PROBLEM NO. 1 TOTAL PROBABILITY THEOREM & BAYES’S RULE Marks: 03

A box has three drawers; one contains two gold coins, one contains two silver coins, and remaining one contains one
gold coin and one silver coin. Assume that one drawer is selected randomly and that a randomly selected coin from that
drawer turns out to be gold.

 What is the probability that the chosen drawer contains two gold coins?

PROBLEM NO. 2 PDF AND EXPECTED VALUE OF A FUNCTION OF RV Marks: 06

Let Θ be uniformly distributed on [0, 𝜋], and let the RVs 𝑋 and 𝑌 be defined by 𝑋 = cos⁡(Θ) and 𝑌 = sin(Θ).

 Plot the PDF of RV Θ i.e., 𝑓Θ (𝜃).

 Compute and plot the PDFs of RV 𝑋 i.e., 𝑓X (𝑥).
 Compute 𝐸[𝑋] once using 𝑓X (𝑥) and then once using 𝑓Θ (𝜃).
 Compute and plot the PDFs of RV 𝑌 i.e., 𝑓Y (𝑦).
 Compute 𝐸[𝑌] once using 𝑓Y (𝑦) and then once using 𝑓Θ (𝜃).
 Determine whether RVs 𝑋 and 𝑌 are correlated or uncorrelated?

PROBLEM NO. 4 CENTRAL LIMIT THEOREM Marks: 03

 A coin has the probability of landing on a head equal to ¼ and is flipped 2000 times. Find the probability that the
total number of heads lies between 480 and 520.

 An orange grove produces oranges whose weights are uniformly distributed between 3 and 7 ounces. If a truck can
hold 4000 lbs. of oranges, what is the approximated probability that it can carry 15,000 oranges? Hint: 1 lb. = 16 oz.

 A sleeping pill is effective for 75% of the population. If in a hospital 160 patients are given a sleeping pill, what is
the approximate probability that 125 or more of them will sleep better?
