BA - CF series
The BA and CF series consist of three phase, asynchronous brake motors with the braking assembly powered by alternating
current. On request, these series can be furnished with a direct current braking assembly, with the rectifier mounted inside
the terminal board box. The rectifier is supplied with an over-voltage safety protector and radio frequency emission protection.
The BA series has motor shaft heights between 71 mm and 112 mm. The CF series has shaft heights between 132 mm and
200 mm. All BA and CF series motors are provided with manual brake release. The cooling fan for the BA and CF series is
located between the motor and the braking assembly. The brake moving element and the brake coil have a laminated magnetic
nucleus to reduce losses and to allow very fast braking. The salient characteristics of the BA and CF series motors are a very
reduced time of braking reaction, both in unlocked and high torque braking, the constant braking time, and the capability to
handle a very high frequency work load cycle.
BM series
The BM series consists of three phase, asynchronous brake motors with the braking assembly powered by direct current and motor
shaft heights between 63 mm and 100 mm.
The brake assembly is powered by a rectifier mounted inside the terminal board box. The rectifier is supplied with an over-voltage
safety protector and radio frequency emission protection. The cooling fan is located at the back of the motor. The salient
characteristics of the BM motors series are low noise during braking, the gradual acceleration during starting and stopping of
the motor, and the notable compactness in size.
The BA, CF, and BM series are also available in the following versions:
PV (BAPV, CFPV, BMPV) that allow progressive starting and stopping, particularly suitable for translation movements.
F (CFF) with double brake disks and extremely high braking torque
SV (BASV, CFSV, BMSV) with forced ventilation.

motor designation
To be able to identify correctly an MGM brake motor, the following characteristics must be noted:

the braking assembly supply voltage will be the same as the motor voltage. For direct current braking assemblies, the supply
voltage will be 230 V 50/60 Hz, unless specified otherwise.

The choice of direct current or alternating current brake is possible only for the motors belonging to BA and CF series. For the
BM series, the brake is only available with direct current. The rectifier with emission suppression is furnished as standard on direct
current brake motors with power supply higher than 24 volts.

Single speed motors can be supplied with a single terminal board box, with the motor power supply and brake power supply in
parallel, or with a double terminal board box, having the power supply of the motor separate from that of the brake. Unless
requested otherwise, single speed motors are furnished with one terminal board box. On two speed motors, the power supply to
the motor is always separate from that of the brake. On single speed motors with supply voltage to the motor different from that
to the brake, the double terminal board box is supplied.

MGM brake motors have the CE mark on the nameplate to declare the conformity to the requirements of 73/23 EEC “Low voltage
directive” and 89/336 EEC “Electromagnetic compatibility directive”, with their subsequently amendments EEC 92/31 and 93/68 EEC.
On request are available brake motors made in conformity with requirements of standards UL 1004 “Electric motors” and CSA
C 22.2 No. 100-95 “Motors and generators” (file LR112981).

The choice of protection degree for a motor should be appropriate to the ambient conditions in which it will operate. According
to the provisions of the IEC34-5 (EN 60034-5) standards the designation of the protection degree is by means of a symbol
composed of the letters IP followed by two numbers. The first number indicates the protection degree provided by the motor
enclosure in contact with parts in motion, electrically energized, or against the penetration of foreign bodies. The second
number indicates the protection degree of the motor enclosure against damaging effects due to the penetration of liquids.

MGM brake motors are manufactured with IP54 protection degree as standard. On request, it is possible to have motor
protection degree IP55 or IP56. For use in normal industrial environments IP54 is sufficient. For motors applied outside or
in contact with water, protection degree IP55 or IP56 is advisable, and above all, using additional protection is suggested.
BA and CF series motors do not require a rain protecting roof when mounted vertically. At the time of installation ensure the
correct insertion of wiring entrance adapters and loop the wire from below upwards, when possible.

synthetic rubber with high resistance to oils and wear.

The nominal bearings lifetime is calculated in working hours according to international bearings lifetime
calculations, and is depending on the applied load, temperature and speed. For the different lifetimes
at different speeds the maximum allowed overhung load (N) acting at the middle of the output shaft
(F in the sketch), can be obtained from the table below for every motor frame size.

Motors with brake coil supplied by direct current are furnished as standard with the rectifier mounted on the inside of
the terminal board box. Rectifiers are supplied with an over-voltage safety protector and radio frequency emission
protection. In the figure below are shown the various types of rectifiers mounted on MGM motors. Type M is furnished
for mounting on the electrical panel. On every rectifier it is possible to choose between two speeds of brake intervention
(see pages 22 and 39).

voltage and frequency supply
All MGM motors are designed to be powered by “European Voltages” as standard: 230/400V±10% 50 Hz (IEC 38, CENELEC
HD 472, CEI 8-6). Upon request they can be designed to function for different voltages and/or frequencies. All motors are
nameplated with their voltage and functional characteristics at 50 Hz and corresponding voltage at 60 Hz (see paragraph on
motor nameplates). MGM motors can operate in a voltage supply range of no more than 10% respect to the nominal one. In
the table below you can realize in the first column the main voltage at 50 Hz, in the second one the equivalent voltage at
60 Hz and in the last one (usable voltages) the voltage to which motors can also operate. For different voltages from those
stated below and for more informations, please contact MGM technical dept.

If the motors are running with an heavy duty, you have to 120

BA, CF, BM series motors with supply voltage on the nameplate shown as 230/400V 50Hz and 277/480V 60Hz maintain
the same starting and nominal torque and current values going from 230/400V 50Hz to 277/480V 60Hz. RPM increases
of about 20% (as seen when comparing curves 1 and 2 in the figure below). The brake coil powered by alternating current
for motor BA and CF series with nameplate voltage 230/400V 50Hz and 277/480V 60Hz (unless the brake power supply
is noted otherwise) can function equally well at 230/400V 50Hz or at 277/480V 60Hz. The brake coil powered by direct
current for motor BA, CF, and BM series with nameplate voltage 230V or 400V (D.C. BRAKE 230V; D.C. BRAKE 400V) must
be powered in the first case at 230V, 50Hz or 60Hz, and in the second case at 400V 50Hz or 60 Hz.
MGM has designed special windings for motors and brake coil for 220/380V 60Hz power supply. It is not advisable to use
motors designed for 230/400V 50Hz supply and 277/480V 60Hz on 220/380V 60Hz networks, even though the power
remains the same, since the starting torque is reduced by 35% (see curves 1 and 3 in the figure below).
The brake coil supplied by 230/400V 50Hz and 277/480V 60Hz alternating current should not be used on 220/380V 60Hz
supply for the BA and CF series because there would be a significant reduction in performance.
The brake coil with direct current power supply of 230V 50Hz can be used with 220V 60Hz, those with power supply of
400V 50Hz at 380V 60Hz. In the graph below can be seen the variation of torque/RPM for a motor nameplated 230/400V
50Hz and 277/480V 60Hz for different applied voltages.

It is important to observe that the maximum number of starts when changing from 50Hz to 60Hz reduces by about 15-20%, and
that the noise level increases of about 3dB due to the increased speed of the cooling fan.

operations with inverters
All MGM motors are manufactured to run correctly with inverters. Following are some suggestions for those who plan to use
MGM brake motors controlled by an inverter.
When a motor runs continuously at low RPM’s, the cooling fan of the motor, also running more slowly, can result in a higher
motor winding operating temperature, reaching a dangerous level. In any case, if the motor must run at low RPM’s for long periods,
it is advisable to use motors with auxiliary cooling (SV series, with additional cooling fans).
The conditions above which auxiliary cooling is necessary vary according to the type of motor, the applied load, and the work
cycle foreseen. Roughly, whenever the motor must operate below 35Hz for long periods, a motor with auxiliary cooling should
be selected. In addition, it is advisable to use a temperature sensor to reveal the operating temperature. For further information,
please contact MGM Motori Elettrici S.p.A. directly.
For motors to be used with inverters, the brake should be powered separately from the motor itself, to ensure proper functioning
of the brake coil. Therefore, the double terminal board box should be requested. For motors using alternating current, it is also
advisable to use a safety cutout (MGM type RC04) on the power supply to the brake coil.
The starting torque of a motor using an inverter is different than that of a motor connected across line. When selecting the inverter
be sure that its characteristics are adequate for the load of the machine for which it is used.

The interference generated by electronic power apparat such as inverters, can influence equipment sensitive to such interference,
such as computers, load cells, photocells, temperature regulators, magnetic intrusion switches, or capacitance earthing circuits,
and control wiring.
Whenever it is necessary to reduce the interference caused by the functioning of inverter controlled motors the following practical
suggestions should be implemented.
Disturbances are highest nearby the inverter, and can be attenuated by increasing the distance. Sensitive devices should be kept
at least 50 cm from the frequency converter. Keep power wiring at least 50 cm away from control wiring. Use power wiring as
short as possible. Power wiring longer than 10 m is a strong source of disturbances, and can cause possible malfunctions. A
disturbance filter may be necessary to on the power supply.
Information on the correct wiring of the inverter to the motor should be obtained from the inverter manufacturer.

vibrations
Balancing
MGM brake motors are balanced with an half key applied to the motor shaft ends, according to the norm IEC 34-14 (CENELEC
HD-53.14S1, CEI 2-23). Reducing vibrations is important both to avoid motor damage, especially to the bearings, and to
avoid damage to the machinery to which the motor is coupled. It is appropriate, therefore, to balance the parts of the attached
machinery (the coupling, the pulleys, etc.) in order to avoid vibrations.
The maximum allowable vibration intensities for different shaft heights, according to the norm IEC 34-14, can be seen in the
table below. Motors are supplied as standard balanced to normal class, upon request they can be supplied to reduced class
or special.
Noise
The noise during the working of electric motors is produced by the magnetic field, the bearings and the cooling system.
The highest noise level is produced by the cooling fan. Technical data sheets report the values of the sound pressure in dB (A)
in accordance to ISO 1680. For motors working at 60 Hz the above mentioned values should be increased of about 3-4 dB. On
request we can supply motors with low noise levels. During the braking action the noise level depends on the air gap (distance
between the brake coil and the brake moving element). Periodic air gap adjustment provides lower noise levels.

temperature, altitudine, humidity
The standard electrical specifications of the motors are refered to a continuous duty (S1) with nominal voltage, nominal
frequency (50 to 60 Hz), an ambient temperature of max 40 °C and installation altitude up to 1000 m. above sea level.
If ambient temperature is higher than 40 °C the output powers should be reduced as percentage of the rated value as from
the table below.

When ambient temperatures are higher than 60 °C or lower than -30 °C please contact MGM. If the motor is installed at altitude
higher than 1000 m. above sea level, the table below shows the permissible output power as percentage of the rated value.
Whenever the motors are to be used in areas where the temperature is less than -15 °C, in high humidity, or where there are abrupt
temperature changes, it is advisable to use anti-condensation heaters. This recommendation is particularly important when there
will be long pauses in the work cycle, that would produce abundant condensation on the motor windings. This could permeate
the windings and cause short circuiting. This phenomenon occurs most often with larger motors, that have more air volume within,
allowing more humidity to condense. The anti-condensation heaters are inserted in the heads of the windings in order to increase
their temperature and prevent the formation of condensate.
For the MGM product range there are three different types suitable for the motor power. The wiring leads of the heaters are
connected to the appropriate terminals of the terminal board box located in the terminal board box. In position 9 of the motor
nameplate (see the paragraph on motor nameplates) the anti-condensation heaters supply is indicated by the letters “SCALD”
followed by the supply voltage required. The heaters must not be energized during motor operation.
A further protection is the provision of drain holes located in the lower part of the motor housing, that allow the discharge of water
which may form inside it. It is necessary to specify on the order the mounting position to ensure that these are properly located.
MGM motors have, as standard, their stator windings and brake coil treated for functioning in tropical environments. However,
for all motors foreseen to be installed in high humidity areas, a specific tropicalization treatment can be requested.
Whenever BM series motors with shaft position down are to be used outside, or in the presence of water spray, the rain protecting
roof should be requested. This is positioned above the fan cover, and protects the motor from foreign particles, without obstructing
the flow of cooling air. For motors from the BA and CF series it is not necessary to use this component, as the closed construction
of the braking assembly blocks water entry. For motors to be used in areas of high humidity or which will experience long periods,
to avoid locking of the brake disc to the braking surface, it is advisable to request the anti-stick treatment “type GML”.

During the installation, the motor should be provided with devices to prevent abnormal working conditions. We suggest to
provide the feeding - circuit for the low speed motors with varistors to avoid the destruction of the windings due to high
voltage peaks during the switch on and of operations. If overloads are imposed for long periods of time, or dangers of jamming
could occur then cutouts, torque limiters or other similar devices should be fitted.
The table below shows for the most frequent inconveniences the advised protection devices.

On request we can supply motors equipped with thermistors PTC or bimetallic N.C.:
Bimetallic thermal protectors (N.C.): three bimetallic sensors in series with normally closed contacts, inserted in the windings
heads. When approaching dangerous temperature levels, they control a contactor (not furnished with the motor) that interrupts
the power supply. The nominal voltage and current are 250 V and 2,5 Ampere A.C. respectively. The contact closes again with a
reduction of temperature of at least 35 °C. Its terminals are connected to a terminal board located in the terminal board box.
Thermistors (PTC): three thermistors in series (conforming to DIN standards 44081 and 44802), inserted in the windings heads.
The resistance of the thermistors varies with temperature, and when approaching the nominal intervention temperature the rapid
variation of the resistance guarantees a highly precise level of protection.
The thermistor only senses the temperature, a safety cutout (not furnished with the motor), must be added to interrupt the power
supply to the motor. The maximum operating voltage is 30 V D.C. Its terminals are connected to a terminal board located in the
terminal board box.
High polarity motors: when starting motors having a high number of poles (f.e. 8, 12, 16), emission peaks can be generated,
that can damage insulating materials and contacts. It is advisable in these cases to install safety protection against over-voltage.
Upon request, MGM can furnish safety devices of the type RC04, for motors up to 4 kW, and type RC10, for motors up to 10
kW. These safeties should not be installed if the motor is controlled by an inverter.
Brake coil: the D.C. brake coil are supplied on standard basis with a rectifier having a safety protection against over-voltage and
a filter against the radio frequency emissions. The A.C. brake coil doesn’t need generally these kind of protection devices, however,
in the case of a very high number of starts/stops, or in bad electrical line situation, the use of the RC04 filter is suggested to
limit the electrical interference of the brake coil.

general characteristics
BA - CF series
BA and CF series motors are asynchronous, three phase, self-braking. The motor brakes in case of power supply failure. The
braking action is obtained without axial sliding of the shaft and provides equal braking torque in both directions of rotation. The
braking assembly is powered by alternating current, with the possibility of combined or separate power supplies to the motor and
brake. Upon request the same type of brake assembly can be supplied for direct current, with the rectifier mounted inside the
terminal board box. The rectifier is provided with safety protective devices against over-voltage and the emission of radio
frequencies. BA and CF series motors tolerate a high degree of overloading and have a high capability to withstand overheating,
that guarantees high reliability, also under severe operating conditions. All the series has been designed to be controlled by
inverters. The motor winding insulation material used is class F, with the availability of class H, upon request. Motor construction
type is totally enclosed, with external cooling, and IP54 protection degree (IP55 and IP56 available on request). Motors with shaft
heights up to 132 mm are furnished as standard with a hexagonal hole on the shaft end in the back, that allows manual rotation,
even with the power off. An hand release of the brake is furnished as standard for the entire product range.
The brake disc of the BA and CF series, thanks to the construction of the motor, has a large lining surface, that allows high braking
torque and the possibility of adjusting the air gap during maintenance, at long intervals. The lining of the surface on the motor side
is self-ventilating, allowing a high braking workload and a constant braking time. The brake lining material is asbestos free. The
motor frame for the BA series is die cast, light metal. The terminal board box is complete with cable glands and plugs and is
positioned 180° above the motor support feet. The shields and the flanges are manufactured of aluminum on motors up to 90
frame size, and in cast iron for the motor shaft heights 100 and 112 mm. The frame, the shields and the flanges of the CF series
are in cast iron. The construction type IM B3, for both BA and CF series, has integral support feet not attached to the frame, giving
to the structure a notable robustness, that is particularly important for brake motors.
Both on the BA and CF series, the rear cover (brake surface) and the brake moving element are in cast iron. The brake moving
element and brake coil have a laminated nucleus to reduce electrical losses to a minimum, and ensure an extremely rapid brake
intervention. Important characteristics of the BA and CF series are, therefore, a particularly robust construction, a very short braking
reaction time both in application and release, a high and constant braking torque, fundamental to ensure precision in positioning,
the capability to handle frequent and heavy load braking cycles, longer intervals between air gap adjustment, a very simple
construction that facilitates any required adjustments.

BA-CF brake group
The air gap 60 i.e. the distance between the 2 magnetics cores, brake coil 25 and 18 20 21
brake moving element 24 , must be 2-4 tenths of a millimeter. It is unadvisable to
exceed 0,6÷0,7 mm for A.C. brake and 0,5 mm for D.C. brake, in order to avoid
vibrations of the brake moving element and, probably, the burning of the brake coil. It 19 22
is advisable to check periodically the air gap, because by the wear of the brake disc

linings, it tends to increase. In order to set the air gap back to the required value, operate
on the nut 21 to obtain the brake coil’s forward displacement towards the brake moving
element. When this operation has been settled, the locknut 22 should be tightened.

As standard all the BA - CF serie-motors are supplied with an A.C. brake. On WHITE
request the D.C. brake is available with the rectifier located inside the terminal WHITE
box. The rectifier is provided with protection devices against overvoltage and with RED

The standard supply voltage is 230/400V 50Hz for A.C. brake and 230V 50-60Hz

variation in braking torque as a function of the springs compression
BA and CF series motors are supplied with braking torque equal to about 60 - 70% in respect to the maximum value indicated
on the motor nameplate. Whenever a motor is required having a specific braking torque it is possible to request this on the
order. In the graphs below, the variation of the braking torque is shown as a function of the braking assembly spring compression.
The values shown refer to motors mounted with their shafts in the horizontal position. They are valid for motors belonging
to the BA and CF series with the brake supplied with alternating current. For brakes supplied with direct current, even though
they display the same trend, have lower braking torque’s, as shown in the table below.
The values shown in the graphs are only indicative because application conditions, brake lining wear and temperature, influence
the actual braking torque to a determined value. Whenever it is necessary to adjust the braking torque to a specific value it
is advisable to verify directly the measurement of the braking torque obtained.
For low measured values, the motor mounting position influences slightly the resulting braking torque. For further information
please contact MGM directly.

brake linings wear, starting and braking time
Brake linings wear is influenced principally by the environmental conditions in which the motor operates, by the frequency of
starts, the loading of each braking action, and the braking torque. The temperature of the lining increases with the increase in
number of braking actions and the moment of inertia applied by the motor. When the temperature of the lining strip is high,
the wear increases and the braking time is longer. For this reason the BA and CF series are designed to have continuous cooling
of the braking surfaces.
Roughly, the life of the brake linings can be expressed by the number of braking actions and can be calculated as follows:
n = Wtot / Wf
where Wf (J) is the work done during each braking action and Wtot (J) is obtained from the table for each type of brake motor. It
is advisable, however, to check periodically the state of brake disc wear and replace the brake disc before they are completely
worn. If you want to estimate the interval between two successive air gap adjustment in a specific application, note that the brake
linings wear is greater than normal (during the first thousands of brake application).
For the PV series the value Wtot found in the table must be multiplied by 0.5 and the moment of inertia added by the presence
of flywheels must be considered in the calculation.
The indicative number of brake applications Nint that a brake motor supplied by alternating current can achieve between two
successive air gap adjustment is given by the following formula:
Nint = Er / Wf
For motors with DC brake, the value Nint obtained must be further multiplied by 0,65. For BM serie-motor the value Er is
shown in the table on page 39. To calculate the number of brake applications use the preceding formula with the correction
value 0,65.
Starting current for an asynchronous motor is always much higher than the nominal current. When the starting time is excessively
long, there are electromechanical disturbances and higher temperatures on winding, damaging the motor. For information on
maximum starting time allowed for each type of motor, please contact MGM.
An indicative value for starting time ta (expressed in seconds) and the angle of rotation ϕa (expressed in radians) can be obtained
from the following expression:

general characteristics
BM series
The BM series consist of three phase, asynchronous brake motors with the braking assembly powered by direct current, and shaft
heights between 63 mm and 100 mm. The braking assembly is powered by a rectifier mounted inside the terminal board box. The
rectifier is supplied with an over-voltage safety protector and radio frequency emission protection. It is possible to select the brake
reaction time by choosing one of two rectifier wiring methods. The motor brakes in case of power supply failure. The braking action
is obtained without axial sliding of the shaft and provides equal braking torque in both directions of rotation. The braking assembly is
designed with special features making it particularly quiet during stops. BM series motors tolerate a high degree of overloading and
have a high capability to withstand overheating, that guarantees high reliability, also under severe operating conditions. All the motors
of the BM series have been designed to be controlled by inverters.
The motor winding insulation material used is Class F, with the availability of Class H, upon request. Motor construction type is totally
enclosed, with external cooling, and IP54 protection degree (IP55 and IP56 available upon request).
BM series motors can be rotated manually, thanks to a hexagonal hole built in the shaft end. An hand release of the brake is furnished
as standard. The brake lining material is asbestos free and is formulated to guarantee a high braking friction coefficient and a long
life. The motor enclosure is constructed of a light alloy casting.
The construction form IM B3, has integral support feet not inserted on the frame; this solution guarantees a notable robustness brake
to the structure, particularly important for brake motors. The terminal board box, complete with gable glandes and plugs is located
180° in respect to the feet. Shields and flanges are in aluminum for motors with shaft heights up to 90 mm, and in cast iron for motors
100 frame size.
Salient characteristics of the motor BM series are a robust construction, an extremely silent functioning, the gradual braking action
and motor starting, and a notable compactness in dimensions.

BM brake group
General information
BM series brake motors are equipped with a D.C. brake coil. Power is supplied through a rectifier mounted in the terminal board
box (standard supply voltage 230 V A.C. 50/60 Hz). The braking action is obtained without axial sliding of the shaft, the braking
action is equally powerful on both directions of rotation.
The braking torque can be set up to a max value indicated on the namaplate operating on adjustable springs 78 or otherwise, if
the brake group is equipped with fixed springs, taking the central springs away or changing the type of springs. BM series brake
motors are prearranged for manual rotation by means of a hexagonal tool that can be fitted in a hexagonal hole in rotor shaft end
in the back (Reg. patent). On request hand lever is available for manual release.
The existing air gap 60 between moving element 74 and the brake 60 76
coil 75 should be set back to the initial value of 0.2 mm when this,
by the wear of the brake disc, increases up to 0.6 ~ 0.8 mm. This is
done by releasing the connecting screws 77 and adjusting the fixing
screws 79 for the forward displacement of the brake coil 75 . 78
After obtaining this constant air gap (0.2 mm) with all the 3 fixing
screws, operate again on the connecting screws 77 in the opposite 71
way to lock the brake coil in this new position.

table below are shown the braking intervention and reaction times. Motors are supplied as standard with the braking system wired
according to diagram A. To obtain a more rapid reaction time, the wiring should be changed to diagram B.

motors for translation movements with progressive start and stop
The motion of translation creates the problem of a soft starting and of a progressive braking without shocks to avoid swaying
of suspended loads and slipping on the rails or breaking of particular mechanisms. This progression is usually obtained by
applying clutches or hydraulic couplings to the motor or using slipring motors. Experience has shown that in almost every
case the brake motor in PV execution is a valid substitute of the couplings and of the slipring motor. The progressive action
is obtained by increasing the moment of inertia (J) with the application, inside the motor, of a flywheel which is exactly
calculated in its dimensions and weight, which controls the maximum torque in connection with the static torque. At the start
the flywheel absorbs energy and gives it back at the moment of the braking, producing progressive changes of the rotating
speed. The brake motor of PV series does require neither adjustments with load change nor particular maintenance, and the
action of progression is directly proportional to the load increase. During the planning it is, of course, necessary to avoid
the application of motors with insufficient power (danger of an excessive heating) and also the application of too powerful
motors which would reduce the effect of the progression.
The presence of the flywheel, which is incorporated does not hinder starts in rapid sequence (positioning of loads) provided
that these starts are not too extended, because it is equipped with a special rotor that allows lower starting current. In order
to obtain a progressive braking action the braking torque of motors of the BAPV - CFPV series has been reduced to about
half of the corresponding values of motors of the BA - CF series.
The braking torque of the motors of the BM and BMPV series is the same. The progressive starting is obtained for BAPV and
CFPV motors with a flywheel rigidly fitted on the motor shaft; for BMPV motors it is used a cast-iron cooling fan in substitution
of the thermoplastic one.
The brake motors with PV execution have the following features in common with all M.G.M. brake motors:
- possibility of a separate brake control,
- possibility of a manual brake release,
- no influence on mounting position of the motor (vertical, horizontal fitting, ect.)
- possibility of two speeds.
In the table below are shown the added moment of inertia (Kgm2) for BA - CF - BM series.

To calculate the total moment of inertia of a motor in PV execution it is necessary to add the moment of inertia of the selected
motor (see table technical data) with the moment of inertia of the flywheel.
In the table below are shown the maximum braking torque (Nm) for BMPV, BAPV, CFPV motors. For BAPV or CFPV motors it is
possible to choose between A.C, and D.C. brake.

brake motors with very high braking torque
The CFF series brake motors are used when a very high braking torque is needed. There are some applications where the
applied load on shaft end is very high and which must not produce any shaft rotation when the motor is in stand-by position.
In this case a very high static braking torque is needed and it is reached by a brake motors with double brake disc (CFF
series). The brake coil is fed with A.C.
On the table below is shown the maximum braking torque obtained on CFF brake motors. Frame sizes avaible are from 112
’till 200 included.

hoisting motors
The MGM hoisting brake motors, owing to the type of application which they are destinated to, have some different components
respect to the standard version. The type of the rotor used on hoisting motors allows to obtain for all the single speed brake
motors and for a lot of the double speed ones, an increase of about 20% of the starting torque and a decrease of about 10%
of the starting current. The brake coil for this kind of motors is the AC type.
The construction form IM B3 (as for the standard version) has integral support feet not inserted on the frame; this solution
guarantees a notable robustness to the structure particularly important for this kind of application. The shields and the flanges
are made in aluminium for motors with shaft heights up to 90 mm, and in cast iron for motors with shaft heights 100÷200
mm. The frame is made in cast iron for motors size 132÷200.

brake motors with additional cooling fans
Brake motors in particular conditions of work as for drives at variable speed with inverter and/or for heavy starting cycles
need and independent cooling fan. The motor BA and CF series are equipped with two independent cooling fans fixed on
both sides in the stator housing.
In the case that auxiliary cooling is used to limit the operating temperature in an application having high starts/stops frequency,
it should be noted that the efficiency of the auxiliary ventilation increases with the increase of the number of poles of the
motor. Roughly, to estimate the temperature condition, the amount of heat removed by the auxiliary cooling is equal to that
removed by a self-cooled four pole motor. In extreme operating conditions it is advisable to use thermal protectors. The values
shown in the table refer to 230 V 50 Hz power supply. The fan can be powered both by 50 and 60 Hz .
Voltages other than 230 V can be furnished. On request, in cases where the series BASV and CFSV are not appropriate, it is
possible to use the series BM in the version BMSV, that has an axial fan (located on the rear part of the motor, in place of
the normal motor fan).

packaging
The MGM packaging procedure, for all motors with shaft height between 63 mm and 132 mm, is one motor per carton,
on which is printed all the identification information regarding the motor. In the table below are shown the dimensions
of the boxes used. For motors with shaft heights between 160 mm and 200 mm they are strapped down with wood
to pallets. Pallets have the EURO outside dimensions: 1200 mm by 800 mm.
On every package a self-adhesive label is applied, giving information on the shipping location, customer number and
address, and production lot number. For sea and air shipments additional protective materials are used, with added
cardboard and shrink film around the pallet.
Alternatively, on request, for high motor quantities shipments when they all have the same shaft height, it is possible to use
as a packaging means one large box (MULTIPACK package). Layers of cardboard are placed inside the box to guarantee the
integrity of the product. Here below there’s the drawing of the large box with the dimensions and in the table there is the
number of the motors inside each box in relation to shaft height. The stated quantities are approximate and they can change
in relation to the required structural form (B3-B5-B14).
