TRANSCRIPTION ASSIGNMENT – WINTER SEMESTER

TASKS:
1) Transcribe the five lines below phonemically into Standard British English pronunciation. Include stress marks if
stress is not on the first syllable.
Use the free space below each line.

2) Complete the following allophones:


a) aspiration + devoicing (only in contexts where they are necessary)
b) pre-fortis shortening
c) dark ‘l’
d) stop releases (whenever they are possible)
e) coarticulatory allophones – nasalized vowels, dental, fronted + labialized consonants
Use the same line as for the phonemic transcription – just add the allophones.

One of the American stars of the punk rock era has been found dead of a 1

suspected drug-overdose at his Hollywood home. He was fifty. The singer was 2

a founder member of the pioneering punk band The Ramones. The group never 3

made it into the US Top Forty, but had several hits in the UK including their 4

second album We Leave Home and the song She Was a Punk Rocker. 5
