Sublimation - LAB REPORT

The researchers conducted an experiment to purify benzoic acid through sublimation, which involves changing a solid directly into a vapor without passing through a liquid phase. They determined the purity by measuring the melting point, which was slightly lower than expected, indicating the presence of an impurity. Weighing was done before and after to calculate a 4% recovery rate of the purified sample.

Discussion

The researchers have conducted an experiment, specifically the purification of benzoic acid
(sample) through the process of sublimation, where in some solid passes directly into the vapor
phase without going through the liquid phase and is used to purify solid mixtures. The
vaporization-solidification process of the sample was used as the purification process. Melting
point determination was conducted to ascertain the purity of the sample.

After the execution of the experiment, the researchers conducted a series of weighing. First,
the weight of the sample followed by the weight of the empty watch glass, and the weight of the
watch glass. The weight of the sublimate itself was attained by the subtraction of both the weight
of the watch glass and sublimate as well as the weight of the empty watch glass. The researchers
computed for the percentage recovery and have obtained a 4% percentage recovery. The
sublimate was placed inside a capillary tube closed at one end then subjected to an oil bath. The
sublimate started to melt at the temperature of 120℃ and completely dissolved at the temperature
of 121℃.

The researchers therefore conclude that the benzoic acid was impure despite the
purification process based on pure benzoic acid having a standard boiling point of 122.4℃. The
cause is possibly the presence of an impurity which causes an organic compound’s melting point
deviate from the standard melting point.
