PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM 2
Year Level Unit Title Salvation Topic Aspect of Human Development
Four The Spirit Who Strengthens Confirmation The Creator of Emotions
Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person
This unit The Spirit Who Strengthens explores the different kinds of emotions we all have and how we know these emotions are true. Students wonder at
the God who created our emotions and as students gain an understanding of emotions, they identify that God loves us.
Additionally, the unit explores how Jesus expressed his emotions in loving ways. This leads into the promise Jesus to his followers to send the gift of the
Holy Spirit to help his followers love like him. Students discuss how the world could be different if all people expressed their emotions in loving ways and
drew on the strength of the Holy Spirit.
The second theme of the unit explores the stories of the Holy Spirit strengthening others. Particular people included, Mary, the Mother of Jesus, St John the
Baptist, St Peter and St Paul. Identifying how the Holy Spirit strengthens people. Students also explore how the Holy Spirit helps people to use their
emotions to help make others happy.
Lastly, the unit explores the ways Christians are called to use their emotions in ways that show love for others.
This unit explores the salvation topic of Confirmation throughout as students develop their understanding of the Holy Spirit and the call of Christians to show
love for others as Jesus taught us. The development of the Human Person is evident in this unit as students learn about their emotions, the creator of their
emotions and how they use their emotions to show love for all people.

This unit focuses on emotions, expressing emotions in loving ways and the Holy Spirit strengthening others. This unit is important for students
learning as having an understanding and opportunity to celebrate emotions and the Creator of emotions is beneficial for all students. Students
learn more about Jesus and how Jesus is a role model for how everyone should express their emotions in loving ways. This leads into the
power of his Spirit that strengthens through Confirmation and Christians reflect love through their emotions. This unit is meaningful to me as a
teacher as I have recognised students often have a difficulty expressing their emotions appropriately. This learning is integral for student’s
emotional development and builds students understanding of how Jesus expressed his emotions in loving ways. I will bring to this unit
numerous ICT tools and children’s literature books to help develop their understanding in meaningful and hands on ways. I will also bring my
own experience of emotions and my own experience of Confirmation.

Liturgy of the Word
First Reading: Acts 9:1-9 (The Conversion of Saul)
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles
In Jerusalem Saul was still trying to scare the followers of the Lord, even saying he would kill them. He went to the high priest and asked him to write letters to the
synagogues in the city of Damascus. Saul wanted the high priest to give him the authority to find people in Damascus who were followers of the Way. If he found any
believers there, men or women, he would arrest them and bring them back to Jerusalem. So Saul went to Damascus. When he came near the city, a very bright light
from heaven suddenly shined around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul! Why are you persecuting me?” Saul said, “Who are you,
Lord?” The voice answered, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting. Get up now and go into the city. Someone there will tell you what you must do.” The men
traveling with Saul just stood there, unable to speak. They heard the voice, but they saw no one. Saul got up from the ground and opened his eyes, but he could not
see. So the men with him held his hand and led him into Damascus. For three days, Saul could not see; he did not eat or drink.
The word of the Lord.
