CHL Unit 1 Task 1 RV

Francois Damba, the head of SCILaid's operations in Betaland, has assigned the new Logistics Officer four tasks to familiarize themselves with SCILaid's humanitarian aid mission and activities. SCILaid is providing emergency relief aid to 60,000 refugees who have fled violence in the neighboring country of Alphaland. Their aid includes food distribution, shelter construction, and other health and sanitation services across three refugee camps. The officer must understand why SCILaid is operating in Betaland, what phase of emergency response they are in, how their activities achieve the organization's goals of multisector emergency relief, and how their work supports SCILaid's mission.

RE: UNIT 1 - TASK 1 – ANALYSIS OF THE OPERATION IN BETALAND

Welcome to SCILaid and to Betaland.

You have arrived just in time as your predecessor, Jake Mulryan, left a short time ago and we
certainly need a Logistics Officer here on the ground.

I know that you are new to the SCILaid Organisation and I need to know that you understand
our Operation and our reasons for being here. Therefore, my first few tasks will be asking you
to familiarise yourself with these and the concepts of Humanitarian Aid.

1. Why is there a Humanitarian Aid Operation taking place in Betaland? There is an influx
of refugees coming in from Alphaland, due to the extreme violence that is going on in
Alphaland.

2. What type of aid situation is it and what phase is the operation currently in? What
modality is being used and are there benefits to this type of modality during this phase
of the operation? It is a humanitarian aid situation, aiming to provide immediate relief
from their suffering. The operation is currently in the emergency relief phase.

3. From the meetings with Nicholas Adrinkrah and Stephanie Delbaere, can you please
write a brief statement that summarises the mission and activities of SCILaid as an Aid
Organisation? SCILaids mission centers on emergency response activities through
multisectoral interventions in Relief distribution, Health, Nutrition, Water & Sanitation
and Shelter through construction programs. This is achieved through laying down
systems, procedures and mechanisms that ensure adequate support to and seamless
integration of all departments and programs in the organization in order to achieve its
goals.

4. How are SCILaid’s activities in Betaland supporting its organisational mission? SCILaid
has distributed to 60,000 refugees in the 3 camps of Bagor (12,000), Nator (13,000)
and Parna (35,000). Apart from food distribution at the beginning of the influx they also
had a program on shelter before it stopped after the influx stopped.

Regards

Francois
