Assessment Interview

What is Diagnostic assessment?


Is a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students’
strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction. It is
primarily used to diagnose student difficulties and to guide lesson and
curriculum planning.

2-When this assessment occurs?


This type of assessment usually occurs at the beginning of the term, or
the start of a new project or theme.

3- When you use diagnostic assessment?


I use diagnostic assessment throughout the year to gauge children’s
progress and prior knowledge when starting a new theme or topic.

4-What information you get from diagnostic assessment?


Diagnostic assessment can show individual strengths, weaknesses,
knowledge, and skills before instruction.

5-What is an example of a diagnostic assessment?


A pre-test is an example of diagnostic assessment (the test I gave you a
copy of)

6-What are diagnostic tests in education?


pre-assessments, predictive assessments, or diagnostic pretests.

7-What is a diagnostic reading assessment?


The diagnostic assessment of reading is used to assess student reading
ability in five areas: Phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary
development, reading fluency and reading comprehension.

8-Do the groups change for different learning subjects/topic? When


you use this assessment?
I only teach English, so I always use the same assessments; these
assessments would differ depending on the class group and out times on
ability levels.

9-What decision did you make based on the assessment?


The tests can show you the areas of learning you need to focus on. The
diagnostic tests I completed this term showed me I needed to cover all
the outcomes in depth as the children didn’t have much prior knowledge.

This term I have used oral and written diagnostic assessment.
Reflection (Task 1)

Reflect on the interview and the information gained about diagnostic assessment
from your MST. Consider how/why you would implement diagnostic assessment in
a UAE Early Childhood
Classroom in the future. Explain how this practice will affect student learning in
an early childhood classroom.

First of all, from my interview with my MST, I gained an important information’s


about diagnostic assessment. I learned that diagnostic assessment is an assessment
occurs before the teacher starts to teach a new lesson that allows teachers to
determine student’s strengths, weakness, and knowledge. It’s useful for the teacher
to evaluate student’s prior knowledge that will guide the lesson and for curriculum
planning.

I am as a teacher; several ways could be used to implement diagnostic assessment


in UAE Early Childhood. One of these ways is by doing exam before the child
enter the school which is better to determine the level of each student. The second
way the teacher could ask a questions before she starts the lesson. For example, if
the lesson about the story “The Hare and The Tortoise” she could ask what do you
think will be the character of each of them? Do you know other stories about The
Hare and The Tortoise? Or I could shows them pictures about Hare and Tortoise
then, asks “Do you see this animal when you went to the zoo?,” “Who can tell me
what the name of this animal is?” In this way, I will to gauge children’s progress
and prior knowledge.

In my opinion, these ways that I am going to use with early childhood students will
effect on their language because throughout asking the students questions before
the lesson will arise their interest then, they will be exciting to learn and focus with
the teacher. Also, they will develop their language rapidly, and they will learn the
words fast which is useful for them to improve their language and learn new
vocabularies
