6. DDT, the first chlorinated organic insecticide was originally prepared in 1873. It is very
effective against mosquitoes and is cheap but powerful insecticide, but now it is banned.
Answers the following questions :
(i) Why DDT has banned in many countries?
(ii) What values are displayed by the governments for the act?
7. What do you mean by inner orbital complexes and outer orbital complexes? Explain with
examples.

(i) Explain, why density of transition elements increases from left to right in a period?
(ii) Which transition metal of the 3d-series exhibits the largest number of oxidation states and why?
8. If N 2 gas is bubbled through water at 293 K, how many moles of N 2 gas would dissolve in 1L of
water. Assume that N 2 exerts a partial pressure of 0.987bar. Given that Henry’s law constant for
N 2 at 293 K is 76.48 bar.
9. Natural fibres are of two types:
(i) Cotton (ii) Dietary fibre
Meenal, a class XII student emphasised that besides adequate quantity of carbohydrates,
oil and vitamins, the food we take must be rich in fibre.

13. (i) CHF3 is less acidic than CHCl 3 . Explain.
(ii) What happens, when

14. An element exists in bcc lattice with a cell edge of 288 pm. Calculate its molar mass if its density
is 7.2 g/cm 3 .

290 pm and density is 7.80 g cm -3 (molecular mass = 56 g mol -1 ).
15. Write the equation for the synthesis of N,N-dimethyl aniline through the Hofmann
ammonolysis reaction.
16. (i) In which of the following does adsorption take place and why ?
(a) Silica gel placed in the atmosphere saturated with water.
(b) Anhydrous CaCl 2 placed in the atmosphere saturated with water.
(ii) Give an example of shape-selective catalysis?
19. A mixed oxide of iron and chromium is fused with sodium carbonate in free access of air to form
a yellow coloured compound (A). On acidification the compound (A) forms an orange coloured
compound (B), which is a strong oxidising agent. Identify compound (A) and (B). Write
chemical reactions involved.

21. (i) Why water soluble vitamins must be supplied regularly in the diet ? Give one example of it.
(ii) Differentiate between the following :
(a) Essential and non-essential amino acids.
(b) Fibrous and globular proteins.
23. Kalavati wanted to give her baby a medicine for fever. She added boiled and cooled water as
per the instruction to the contents of the bottle, upto the mark. She shook the bottle. Then gave
a spoonful of the medicine to the baby. As a student of chemistry answer the following
questions :
(i) Why did she shake up the contents? What is the process called?
(ii) What is the value associated with selling medicine in this form?
24. (i) Explain why on addition of 1 mole of NaCl to 1 litre of water, the boiling point of water
increases, while addition of 1 mole of methyl alcohol to one litre of water decreases its boiling
point.
(ii) Components of a binary mixture of two liquids A and B were being separated by distillation.
After sometime separation of component stopped and composition of vapour phase became
same as that of liquid phase. Both the components started coming in the distillate. Explain why
this happened?
(iii) What is the significance of Henry’s Law constant K H ?

25. An organic compound A(C 8H 6 ) on reacting with dilute sulphuric acid containing mercuric
sulphate gives a compound Bwhich can also be obtained from the reaction of benzene and acid
chloride in the presence of anhy. AlCl 3 . The compound B, when treated with iodine and (aq)
NaOH yields C and a yellow compound D.
Identify A, B, C and D with justification. Show how B is formed from A?

(i) Show how each of the following compounds can be converted to benzoic acid?
(a) Ethyl benzene (b) Acetophenone (c) Phenylethene (styrene)
(ii) Give simple chemical tests to distinguish between following pairs of compounds.
(a) Ethanal and propanal (b) Phenol and benzoic acid
27. (i) (a) The catalytic decomposition of N 2O by gold is a first order reaction. At 900 ° C and an initial
pressure of 200 mm, the reaction has 50% completed in 53 minutes and 73% completed in
100 minutes.
(b) How much of it will decompose in 100 minutes at the same temperature but at initial
pressure of 600 mm?
(ii) Calculate the rate constant of a reaction at 298 K, given that E a =103 kJ mol -1 ,
k = 7.87 ´10 -7 s -1 at 273 K, R = 8.314J K -1 mol -1
