Free Convection Problem

The document describes two heat transfer scenarios. The first involves estimating the heat input needed to maintain a thin horizontal plate at 130°C submerged in water at 700°C. The second involves calculating the heat loss by natural convection from a vertical pipe 2m high and 80mm in diameter maintained at 120°C surrounded by air at 30°C.

A thin 80 cm long and 8 cm wide horizontal plate is maintained at a temperature of 130°C in

large tank full of water at 700°C. Estimate the rate of heat input into the plate necessary to
maintain the temperature of 130°C.
A vertical pipe 80 mm diameter and 2 m height is maintained at a constant temperature of 120°C.
the pipe is surrounded by still atmospheric air at 30°C. Find heat loss by natural convection.
