Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Disaster may occur anywhere and at any time and disables the

capability of existing resources to deal with. Although it leads to some extensive

human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, appropriate

disaster mitigation and reduce reduction activities could reduce the effects of

them. (Radjak, A., & Redmond, A., 2014)

Smartphones are very in demand in today’s generation. In year 2019,

around 63.4 % of the people in the worldare using mobile device especially

smart phones from personal and business use. Games are one of the attractive

features of this device. It also lessens the boredom from work and daily

stressful life. The different version, styles and story of games makes the

common user curious to explore and enjoy from it.

The study is all about developing a disaster risk adventure game for

smartphones to be able to engage players how to prepare to reduce all risks of

natural hazards-induced disasters and to protect themselves and people around

them during the disasters. A disaster risk reduction adventure gaming app which

aims to pass every challenging levels and to gain scores from it, as the player

interacts with the game. Since player is been dealing with the adventure, the

interactive features, and graphics might help to be able to generate a good

gaming output. By installing this game in your android tablets or smartphones,

you will help to give awareness, fun and new knowledge to yourself about

disasters. Using GameMaker: Studio software, we can design a game that is

ideal for every player in our community.

According to Aghaei, N., Seyedin, H., & Sanaeinasab, H. (2018). A

disaster is a product of the interaction of hazard and the vulnerability conditions

of the society or elements exposed.Which focuses on mitigation and risk

reduction.

Based on the study conducted by the researchers, the current system of

Saint Bernard Southern Leyte uses a manual system in conducting orientation

about disaster risk reduction using the instructional material of the

speakers/lecturer which is the old method of lecturing like using books, Visual

aids, board and handouts. This matter happens when the speakers/lecturers

wants to conduct an activity/discussions to the students and residence. The

manual system of Saint Bernard Southern Leyte is inconvenient for the students

and residence. The operation of the system is by discussing the

student/residence through the use of books, visual aids and handouts.

The researchers proposed to build a capstone project for the awareness

in disaster risk reduction through game. The proposed game used GameMaker:

Studio software to develop a Disaster Risk Reduction Adventure game for all the

gamers.

Objectives of the study

This study aimed to design and develop a Disaster Risk Reduction

Adventure gaming app to provide an easy way of preparing to reduce

disasters.

The specific objectives were the following:

1. Identify the strength and weaknesses of the frequently played

electronic game.

2. To innovate the features of the existing frequently played electronic

game.

3. To evaluate the significant difference between the frequently-played

existing and proposed games in terms of:

3.1 Performance; and

3.2 Maintainability

Significance of the study

The result of this research will benefit the following:

Students. The students will be more interested as they would expose to new

learning process or system. It will also mould their learning and understanding in

the different concepts of every disaster as they are preparing for the incoming

happening in the future.

4

Households. The residences will aware and broaden their knowledge about

disasters.

Future Researchers. The research will guide them as a reference in the future

whenever they will conduct a research as well as improving the system.

Researchers. The study will broaden their knowledge about the system and its

benefits.

Definition of Terms

To avoid problems in understanding of terms used, the following are

defined operationally and conceptually.

Educational Game- An educational game is game designed to teach humans

about a specific subject and to teach them a skill.

Mobile- It is a modern technology or cell phone, usually one with computing

ability, or a portable wireless computing device used while held in the hand, or

other device that is made for portability, and is therefore both compact and

lightweight.

GameMaker:Studio- It is a cross-platform game engine developed by YoYo

Games. GameMaker accommodates the creation of cross-platform and multi-

genre video games using a custom drag-and-drop visual programming

language or a scripting language known as Game Maker Language, which can

be used to develop more advanced games that could not be created just by

using the drag and drop features.

Adventure Game- It is a type of video game in which the participant plays a

fantasy role in an episodic adventure story.

Disaster- It is a sudden event, such as an accident or a natural catastrophe

that causes great damage or loss of life.

Maintainability- A category in a questionnaire where shows the features of the

system that can be maintained or to be maintained.

Performance- It is a category in a questionnaire where shows the features of

the system.

Delimitation of the study

The researchers proposed a system focused only in developing a game

about disaster. The delimitation of this study is the user will play the game and

pass the different challenging levels. The game is designed in a way that

ensures the participants gain an improved understanding about disaster and also

helps them reflect on how they, as individuals, make decisions and

position themselves in relation to each other.
