Measurement Assignment 4

This document contains an assignment with questions regarding second-order systems including spring-mass systems, step responses, damping ratios, natural frequencies, and governing differential equations. It asks the student to determine parameters like damping ratio, natural frequency, error due to excitation frequency, and selections of natural frequency and damping ratio to damp amplitude response between two frequencies. It also asks the student to determine damping ratio, natural frequencies, static sensitivity, and time constant from given differential equations describing second-order measuring systems.

Assignment –4

Q.1. Formulate the governing equation for a second –order system-spring mass system with
damping.

Q.2. (a) Discuss the time domain parameters for the response of step input to second-order
system.

(b) When a step input was given to a second- order system, the measurements revealed
that the system had an overshoot of 12% in rise time of 0.22 second. Determine:

(i) Effective damping ratio. [Ans. 0.56]

(ii) Undamped natural frequency of the system. [Ans. 2.74 Hz]

Q.3. A 2nd order instrument has a natural frequency of 4 Hz and a damping ratio of 0.66. If the
excitation frequency of the system is 6 Hz, determine the error due to the proximity of
excitation frequency with the natural frequency of the system. [Ans. 57.3%]

Q.4. A second-order system is to be designed for damping the amplitude response by 40

percent for input frequencies from 10 to 50 Hz. Select suitable natural frequencies and
damping ratios c/cc to accomplish this objective.

Q.5. A second –order system follows the differential equation given below:

+3 + 30 = 30

where I0 and Ii are the output and input quantities respectively. Determine the following:
(i) Damping ratio [Ans. 0.274]
(ii) Damped natural frequency [Ans. 5.267 rad./sec]
(iii) Static sensitivity [Ans. K=1]
(iv) Time constant [Ans. 0.1826s]

Q.6. Explain the effect of undamped natural frequency ωn and the damping ratio ζ on the
response of a second-order measuring system.
A second - order system has been described by the following different equation

+2 + 25 = 25

where θ0 and θi are the output and input quantities respectively. Determine the damping
ratio, undamped and damped natural frequencies, static sensitivities and time constant.

Ans. damping ratio = 0.2, undamped natural frequencies ωn= 5 rad/s , damped natural frequencies
ωd = 4.899 rad/s , static sensitivities K= 1.0 and time constant = 0.2.
