hair [@]ysis done from Herbal Healer Acaemy and it turns out I was malnutritioned.
My body was not absorbing minerals like it should especially iron. I was anemic which causes hair loss. Plus i needed zinc and
some others. My naturopathic specialist told me what to take. I orded it from her and all my hair grew back.
#58 - michelle - 07/25/2010 - 23:35

I lose about 100 hairs everyday. very depressing. Been going on for years off and on. I have had all the tests and the doctors come

anything to do with me losing my hair? I have tried everything. I am so scared i am going to end up having to get a wig! Please
help. :-( [email protected]

burdensome that you cannot do it on your own. You have to surrender this issue to him. I have found some information by
individual that God gave the knowledge to. If you would like to cure baldness, I would like to share the information with you. I
have remedies that can help someone who is slick bald recover hair even if they have suffered from it years. Scientist have
performed autospys on individual who were completely bald, but had hair springing to growth follicle that was laying dormant
underneath the skin. I have news to help you.

there r many reson for hair loose. take blood test - iron, protien, calcium, hemoglobin. if any of these r low means go meet a
doctor. for men its better to shave their head once in a year & keep short hair. pls do not use minoxdil or any chemical products,
it will give many side effects. there is remedy for baldness. u can use Himalya's HAIR-ZONE spray& take Dabur Thiripala
tablets, very effective. take 2 tablets half n hour B4 breakfast&2 tablets B4 dinner, its 100% natural & very very safe for all ages.
pls avoid coffee, tea, soft drinks, ice water. stop smoking & drinking alcohol. do learn yoga&meditation. Thiripala is well known
ayurvedic medicine for stress, it doesnt contain any metals, its 100% natural(pls see ayurvedea doctor) use Thripala for 48
days(long term is very good even for children) USE MILD SHAMPOO. drink plenty of water. reduce body weight,u can find
amazing result by taking Thripala. Stop worring about hair loose. dont always think about it, LIFE IS BEAUTYFUL EVEN
WITHOUT HAIR.;-)

#106 - Dhruvika - 12/08/2010 - 06:05

Those who think that they are loosing hair for a few days or even a few weeks in a row, need not worry as the hair to periodically
fall out to allow the new ones to grow through. You only have a problem if new hair growth is not present, ie you are loosing
more hair than the new ones are growing out.
Another treatment , which should be applied only on the effected areas is red onion juice rubbed in and left for a couple of hours
before washing away with a mild shampoo.
Avoid, hair dryers ,curlers , straighteners and stick with a shampoo that suits you, and you will know which one as your hair
would feel good after washing with it . This is something that you would have to experiment with different shampoos until you
find the right one. Obviously need to eat less or no red meat and junk food and, more fresh and real earth grown food.

#108 - mohit - 12/12/2010 - 01:23

*You need good dental care-brushing, flossing, dental check up.

*You all need VERY good night sleep- 8hrs nightly
*You need good eating habit- lots af vegies, whole grain, nuts, water.
*Live free from stress by believing JESUS, casting every worry you have on Him and be free from life's worry-you can't change
it by stressing your body. Because He CAME to rescue you from all this imperfect life --for there is no god who can come and
die for you so that you can live! It is free to trust Him, you will be so much happier. You will be saved. Take His word(bible).
God bless you.

#109 - Free from Worry - 12/13/2010 - 11:16

Your parents will die, they cannot be there for you forever. Your spouse too. Forget girlfriends/boyfriends. You will face
disappointments with anyone sooner or later in life, if not now.
Nobody has a perfect family- which we know they should be more loving than strangers. BUT He never sleeps, dies, rests. He
watches over you 24/7. Always hears your prayer and grants you for your best. IF, if you ONLY get to know how loving He is,
you will trust Him and want to live what He said, because, what He REALLY wants from you is...YOUR HAPPINESS.
Now, trust JESUS and accept Him and be free from ALL of your burdens. He will give you peace & comfort that NOBODY can
give you on this earth.
I am a living proof. He changed my life 100%. I cannot keep it to myself. It is your decision today.
God loves you so much so that He had to come to us and save us from our tendency of sin, so we can be so much happier.
He is not killable but He willingly became killable, lost His godship and went to hell for us. And He said 'It is worthwhile'. So if
you take Jesus as your savior, you will never be unhappy.
Change your heart and GROW YOUR HAIR!

#110 - Redeemer - 12/13/2010 - 11:44

IF someone broke my lamp, he will have to pay for it or myself have to pay(and forgive him) and buy new one.
Somebody had to pay for our sin, that is Jesus.
He had to come and die to PAY our sin.
That was the ONLY way.
So we can be accepted in heaven if we trust Jesus.
Because God(unlike us) doesn't know sin.
He is perfect and mighty but we are not.
Ford knows all about cars because he made cars.
God knows all about us because God created us. He knows what's best for us.
Two year old baby doesn't know a thing about why his parents doesn't let him play on a highway,
or why he should be in a baby seat while in the car. He just doesn't want to get in.
We are like that. The baby cannot survive without parents care. But we want to live w/o His care. We simply cannot live/be
happy without Him. Because He created us and knows what's best for us. Surrender to Him and you won't regret it.
*Best of all, you CAN grow your hair! ---If you take my advice. God loves you.

#111 - Jman - 12/13/2010 - 12:08

For some of you out there, in case wondering why, why, bloody dying on the cross?
Above is the reason.
*If Mr.A is guilty of something, he should go to jail, but if Mr.C, instead, is willing to go to jail for him, then Mr.A is a freeman.
That's us!
Jesus paid for our penalty so that we can be free.
And we all know no men on this planet would do such thing for you.
Not only your hair back but also with ultimate happiness you seek will be coming to you.
Remember............................
HE lOVES YOU LIKE NONE OTHER.

#112 - Lena O. - 12/13/2010 - 12:20

Oh, I have a very interesting book for you who are interest in.

Called,... [Reason for God] by Tim Keller.

Not only this changed my life, I am so much happier, I've met my wife here in NYC at the church and have FULL oF HAIR
back!!!

I wonder what took me so long!

Friends, you will be so happy getting full of LIFE

as well as full of HAIR!!!

Call me Harry:)

#113 - Michael Johnson, NYC - 12/13/2010 - 12:30

I have tried this remedy and it works, first of all in order to immediately stop hair fall you have to shave your head, I shaved my
head seven times backwards (against the growth angle of hair) after every two days, and every night apply coconut oil mixed
with small amount of antimony (Surma), gently massage for 20 - 30 minutes, leave for the night and wash in morning with bath
soap (Like lifebuoy) do not use perfumed soaps or shampoo, try to give your scalp as much air and sunlight possible, keep
applying coconut oil and antimony till you get satisfactory results, I am still applying this method and believe me I have 70%
improvement!

I am 47 yrs old. I started loosing hair after fever named Typhoyed twice at the age of 13. Since then I keep loosing hair and keep
recovering them evertime. I almost used all product available in market but no use. But I keep taking care of my hair and still left
almost all but thin. Few tips to young people.
1. 7-8 hrs peaceful sleep is must.
2. No more unwanted thinking, left all worries to god.
3. Apply coconut oil, insted market product maid with chemical.
4. If possible during season buy Makka plants with amla and make your own oil boiling in coconut oil.
5. USe thrice a week white bulk of egg on your head /hair for few minutes and wash with normal water, use broad teeth of comb
to comb hairs during washing with shower. Also eat white bulk of eggs.
6. Use Petalka or other herbal shamppo.
7. Drink plenty water.
8. Do SHIRSHASAN everyday, learn how to do.
9. Generally hairloss associated with hot body, if body temp /blood is cool, hairs are good.
10. If hot body, dont eat food which warm up body i.e. fish phamplet, prawns, crabs, goat meet and rest.
11. Even thoug hairs fall, during applying luke warm oil, pull hairs holding at roots, which will make remaing strong. Or use big
teeth of come to do massage on scalp
12. Kepp hair small. MILITARY CUT.
13. Do Bhasari pranayam 10-15 minutes.
14. Find time to rub nails each other during a day.
15. Eat amal and green vegitable.
16. Now a days you can buy hair products from PATANJALI shop, Baba Ramdevji.
17. If u r smoking /drinking more, stop. Which can grey ur hair early.
18. Have pieceful mind, no unwanted thougts ,worries. This is only reason for hair fall if no baldness history in family.
19. HAir problem is also related with ur leaver, so go to doctor for check up.
20. Go to dermetologiest, to check reason of fall.
21. Always see the photograph of people who have long thick hairs and get menatally satsified.
22. Hairs are like arrow of bow, once left, no coming back but new hairs always born, when no more birth to new hair, baldness
is sure, so shaved ur head and be proud of bald family.
Good luck. Your comments pls on, my mail id - [email protected]

Dear All, I had similar problems with hair loss and some simple things have helped control it to a large extent. Eat a large
tablespoon of roasted Flaxseeds everyday. Drink 5-6 cups of green tea. Add some soya to your daily diet. Eat one whole walnut
and 4-5 almonds every morning. Eat a couple of figs and dates every day if possible. Do de stressing activities like yoga and
pranayam each day. Do all of this and see wonderful results not only on your hair, but on skin and general health too! I promise
you this small effort on your part will bring you very happy results.

Everyone, especially females, want faster hair growth products. This could be due to many reasons such as an upcoming event or
even just to boost their esteem. Long hair has been the goal for many people at this age and time. It's considered to be trendy
amongst younger generations, hair growth vitamins, and the older generations view it as a way to look vital and young. There are
a few key things that you must know in order to obtain hair loss in men.
Natural hair loss in women treatments are an obvious alternative to drugs. Their first advantage is that they don't have any side
effects. hair replacement, such treatments as Saw Palmetto were used by men since ancient times. Would have anyone used it if it
hadn't been effective? Overall, I recommend natural baldness cures consisting of natural ingredients as the most effective solution
to natural herbal supplements.

At present, I am still using the Leimo Hair Treatment Pack as part of my daily hair care routine. I am indeed very thankful to
Leimo because without it, I would have no way of stopping my hair loss problems. Without it, I probably would have had a
worse case of excessive hair loss or major hair thinning.

I stopped using my Rogain. Now I use Biotin supplements that I bought from Sprouts. I spend 8 bucks on 90 pills, that is 90 days
of pills for 8 bucks. Use slightly above the recommended daily value. If you use too much you will get acne. It seems to be
growing my hair back. You can only get Biotin from certain foods like eggs and not many people eat those foods every day.

Natural hair loss is mainly a result of genetics and changes in hormone levels. Additional causes can be health issues, such as
thyroid problems, reactions to medical treatments such as chemotherapy, the side effects of medications that include steroids,
serious illness, auto-immune disorders, pregnancy, unusually high levels of stress, and malnutrition. There are hair supplements
like Reloxe a natural hair regrowth supplement which you can use.

Before going to bed put oil in a small container. The quantity of the oil should be in proportion to the length and density of your
hair so as to be applicable on your complete hair. Apply oil on the tip of your fingers and rub it gently on the base of your hair
enabling it to penetrate in to the roots of your hair. Let the oil gradually seep into roots of your hair & nourish them for the whole
night.Do not apply on your palms and rub it vigorously as it may uproot weak hair. Slow application and massage of hair only
would yield better results. The oil may be removed in the morning with washing of hair with a mild shampoo which does not
contain chemicals

The answer is yes, but it may be contributing factor along with other reasons. Yes, stress and hair loss can be related. According
to Mayo clinic Trichologists and Psychiatrists three types of hair loss that can be associated with high stress levels are:
Alopecia areata: A variety of factors are thought to cause alopecia areata, possibly including severe stress. With alopecia areata,
white blood cells attack the hair follicle, stopping hair growth and making hair fall out.
Telogen effluvium: In this condition, emotional or physical stress pushes large numbers of growing hairs into a resting phase.
Within a few months, the affected hairs may fall out suddenly when simply combing or washing your hair.
Trichotillomania: is an irresistible urge to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas of your body. Hair pulling can be
a way of dealing with negative or uncomfortable feelings, such as stress, anxiety, tension, loneliness, fatigue or frustration.
Stress and hair loss don't have to be permanent. If you get your stress under control, your hair may grow back. Be sure to talk to
your doctor if you notice sudden or patchy hair loss or more than usual hair loss when combing or washing your hair. Sudden hair
loss can signal an underlying medical condition that requires treatment. If needed, your doctor may suggest treatment options for
the hair loss as well. And if efforts to manage your stress on your own don't work, talk to your doctor about stress management
techniques.

The Characteristics and Motivations of Contemporary

Entrepreneurship Students
Duval-Couetil, Nathalie; Gotch, Chad M.; Yi, Soohyun

Journal of Education for Business, v89 n8 p441-449 2014

Entrepreneurship is among the fastest growing curricular areas at universities. The rationale for delivering
entrepreneurship education to students is well understood; however, minimal research has examined the
characteristics, motivations, and attitudes of those choosing to enroll. The authors examine data collected
across 5 years from 2,664 students enrolled in a multidisciplinary entrepreneurship course offered at a
major university in the United States. It highlights why demographic characteristics, career intentions, and
what is termed "entrepreneurial maturity" should be taken into consideration in course and program
development. The study provides valuable baseline data that can inform entrepreneurship education
research, pedagogy, and assessment.

Creative Behavior, Motivation, Environment and Culture: The

Building of a Systems Model
Hennessey, Beth A.

Journal of Creative Behavior, v49 n3 p194-210 Sep 2015

With the exception of research examining the productivity of teams, the empirical study of creativity was
until recently almost exclusively focused at the level of the individual creator. Investigators and theorists
typically chose to decontextualize the creative process and failed to include a consideration of anyone or
anything beyond the person doing the creating. The last decade has seen a long overdue proliferation of
research focused on the creative milieu and the myriad of environmental factors that impact creators and
serve to boost or inhibit their creativity of performance. In particular, the increasing globalization of
corporate, entrepreneurial, and educational environments has underscored the need to take into
consideration the impact of cultural forces. This article chronicles the construction of a systems model of
creativity designed to incorporate a consideration of creative behavior at multiple levels of analysis. Over
and above an examination of individual difference variables, the argument is made that creativity must be
explored at the "little-c" cultural level (e.g., the culture of the classroom or workplace), at the societal
level, and at the "Big-C" cultural level (i.e., culture writ large). An application of this systems approach is
made to classroom-based data collected in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.

The Relationship between Self-Perceived Generic Competences and

Entrepreneurial Intention
Kakkonen, Marja-Liisa

Industry and Higher Education, v26 n3 p217-227 Jun 2012

This paper reports on a qualitative study in Finland of the relationship between self-perceived generic
competences and the entrepreneurial intentions of business students when they started their Bachelor's
degree studies. The study was based on course-related written assignments of one international student
group. The findings illustrated three different types of student competence profiles: independent
achievers, social team players and dependent individuals; and they also created a starting point for the
later examination of competence development. (Contains 1 table and 4 figures.)

Attitudes and Motivations of Polish Students towards Entrepreneurial
Activity
Jones, Paul; Miller, Christopher; Jones, Amanda; Packham, Gary; Pickernell, David; Zbierowski,
Przemyslaw

Education & Training, v53 n5 p416-432 2011

Purpose: The Polish economy is continuing its expansion through the adoption of free market economics
in the post-communist era. To encourage this growth in a future where difficult global economic
conditions are likely to persist, it is essential that entrepreneurial activity is encouraged within the next
generation of graduates. This study aims to explore the attitudes and motivations of Polish students
towards an entrepreneurship education programme. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve the
research objectives the methodological approach adopted for this study involved semi-structured
interviews undertaken with 122 Polish students. Each student undertook an interview within which they
were asked to reflect on the impact of an entrepreneurship education programme on their entrepreneurial
attitudes and motivations. Findings: This study builds on Jones "et al.", whose "snapshot" study found
that Polish students had limited prior entrepreneurial experiences and expectations and welcomed the
opportunity to undertake entrepreneurship education. The findings here confirmed the results of the prior
study, but also provided greater insight regarding the reasons underpinning respondent behaviour.
Research limitations/implications: The data collected within this study are limited to the experience of
Polish students. It is questionable whether the results are generalisable to different nationalities.
Additional research must be undertaken to explore this further. Practical implications: The results have
implications for the construction and delivery of entrepreneurship education to student groups.
Originality/value: The study contributes to the extant knowledge in the context of the experience of
enterprise education in a developing country. The paper will be of value to enterprise education providers
in aiding the construction and delivery of such programmes.

Exploring Graduate Entrepreneurship. A Collaborative, Co-Learning
Based Approach for Students, Entrepreneurs and Educators
Hannon, Paul D.; Collins, Lorna A.; Smith, Alison J.

Industry and Higher Education, v19 iss1 p11-23 Feb 2005

There is a strong interest in knowledge-based economies in increasing the levels of graduate

entrepreneurship. The role of higher education in this context is crucial in enhancing the motivation and
capability of graduates to engage in entrepreneurial activity. However, traditional pedagogical approaches
in business and management as applied to entrepreneurship education may be limiting the opportunities
for students to develop entrepreneurial skills, knowledge and behaviour. If the need for increased levels of
graduate entrepreneurship is to be met, it is important to develop more innovative and entrepreneurial
approaches. Shifting the underpinning paradigm to one derived from a humanist philosophy suggests a
co-learning approach in which both learner and educator participate in the learning process. This paper
highlights the need for innovation in the supply of entrepreneurship education in UK higher education
institutions to enhance graduate entrepreneurship. The authors reflect on and examine the experience of
piloting a collaborative co-learning approach to entrepreneurship education that engages university
students from a range of disciplines, local entrepreneurs and educators in the learning and development
process. Finally, they explore the challenge that embedding such an approach poses to the development of
entrepreneurship education in UK HEIs. The paper adds to the body of knowledge in the area of graduate
entrepreneurship and raises important issues for policy makers, practitioners, educators and entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs and Public-Sector Employees: The Role of

Achievement Motivation and Risk in Occupational Choice.
Tucker, Irvin B., III

Journal of Economic Education, v19 n3 p259-68 Sum 1988

Presents a study that investigated how achievement motivation and risk affect entrepreneurs and
nonentrepreneurs in their selection of occupations. Concludes that the will to be independent and
successful is more important to entrepreneurs than for others, while personal risk-taking preferences are
not significant in explaining entrepreneurial occupational choice. (GEA)

Determining Your Potential as an Entrepreneur. PACE Revised. Level

2. Unit 2. Research & Development Series No. 240BB2.
Ashmore, M. Catherine; Pritz, Sandra G.

This unit on determining one's potential as an entrepreneur, the second in a series of 18 modules, is on the
second level of the revised PACE (Program for Acquiring Competence in Entrepreneurship)
comprehensive curriculum. Geared to advanced secondary and beginning postsecondary or adult students,
the modules provide an opportunity to learn about and try out entrepreneurship ideas so that students can
make a preliminary assessment of how these ideas relate to personal needs. The units on this level contain
detailed explanations of small business principles, suggestions on how to find information and use
techniques, and encouragement for creating a future business. Students completing this unit should be
able to perform these competencies: (1) list their entrepreneurial skills, (2) determine what motives they
may have for starting their own businesses, (3) evaluate the different types of business opportunities that
relate to their personal entrepreneurial skills, and (4) identify the best type of business for their motives
and skills. The unit is organized into five sections. Following a preliminary section on how to use the unit
(with vocabulary and a review of the objectives for this topic on level 1), the unit's information is
presented in question-and-answer format. Individual and group activities, an assessment to be completed
with the teacher, and sources used to develop the unit follow. A list of the modules of Revised PACE,
Level 2 completes the unit. (KC)

Examining Entrepreneurial Competencies and their Relationship to

Self-Employment Intentions among Engineering Students: A Case
Study from India
Kumara, S. A. Vasantha; Kumar, Y. Vijaya

Industry and Higher Education, v24 n4 p269-278 Aug 2010

The growth of technological institutions in India has been exponential and supply has exceeded demand
in the job market. Against this background, it is a social responsibility of universities to provide
alternative career options for engineering graduates. To encourage entrepreneurship careers among
engineering graduates, the Visvesvarayya Technological University (VTU) in India introduced a
compulsory course on "Management and Entrepreneurship" for all engineering students in their pre-final
year. This paper reports on a study undertaken to identify the entrepreneurial competencies and self-
employment intentions of these pre-final year students so that appropriate training could be provided in
their final year. An Entrepreneurial Competencies Index (ECI) and a Self-Employment Intentions Index
(SEI) were developed and, by mapping the ECI with the SEI, prospective entrepreneurs were identified as
those who scored high in both competencies and intention. Using correlation coefficients and chi-square
tests of relationships, it is shown that demographics have little influence on entrepreneurial competencies.
The results of the study enable entrepreneurship educators to identify specific training needs and thus to
design a competency-based curriculum for entrepreneurship education. (Contains 17 tables.)

An Examination of Social Entrepreneurial Competencies in the Roles

of Live-in Housing Professionals
Vela, Alicia L.

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Arizona State University

With budgets on the decline, university officials are seeking alternative methods to maintain and increase
the type of services provided to students. By incorporating social entrepreneurial competencies in the
daily actions of university staff members, staff members will be able to perform their work more
effectively and help students acquire skills such as innovative thinking, which is needed in today's
society. Social entrepreneurs are defined as change agents for society; these individuals seize
opportunities missed by others, improve systems, create solutions, innovate and adapt, leverage resources
they do not control, and advocate for what they and others need to be successful (Ashoka, 2010a;
Bornstein & Davis, 2010; Dees, 1998). Universities will be more successful in respect to helping students
with a workforce of social entrepreneurs capable of leveraging resources. Through action research, this
study utilized a phenomenological perspective with both qualitative and quantitative methods of data
collection and analysis to introduce social entrepreneurial competencies to the live-in housing
professionals (pro-staff) at Arizona State University (ASU) and then examined the incorporation of the
competencies into the pro-staff's daily work. Ten current pro-staff participated in two phases of the study,
each of which consisted of surveys and workshops. Participants' responses indicated that there are five
competencies and three strengths related to social entrepreneurship that are significant to the pro-staff
position and their daily work at ASU. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the

Proposal and Validation of an Entrepreneur Competency Profile:

Implications for Education
Alda-Varas, Rodrigo; Villardon-Gallego, Lourdes; Elexpuru-Albizuri, Itziar

Electronic Journal of Research in Educational Psychology, v10 n3 p1057-1080 2012

Introduction: This research presents the validated proposal of an entrepreneur competency profile. We
analyzed the phases of the entrepreneurial process, and the functions involved in each of them, in order to
identify the tasks involved in each function/role and consequently the specific competencies of
entrepreneurs. Method: The proposal was validated in two stages, based on judgments from 6 experts
(entrepreneurs and scholars). In the first stage, according to the majority assessment of the participating
experts, we established the tasks related to each of the functions involved in phases of the entrepreneurial
process. In the second stage and using the same criteria, we analyzed the attitudes and skills involved in
each of the competencies needed to carry out each task. Results: We present a profile of the competencies
of entrepreneurial individuals, in connection with their functions and tasks. Each competency is then
described according to its constituent attitudes and skills. Conclusion: The resulting competency profile is
a fundamental tool for designing entrepreneurial training, and is in itself a first step in planning such
training, since it helps establish educational goals as well as methodological proposals in order to meet
them. (Contains 1 figure.)

Exploring the Behavioural Patterns of Entrepreneurial Learning: A

Competency Approach
Man, Thomas Wing Yan

Education & Training, v48 n5 p309-321 2006

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to empirically explore the behavioural patterns involved in
entrepreneurial learning through a conceptualization of entrepreneurial learning as a "competency".
Design/methodology/approach: Semi-structured interviews to 12 entrepreneurs were conducted with a
focus on the critical incidents in which significant learning has occurred prior to and during the
development of their businesses, based on a competency framework of entrepreneurial learning. The
learning behaviours in which these entrepreneurs exhibited during the incidents were coded. Findings:
The findings suggested that there are six behavioural patterns of entrepreneurial learning, including:
actively seeking learning opportunities; learning selectively and purposely; learning in depth; learning
continuously; improving and reflecting upon experience; and successfully transferring prior experience
into current practices. Research limitations/implications: Entrepreneurial learning is more than acquiring
experience, skills and knowledge or possessing attributes related to learning. Rather, a competent
entrepreneur needs to demonstrate a set of behavioural patterns of effective learning. Moreover, these
behavioural patterns are identifiable for the purpose of measurement. Practical implications: The
education and training for the entrepreneur can be considered from a behavioural perspective, with an
emphasis on behavioural modification of the entrepreneur's learning patterns rather than skill or
knowledge acquisition only. Also, this should be grounded upon the provision of appropriate contexts that
provide or simulate the experiences of which the entrepreneur will likely come across, so that the learning
behaviours can be stimulated. Originality/value: Studying entrepreneurial learning under a competency
framework allows us to explore the behavioural patterns and other factors involved in effective
entrepreneurial learning with a closer connection to entrepreneurial success.

How Can Teachers' Entrepreneurial Competences Be Developed? A

Collaborative Learning Perspective
Peltonen, Katariina

Education & Training, v57 n5 p492-511 2015

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of collaborative learning in the development of
teachers' entrepreneurial competences in the school context at primary, secondary and vocational levels of
education. Design/methodology/approach: The research is based on an interpretative and collaborative
learning approach to teachers' entrepreneurial competence development. The empirical work relies on
teachers' written learning reflections collected during the chosen training programme and applies an
Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method to analyze the data. Findings: The findings
demonstrate that collaborative learning can help teachers to adopt a more entrepreneurial teaching
approach. The findings highlight that social interaction and collegial support are important "drivers" for
building self-confidence, further showing that conceptual and pedagogical renewal leads to an in-depth
understanding of the work role and its meaning in society. Research limitations/implications: The study is
of an explorative nature and bound to a specific contextual setting in Finland. Therefore further empirical
research is needed to affirm the study's suggestions on the effects of other collaborative learning
interactions. Practical implications: The research findings provide new insights for teacher trainers and
policy makers on how to enhance entrepreneurial teaching competences. The study concludes with new
directions for designing and managing teacher training programmes. Originality/value: The paper
enhances the understanding of teachers' entrepreneurial competences, the role of collaborative peer
learning in this process and thus bridges the gap between teacher research and entrepreneurial competence
literature.

Originality/value: The paper
enhances the understanding of teachers' entrepreneurial competences, the role of collaborative peer
learning in this process and thus bridges the gap between teacher research and entrepreneurial competence
literature.

Attitudes of Higher Education Students to New Venture Creation: The

Relevance of Competencies and Contextual Factors
Teixeira, Aurora A. C.; Davey, Todd

Industry and Higher Education, v24 n5 p323-341 Oct 2010

Higher education institutions (HEIs) play an important role in the generation of high-tech "entrepreneurial
capacity". As entrepreneurship education gives greater attention to the creation of new ventures, there is
an urgent need for a better understanding of the attitudes of students, potentially the entrepreneurs of the
future. Logit estimates using 4,413 responses from students enrolled in Portuguese HEIs show that
students who have business-related competences and live in an environment that fosters and encourages
entrepreneurship have a stronger desire to become entrepreneurs. This supports the contention that
entrepreneurship is a process that can be learned and that HE establishments, teachers and other
institutions and individuals are in a position to encourage entrepreneurial behaviour. (Contains 10 figures,
4 tables, and 6 notes.)

Going beyond Competencies: An Exploratory Study in Defining

Exemplary Workplace Learning and Performance Practitioners
Smith, Terri Freeman

Performance Improvement Quarterly, v22 n1 p27-51 2009

This study was an exploratory investigation used to identify exemplary performance in four of the areas
of expertise (AOEs) as described in the American Society for Training and Development's "Mapping the
Future: New Workplace Learning and Performance Competencies" (2004). Qualitative data were
collected from the following four AOEs: (1) delivering training, (2) designing learning, (3) improving
human performance, and (4) measuring and evaluating. Research suggests that an exemplary performer
could have productivity differences 12 times greater than performers at the bottom of the performance
scale and 85% greater than an average performer (Hunter, Schmidt, & Judiesch, 1990). Critical incidents
were collected from behavioral event interviews of 23 exemplary performers and 9 typical performers. An
analysis of the findings suggests that an exemplary performer may hold at least four key behaviors: taking
calculated risks, entrepreneurial and visionary planning, documented business performance to support and
influence change, and political prudence and leadership savvy. (Contains 5 tables and 1 figure.)

A Qualitative Study of Characteristics, Competencies, and Strategies

of Transition Staff Working with Urban Latino
Munoz-Lorenzo, Omayra

ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Maryland, College Park

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore characteristics, competencies, and strategies of
transition program employment representatives who attain successful employment outcomes for urban
Latino/a youths with disabilities. This study employed in-depth interviewing as a method of data
collection. The central research question guiding the study was: What factors are characteristic of
employer representatives who achieved successful transition outcomes with urban youth with disabilities
who participated in a multi-site vocational intervention? In addition, the following sub-questions were
investigated: (a) Which specific characteristics and perceptions of employment representatives are
associated with successful job attainment for urban youths with disabilities? (b) What competencies of
employment representatives are associated with successful job attainment for urban Latino/a youths with
disabilities? (c) What job development strategies are associated with successful job attainment for urban
youths with disabilities? Data collection involved two main sources of information: (a) secondary
analyses of the national Bridges Program database, which includes information about employment
representatives and the outcomes they achieved for students they served; and (b) in-depth structured
individual interviews with 15 Bridges employer representatives. Participants were a diverse sample from
six different sites of the Bridges School-to-Work program. The data were analyzed using the method
developed by Thomas (2006) and similar to the Miles and Huberman (1994) steps of data reduction, data
displays, and conclusion drawing/verification. The analysis yielded nine staff-related factors influencing
successful outcomes for Latino/a youths with disabilities participating in Bridges School-to-Work
program. These categories were labeled: (a) high level of commitment, (b) instilling-hope, (c)
entrepreneurial skills, (d) cultural sensitivity (skills and knowledge), (e) awareness of youth needs and
challenges, (f) networking and relationship building, (g) teamwork, (h) on-going support, and (i) family
systems focus. This study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the staff characteristics,
competencies, and strategies associated with the successful transition outcomes for Latino/a youth with
disabilities. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.

Entrepreneurship Competencies.
Cataldo, Paul F.

Enterprise Skills Development Project for Youth (ESDPY), renamed Project EDGE (Encouraging the
Development and Growth of Entrepreneurship), is described in this report. Project EDGE is a training
program that assists youth in acquiring the entrepreneurial and life skills necessary to become successful
employees/employers in the information age. This report outlines a list of competencies in entrepreneurial
education needed to teach a semester-long class as well as a full-year class in entrepreneurship. The
expansion of the meaning of the following competency areas describes the level of performance and
recommended standards needed for a student to meet the competency: small business; entrepreneurship;
ownership; the market; locations; financing; financial records; legal requirements and government
regulations; human resources; product, service, and inventory control; advertising; organization and
management; marketing; credit; technical assistance; and business plans. Included are planned course
statements for each course and a list of competencies common to all vocational areas. These competencies
are correlated to the essential learning skills where appropriate. The ESDPY curriculum development for
Project EDGE contains the following: definitions of 5 terms; 13 bibliographic listings; 4 books; 3
periodicals; and 9 other resources. (NLA)

Predictors of Creative Achievement: Assessing the Impact of
Entrepreneurial Potential, Perfectionism, and Employee Engagement
Ahmetoglu, Gorkan; Harding, Xanthe; Akhtar, Reece; Chamorro-Premuzic, Tomas

Creativity Research Journal, v27 n2 p198-205 2015

Creativity is a key ingredient of organizational effectiveness, business innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Yet there remain substantial gaps in the literature in terms of understanding the antecedents of creative
achievement. This study investigated the effect of perfectionism, employee engagement, and
entrepreneurial potential as predictors of creative achievement. As predicted, Structural Equation
Modelling demonstrated that entrepreneurial potential was significantly and positively related to all
creative achievement outcomes. The hypothesised negative relationship between perfectionism and
creative achievement was not supported. Furthermore, no significant associations were found between
employee engagement and creative achievement. Implications are discussed in terms of the importance of
entrepreneurial potential as a determinant of creative achievements.

Identifying Student Potential for ICT Entrepreneurship Using Myers-

Briggs Personality Type Indicators
Johnston, Kevin A.; Andersen, Barry K.; Davidge-Pitts, Jennifer; Ostensen-Saunders, Mark

Journal of Information Technology Education, v8 p29-43 2009

Literature relating to personality and entrepreneurship has focused primarily on personality characteristics
of traditional entrepreneurs. The focus of this study was on personality characteristics and temperaments
of potential Information and Communication Technology (ICT) entrepreneurs. The main objective of the
study was to evaluate the efficacy of personality characteristics as identifiers of potential ICT
entrepreneurship. The personality characteristics of the participants were measured on the Keirsey
Temperament Sorter, a proven research instrument. Two entrepreneurial tests were used to determine
entrepreneurial ability. The temperament of the individuals was ascertained and compared to their
entrepreneurial ability. The population sample used for this study was comprised of third year and
honours information systems students from the University of Cape Town and current ICT entrepreneurs.
A positive relationship between the rational and idealist temperaments and potential ICT entrepreneurs
was found. No significant relationship between specific personality types and potential entrepreneurial
ability were evident in the study. A positive connection was noticed between potential ICT entrepreneurs
and being male. Unfortunately the number of female respondents was insufficient to lead to a conclusive
result. (Contains 7 figures and 1 table.)

Who Is for Community Participation? Who Is Community

Participation for? Exploring the Well-Being Potential for Involvement
in Regeneration
Evans, Melvyn

Education, Knowledge & Economy: A Journal for Education and Social Enterprise, v2 n3 p163-173 Nov
2008

Commencing from the identification of an emerging discourse in government circles expounding the
benefits of community participation, this article examines critically the claims that community
participation enhances involvement in decision making, builds social capital, reduces social exclusion,
improves public service delivery and enhances local enterprise and economic activity. In particular, the
impact of community participation upon the communities that are the focus of regeneration is explored
through a review of findings from a range of studies. Finally, alternative strategies are proposed which
build from the basis of existing activities in communities targeted for regeneration which are argued to
have more potential for promoting well-being. Such strategies involve harnessing the potential of existing
local entrepreneurial endeavour and social capital networks and resourcing their development and growth
in new ways. This draws from research by the author on social enterprise in different localities in Europe
and on the potential for the mutualisation of the informal economy. (Contains 1 note.)

To introduce you to entrepreneurial motivation.

Read the text below or click on the 'play' button to listen to the audio.
ENTREPRENEURIAL MOTIVATION

As stated earlier, entrepreneurial decisions are ultimately personal decisions. The first step in your own
entrepreneurial process is to assess your entrepreneurial motivation. A 'motive' is something that causes you to
act. There could be many elements that drive (or reduce) your motivation for participating in entrepreneurial
activities. To help you assess this, we're going to break the question into different parts for you to consider.
First, there is a difference between 'intent' and 'motivation.' Research suggests that many academic
entrepreneurs never intended to become entrepreneurs. Some chose entrepreneurship because it was the only
option left to commercialise an innovation; others fell into it almost by accident. But all (or nearly all) were
strongly motivated by some underlying force or drive. Nearly all wanted to see their invention commercialised,
whether or not that process led to fame or fortune. Some sought humanitarian or social benefits, while others
simply wanted to improve an industry or business.

There is also a difference between 'capacity' and 'motivation'. Unfortunately, we are unaware of any effective
test for entrepreneurial capacity. We'll talk later about whether entrepreneurs are 'born' or 'made', but the
bottom line appears to be that the only way to test entrepreneurial capacity is to put an individual in an
entrepreneurial environment and see what happens.

A critical distinction can be drawn between intrinsic and extrinsic sources of motivation. Extrinsic motivation is
imposed from external sources such as peer influence or institutional pressures. Many people, including
researchers are motivated by the need to be appreciated, recognised, and rewarded by external sources.
Publications, research grants, tenure and academic awards are all example of extrinsic goals that motivate
researchers.

Intrinsic motivation includes the aspirations, dreams, and goals that people generate internally. One intrinsic
motivating force is survival, perhaps best represented in the commercial realm by the need to make money. A
second motivating force is the desire to make a difference, either by individual effort or as part of a larger
cause. A third motivating force is the general desire to feel pleasure and to participate in pleasurable
experiences. Some motivations can present both intrinsic and extrinsic elements. For example, people need to
make money to maintain a minimum living, but some people are driven to make a fortune to satisfy extrinsic
motivation of peer admiration.

All of these may be relevant to deciding your interest in entrepreneurship. Our research suggests that financial
considerations are not the primary driver for academic researchers who take on entrepreneurial activities. In
addition, most stress how difficult and often frustrating the process can be. And it is very important to note that
the majority of technology ventures are not successful.

On the other hand, entrepreneurship is a transformative experience, especially for academics who are trained
to be reflective and to see larger trends. Many academic entrepreneurs reflect positively on the learning and
fulfilment of entrepreneurial activities, regardless of the success of the venture itself.

As we've noted, entrepreneurial journeys tend to be highly idiosyncratic. Each venture is different, and each
entrepreneur is different, so it's not possible to predict in advance the outcome or the effect on the individual.
There are patterns and commonalities, as we discuss entrepreneurial processes, characteristics, and
outcomes, we'll point those out so you can consider parallels and contrasts with our examples. Most of our
examples will focus on science and technology-related opportunities, in particular because those tend to
involve the technology transfer office. Everything we discuss should be relevant to non-technology ventures

Entrepreneurial motivation
Learning outcomes:
Completing this screen will introduce you to some common motives behind academic entrepreneurship.

As stated at the beginning of this course, entrepreneurial decisions are ultimately personal decisions. In this
section, we will look at what drives entrepreneurial activity.

Many academic entrepreneurs never intended to become entrepreneurs. Some chose entrepreneurship
because it was the only option left to commercialise an innovation; others fell into it almost by accident.
However, nearly all were strongly motivated to see their invention commercialised, by some underlying force
or drive.

The first step in your own entrepreneurial process is to assess your entrepreneurial motivation. A 'motive' is
something that causes you to act, and there could be many elements that drive (or reduce) your motivation for
participating in entrepreneurial activities.

Extrinsic and intrinsic motivation

Motivation can be divided into two categories – extrinsic and intrinsic.

• Extrinsic motivation is imposed from external sources such as peer influence or institutional pressures. Many
people, including researchers, are motivated by the need to be appreciated, recognised and rewarded by external
sources.

• Intrinsic motivation includes the aspirations, dreams and goals that people generate internally.

Some motives can be said to be both extrinsic and intrinsic. For example, the desire to make money could be
to maintain a minimum standard of living, or to achieve admiration and status in the eyes of others. The next
activity will develop your understanding of the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation.

The following activity presents some examples of different motivating forces. In each case, click on the
example at the top and then click on the appropriate column according to whether you think it is an example of
an extrinsic or an intrinsic motivating force.
Start

All of the examples in the previous activity may be relevant to deciding your interest in entrepreneurship. In
our experience, financial considerations are not the primary driver for academic researchers who take on
entrepreneurial activities.

You may wish to undertake the 'Portfolio activity' to the right to help you reflect on what might motivate you to
become an academic entrepreneur.

A note on success
It should be noted that no matter how strongly motivated an individual is, this cannot guarantee the success of
an entrepreneurial venture. Indeed, as we will see later in this module, the majority of technology ventures are
not successful. In the next module, we will look at the key competencies and attributes which help to make
effective entrepreneurs, but the bottom line appears to be that the only way to test entrepreneurial capacity is
to put an individual in an entrepreneurial environment and see what happens.

Whatever the outcome, entrepreneurship is a transformative experience, and many academic entrepreneurs
reflect positively on the learning and fulfilment of entrepreneurial activities, regardless of the success of the
venture itself.
